View Full Version : Denman D5 brush
dancingbarefoot June 18th, 2006, 03:02 PM I've been using my Denman D5 for about four years now, and I'd never go back to another type of brush. It's wonderful! Slides through tangles like a hot knife through butter, without ripping through it. Hair never gets caught on it.
It's very easy to clean, too, because you can pull out the rubber insert holding the bristles and wash both parts separately.
The best thing about this brush, other than its fantastic detangling power, is that it's inexpensive. No need to buy a $100 brush when a Denman gets the job done. :rockerdud
LisaJaney June 18th, 2006, 03:07 PM Have to throw in my two-cents. I only recently got a D5, but have used a D3 and D4 (several of each; I own 6 or 8 Denmans) for four years as well. There is NOTHING that I use that I enjoy as much. I even HAVE a hundred-dollar brush (the MP Large Extra BBB, sells for $160 online) and use it two or three times a MONTH, whereas I use my Denmans at least twice daily.
Denman CANNOT be beat. Best brush in the WORLD. Seriously. DBF and I wouldn't lie to you!
(subliminal suggestion to follow, resistance is futile -- you WILL be assimilated: buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman buy a denman)
OK, I had to edit my review. Yesterday this page wasn't loading worth beans for me. DBF's post wasn't loading right and her "ratings" section was all superimposed upon itself. ToDAY it's loading fine and I can SEE everything and even see that *I* can do a ratings myself! I gave it five-stars all the way, even though the "texture" question has nothing to do with a hairbrush. I LOVE my Denmans! TBear got me hooked on them (gave me one as a "good to meet you at last" gift the first time we met, in 2002) and I got Nastasska hooked, and many others have followed us into Denman-addictio-land. Bwahahahahahaha!
nastasska June 18th, 2006, 08:46 PM LisaJaney converted me to Denmans:inlove:
I can't find a way to edit the rating but I give it a five on all counts:grin:
Teacherbear June 18th, 2006, 09:37 PM I used a Denman (D5, I think) in high school in the late 1970s/early 1980s and loved it. I re-found it (I still had it) after finding the hair boards about 5 years ago. I now own a *few* <clearing throat> and LOOOOOVE them. I have one other brush I use, but I keep coming back to my Denmans!
BTW, I own my original cream colored one, a red one, a blue one, a pastel-striped one, the black rhinestone brush, and my woody. I  :inlove: my woody!
I rated all of the numbers as 5, except packaging. It is average packing. The brushes I bought from Sally's are in a box with a little clear window. I can't recall the brushes from Ball Beauty being in a box. The black rhinestone brush (from Ball Beauty), however, came in a cute little plastic pouch. I'm giving "packing quality" a 4.
kimberlily June 19th, 2006, 09:13 AM I adore my Denmans! I have two. A D5, and a little purse sized one that I mostly use on DD's hair. I find that combing causes tangles instead of being the best way to dentagle, but when I got my Denman, wow! I have a LOT of hair, so I think that's why combing doesn't work for me... I have to do it in a lot of layers or I will break the comb (I have broken several combs!)
I like my Denmans so much that I bought two from Sally's for longhaired friends. One of them was detangling with a BBB!!!!!!!!!!! The other was using a vent brush which had all kinds of sharp bits where the pins went in. It hurt my head to watch them brush their hair
Kuchen July 23rd, 2006, 10:18 AM OK, so my new craving is for a brush, and this sounds good (or else I picked up on the ol' subliminal messages going on up there) but there's a mystery.
I can't find the D5 on Denman's website, nor elsewhere on line.
I could have heatstroke, but has it been [whisper it] discontinued??
[oh and I can't seem to work out how to fill in the graph things --->
Will do as soon as I am wiser...]
Artista July 23rd, 2006, 03:46 PM I don't what number the Denman paddle brush is, but it is the best most gentle and effective brush I have ever found. I could kick myself for spending a ton of money on others when I had this gem in my hands for 4 years!
ETA: All the ratings should read 5s for me. Not sure how to edit it! Definitely NOT 1s!
dancingbarefoot July 23rd, 2006, 06:16 PM I can't find the D5 on Denman's website, nor elsewhere on line.
I got mine at a beauty supply shop, but LisaJaney's done orders from Ball Beauty (http://www.ballbeauty.com/denman.htm) before, and they seem to carry tons of Denmans. The D5 is on this page (http://www.ballbeauty.com/dentrad.htm).
summerstorm1979 July 25th, 2006, 02:01 AM Hey! I have been influenced by many great things I have read so far here, and the advice on Denman brushes is no different! I just bought a D5 and also a large paddle brush (D83) and I love both of them! I never knew about Denman before reading these reviews... and I am a brush fanatic. I have TONS of brushes and combs but both brushes that I recently bought are fantastic! They really are very gentle on my hair and don't snag at all. It's a wonderful thing to not hear (and feel!) your hair stretching and then that SNAP when it breaks.
I bought my brushes at SALLY Beauty Supply, which I believe is a national chain. I just got them this weekend (7/23) and the D5 was on clearance! It had originally been $12.99 but was marked down to $7.99. When I got up to the cash register, the lady informed me that all reduced items were buy one get one free! :rockerdud Oh my goodness, that made my day!! (Meanwhile, my boyfriend thinks I'm a complete weirdo for getting so excited over a hairbrush! LOL) So of course, since it was such a good deal I went back and got another one for my purse! Just thought I would let everyone know, in case there's a Sally Beauty Supply near you! I think the sale doesn't end until 7/30 maybe?
Here is a link to the Sally store locator in case you are looking!

Thanks again everyone for the recommendation! I :inlove: my Denmans!
I also LOVE the little "rock on" dude, so here he is again for good measure... :rockerdud

LisaJaney July 25th, 2006, 07:40 AM Thank you Stormy, I"m going to Sally's toDAY! My middle-son wants a D5. That is, when his hair grows back out (he shaved his head two weeks ago when he got a wild hair and just went for it) He'll LOVE it! I may stock up for impromptu birthday/Christmas gifts! Woot!
softestacia August 2nd, 2006, 10:33 AM Uh oh, I have the 7 row version (the D5 is 9 row.) Is there a big difference? I bought the only one our Sally's had.
dancingbarefoot August 2nd, 2006, 11:23 AM I shouldn't think there'd be a big difference. I just got the D5 because it was big and I have a lot of hair.
DMARTINEZ August 2nd, 2006, 11:46 AM I just went out and bought the only one our Sallys had also, a D3, which is 7 rows also. Should be fine. I might get the D5 once my hair gets alot longer. But this
one seems the same, just less rows. I hope! Its nice anyway! :)

talullah August 4th, 2006, 05:37 PM Based on reviews and enthusiasm of LHCers, I ran out to buy myself a Denman. I got the D4 because my Sally's didn't have the D5. This brush rocks!!! It detangles and smoothes my hair without breaking a strand. Perfect for my thick hair. I can't believe I'm excited about a line of hairbrushes, but I'm already planning my future Denman collection. Thanks for the recommendations!
(ratings keep going back to 1s...should be 5s)
froglet August 27th, 2006, 02:14 PM Love the denman brushes!
LJ, Teacherbear, and a few other denman fiends :flowers:, talked me into a denman last year. I ended up with a leopard print D3 and loved it. Really, the best brush I've ever used. As a matter of fact, DD14 who has very fine, waist length hair also loved it. She loved it sooo much she nabbed mine.
So I'm in the market for a new denman, I'm off to look at the D5's, D4's and D3's.
* hmmm, my ratings should be 5's not 1's. Guess I need to learn how to use the ratings system.:silly:
.Amanaka. October 4th, 2006, 08:55 PM After reading the replies here, I stopped at the nearest Sally's last week, and checked them out. I am now the proud owner of a Denman D3, which was all they had.
This is one of the best brushes that I have ever used. It detangles my hair almost easier than my comb, and it is so easy to clean. The bristles feel so good against my scalp too.
Since I'm trying to stretch my washing times, I've noticed that it also seems to do a pretty decent job of spreading sebum, but then again, that could just be my imagination.
All in all, an amazing product!
Arianwen October 5th, 2006, 07:01 AM Alright, you guys have convinced me. Unfortunately, Sally's doesn't exist where I am. What's the safest and most reliable site to buy a Denman for Canadians? Which one should I get?

AH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH, this had me cracking up. OK...I think I have a D3. It has seven rows of bristles. I really lurve it. :inlove:
ETA: What the...? I didn't mean to give this "1" reviews..............
Keenkitty October 5th, 2006, 08:31 AM hmmmm....you say the denman detangles better than a comb....even a detangling comb?
I may have to buy one of these denman. I am having a hell of a time brushing my hair with my boar bristle brush! the brush strands are so bendy they can't actually BRUSH through my hair!?
And I could use a pick up since my dr told me I was too chubby... :(

'Ailina October 16th, 2006, 10:32 AM So the difference between a D3, D4, & D5 is the number of rows?
Will these brushes penetrate thick hair, or is it more of a top-layer-only kind of brush?
I'm interested in a Denman, because the reviews here are so overwhelmingly positive!
I've wasted SOOOOOO much money on brushes that don't work for me! They either just skim the surface, snag my hair, impale my scalp, or catch the strands in little cracks and grooves in the plastic (cheap brushes). I really want something that's neither ineffective nor harsh!
I get the impression someone with long hair should get a D5? Is that the largest?
Melian January 21st, 2007, 06:20 AM You enablers! I thought I would look if these Denman brushes were available in the netherlands..... I just bought a D4... I hate/love you all here at LHC! :)
kwaniesiam January 21st, 2007, 07:36 AM I just got a D3 from sally's and I 'heart' it! Of course, my mum thought I was insane for spending $10 on a hairbrush, she thinks the cheap ones will do just fine...oy...well at any rate I'll just have to say "I told you so!" when she tries to nab mine from me. :D Yay Denmans!
Keenkitty March 28th, 2007, 11:44 AM I am holding in my hands my much coveted Denman padddle brush.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
It was 13.00 and WORTH EVERY PENNY!
It gets the grease down my hair, seperates hairs and doesn't yank out hair.
Perfect for tidying up after having a pony tail or Hat on all day.
I carry it everywhere.
vanwa March 29th, 2007, 02:16 AM I've got a so called "Denman Carbon Antistatic DC11" wide-tooth comb.
It's great! It just slides through without ripping the hair at all.
I think I'm going to buy a denman brush too.

I think the denman would go all the way to the scalp even with thick hair.
I now have a D5 and it is weighted. It gives the brush a nice heft to it. I could be misremembering but I think that is the difference between the D4 & D5, the weighted handle.
