View Full Version : Bruises...
SagittarianTiger August 7th, 2003, 06:05 AM Ok..where to start.... :? Well.. something weird is going on.. :D
I have this bruise on my knee, that is purple, green, and blue.. yep..not purty...but it DOESN'T HURT! and I can't figure out when I did it, or how... and for a bruise like THAT you'd think i'd know right? :no
Then, i have some other bruises from work.. i know they are from work, because i remember my leg (lower than the knee) hitting the cart at work, as i tried to lift a huge arse watermelon
Nope..not done yet... then there is on the left side of me, on my hip..a REALLY sore spot..what a bruise should feel like..but ...no bruise.. and it's been sensitive for 2 weeks now... no idea what i did there either!
So..now that you know all that, and are thinking i'm a total klutz.. i'm not..usually... lol... i just don't know where the bruises are coming from like the purple one..or why the spot on my hip doesn't LOOK bruised, but FEELS like it...
So...my questions are..
am i weird? :?
why would it be doing that? is that normal for the yucky lookin ones not to hurt, or for you not to remember what you did THERE?
and...anything i can do to prevent bruising (other than make sure not to hit things and wear nerf body armour? :D :D)
thanks in advance!!!!
rosepetal August 7th, 2003, 06:19 AM Hi ST!!! 8)
Maybe taking a multi-vitamin would help your body heal more easily. Also, have you considered some sort of program such as yoga or tai-chi to help increase awareness of your body and help avoid the bruises in the first place. Also... maybe re-arrange any furniture that is jutting out in your path... I had to do that recently, and my legs look better now... :D
SagittarianTiger August 7th, 2003, 07:14 AM Hi Rosepetal! :) :)
Well...when i remember i take a kids multi vitamin.. (gave up temporarily on my adult kind, cuz it tasted nasty..and didn't have the money to get the capsule form of them..maybe i should order those now...) but i don't think the kids vitamin is doing me much good.. so yeah..i think i'll try a better vitamin for that...
oh gosh..i have two tai-chi videos..i've been wanting to learn it...now i have a good excuse! THANKS! Think that will really help even a little??
Well... i can't rearrage furniture at the grocery store... :D the management just wouldn't understand that I and the carts with huge watermelons/cases of beer/24 packs of water bottles...don't get along :D but around the house... i guess i could unclutter some areas i'm prone to hit! :D
Thanks! i'm gonna try all those

I like the Centrum multi-vitamins that you can get at Walgreens or Walmart. They are fairly reasonably priced too.
Yes... I know that yoga and tai chi have helped me tremendously with balance and body awareness... and stress reduction, which is nice. Plus, they are just fun to practice!!! 8)
Dispatcherbert August 7th, 2003, 02:20 PM Once you get a bruise, Sagi, put Vitamin E cream on it. When hub broke his hand at work, he had some bruising. The doctor told him to use the cream because of its "healing properties" (whatever that means!).
I bought a two-pack of some inexpensive cream from Walmart: Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Care Cream. I got two 4-oz. tubs for something like $3.50. If you wind up not liking it, just use it after shaving or whatever. It seemed to help Scott's hand. I also started using it before bed for my undereye circles and they seem to have diminished a bit.
HTH!

HTH!
Ohh... cool! I have some Vitamin E gel..by the same people as you cream.. would this work too??
Dispatcherbert August 7th, 2003, 09:41 PM Probably--it'd just be stickier :) . Let me know if it works for you.
bunniee August 8th, 2003, 06:04 AM I get the 'where did this come from' bruises too, and they usually don't hurt either. Arnica is good for bruises. It's available in a gel form for topical use, which can usually be found at healthfood stores. I used this a few years ago after I tripped over the last 2 steps carrying laundry downstairs, and hit my shin hard on the pavement. The arnica gel helped ease the pain and seemed to make the bruises heal faster.
I got a mesh laundry bag at Walmart after that incident. Trying to carry a big laundry basket down a flight of stairs is dangerous when you're a klutz & can't see where you're going.

I swear by Arnica! I always keep a tube of it here at home. Today I just bought another tube so I can keep one at school!
I also keep a tube a Calendula close by for cuts!
They 2 work like a charm!
Some injuries require both Arnica and Calendula.
SagittarianTiger August 11th, 2003, 05:22 AM Thanks Bunniee & TBear!! I need to stop over at the health food store anyway, to get some more Dr.Bronner's soap... so i'll pick up some arnica and calenda while i'm there! I just got another bruise on my shoulder that's a lovely shade of light green :D so i'll definetely be trying that too!
DweamGoiL August 11th, 2003, 10:16 AM one of those nasty black & blue bruises, you can either rub a moistened washcloth with some warm (not hot) water and gently massage the area. Do this several times a day to disperse the bruising. I also like to take the shower massage, put it on the lowest setting and just hold it over the bruise...it's the same effect as the washcloth.
This is only for bruises which are not accompanied by swelling or after the swelling has subsided.
Teechia August 11th, 2003, 12:07 PM You might try upping your vit c intake. Sometimes easy bruising is a sign of not enough vit c. (just my 2 cents)
Hugs,
Teechia
SagittarianTiger August 11th, 2003, 06:42 PM Dweam... hmmmm..really? that works? I'm gonna start that right now ! I have one on my arm, i just noticed yesterday , that's getting icky..no swelling tho..just tender.
soo.. i'm gonna try your idea on that and see if it helps! Cool! With all these suggestions, i will DEFINETELY be bruise free soon..
Teechia... THATS what I was wondering too.. i knew there was some vitamin that had to do with that... thanks! that must be why when i was little my dad had me drink a lot of OJ whenever he'd notice i'd bruise from barely a bump into a chair!
:) :)
_banshee August 21st, 2003, 03:33 AM I have a, well "talent" for running against chairs, tables you name it and I get bruises very easily  .
I have found out that it helps to massage the spot (I just rub it with my hands) right after I have run into a piece of furniture :silly: and the bruise doesn't even appear 8) .
[edited: typos!]
RedJen August 21st, 2003, 03:43 AM I bruise easily, too. I don't mind if it's from something fun, like inline skating, but I get annoyed at all the bruises I get from running into walls, doors, and furniture. The other day I got a bruise on my foot when my dog stepped on me. That was weird. I think I do better when I remember to take my iron, but I can see I need to get better about taking my vitamin C as well.
scarlett August 26th, 2003, 06:03 AM Well, I've been avoiding this thread cause I don't want to worry you, but . . .
since nobody else had said it:
If you have noticed you are bruising easier and more frequently, you might want to visit your doctor and get some bloodwork done, just for peace of mind. Just to rule out anything more serious.

Really? You're not panicing me (YET!!! ;) ) ...but what serious matters have symptoms of bruising? Gosh, I'm all curious now (which comes right before worry i know.. :D) I ask cuz I didn't know it could be anything serious.. so I just thought it was something weird but minor..
scarlett August 27th, 2003, 10:27 AM OK, please don't panic. If you have been bruising more easily it could be you are anemic. Which isn't a big deal. But a doctor should look at you to do a blood test to let you know.
Here's the unlikely, yet scary scenario:
"Fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, weight loss, fever, easy bruisability(emphasis mine), and bleeding are prominent initial complains of patients with ANLL (acute nonlymphocytic leukemia).
---American Cancer Society Textbook of Clinical Oncology
Take a few deep breaths and ask youself if you really have been bruising easier or if your job/lifestyle has changed how much it beats you.
I'm not a doctor or a nurse so you can throw this out if you'd like. But see a doctor if you have any doubts.
Sorry to scare you. You're probably fine.

hmmm... *thinking* I'll have to look into that.. although yes, my work has up'd the amount i bruise, but those are the OBVIOUS bruises, like when you hit your elbow, and you go OW, and have to prevent yourself from cursing.. those I KNOW will be bruises.. it's that amount I"m getting that I can't PLACE that is what's weird....
You're not scaring me. Actually, that's why I posted. I wanted to know what could be going on, if it was minor, if there was something I need to have looked at!

Thanks for the hug. I really hated to worry you and sincerely hope it's nothing at all. Let me know what turns up. I am a little worried.

SagittarianTiger August 28th, 2003, 06:31 AM It's ok Scarlett... I don't have the symptoms for the scary scenario.
My grandma is anemic, so that is possible I could be too.. I was looking up things about it last night (I like to be well informed before I jump the gun :D)... I still need to get some more info, but it is possible I could be anemic... will keep you informed.. because some of the symptoms i've read do fit that...but i'm still reading up on it (I dont just like going "hey doc! I'm bruising" and waiting for him to use HIS brain to figure it out :D)
on a good note, my vitamins (which were backordered) shipped yesterday, so I should be getting them. They have alot of good stuff in them that might help this heal too!
I know my grandma has the iron deficiency one... and remember my dad making me take iron supplements when I was younger, so maybe I am, and just never paid attention to it, then when I got lazy about supplements it decided to remind me? Something to think about!
