View Full Version : Honey used on skin

I’ve been using honey on my hair ( mixed with co. egg etc.) and on my skin.
In the past 2weeks I used honey mask every second day and my skin is more moisturized and supple, no pimples from it either ;) .

I’ve been wondering though if honey doesn’t give u problems :? (clogged pores , acne) and I am a little bit afraid of bacteria , funguses . I know that honey is sterile but I also know that bacteria and all kind of other stuff love sweets.
Anyone else uses honey on face ?

well, i can't really answer your question for sure.

on one hand, i have never heard of anyone having problems from honey.

on the other hand, honey is NOT sterile as you said. It does contain bacteria, that is why you can't feed it to babies because they will get sick.

i guess if you don't start to have acne or other problems, i wouldn't worry about it. but that's just MHO.

Violeta, I've used honey on my skin many times, it doesn't cause acne and it actually is used for an antimicrobial as well as for moisture.

I've also used it to heal blemishes, it makes a nice germ free barrier and helps the skin heal.

Honey's been recommended to treat acne on my acne message boards in a few posts (it's antibacterial), so I wouldn't worry about it clogging pores. A few of the people put it on spots and cover them with bandaids overnight.

To chime in on honey's healing properties . . . it can be applied to cuts (so I guess pimples fall into "open wound" catagory). It helps fight infection and helps cuts heal.

(I think I just repeated myself! :undecided:

Yes... as TB said, honey can be used on wounds, so it shouldn't be a problem for your face.

I have however stopped using sugar as a scrub for my face due to concerns about bacteria and breakouts. It seemed to give me problems, but not for sure. Now, I use baking soda mixed with a cleanser. :)

I do not use scrubs because I always get very irritated skin, U use some AHA’s , BHA’s though. ;)

I was thinking that if there is a chance for honey to have botulism(sp?) spores / bacteria then it could have something else to … :?

Honey does a great job on parts of my skin that it is irritates and I also use it on wounds, cuts (minor), if something bits me.

how did i miss this?

i use honey everyday :D this is what i do - take 1/4 tsp aloe, mix sandalwood powder little, the my rosewater-glycerin hand lotion 2-3 drops, one vit e capsule and 2-3 drops honey, mix well - wash your face and pat dry with a soft towel, apply your own freshly made mixture. it takes 4-5 mins to dry. and then i sleep with that on my face.

usually its just aloe, vite e and honey (sticky mixture :( ), but from last week i added the remn. stuff and i cant complain ;)

no, honey has very good shelf life. specially of its pure honey. you can put gooseberrys (amla) in honey and they stay good for almost 2-3 yrs. and its tasty! yummmmm :D

try it for a week or two continuously and the first thing your friends will notice about you is that - your face glows :D

I LOVE honey masks! They're great, I do them every second day as well :) And it defenitley made my skin a lot more glowy looking:) Which is always a good thing.
How long do you keep the honey on your face for? I keep it on for about 15 minutes :)

Browsing through that honey recipes site now. Cool site...thanks for the link.

oooo, sounds like a cool mixture :) I wanna try it! I have the aloe, Vitamin E and honey but not the other stuff you mentioned. Do you think it makes a big difference not using the other things?

Also, with the Vite E, what do you do just poke a whole in the capsule and get the liquid stuff out?? lol. Doesn't seem like there's a lot inside of it.

Thanks :)

lol :D i do this when i'm about to goto bed. so imagine a sleepy girl...
who just bites  the vit e capsule in the remote end so she doesnt have to eat the oil. too lazy to go looking for something to prick the capsule.

vit e, aloe, honey mixture works perfect! only thing to worry is the stickiness. sandalwood powder, aloe and rosewater in my hand lotion helped me to reduce the stickiness. its optional. you may want to leave the aloe + vit e + honey for 30 mins and wash it with cold water if you dont like the stickiness.

Smiles, what kind of sandalwood powder are you using? I got some red sandalwood powder a few months ago . . . I'm sure I had something in mind to do with it at the time . . . now I have no idea. (I tried putting some on my scalp  to soak up some oil from a hair experiment gone wrong. lol. It didn't help - then I just had oily red sandalwood powder stuck to my scalp.) :?

Anyway, just wondering if I could use my red sandalwood powder in a honey mask? TIA

yeah, yeah yeah.... ::nodding head up and down, grinning ear to ear. :: thats my another all-time favourite. you can use it like a mask. the combo for that is: honey, lemon juice, red sandalwood powder (optional:a little turmeric if you can find the 'real' cosmetic turmeric that doesnt color your face.). this is a magical mask. three days and you'll see a wonderful visible difference. apply the mask, leave it for 20-30 mins, wash with cold water. very simple and easy!

the sandalwood powder i use in my above mentioned nighttime facial leave-in ;) is not red sandalwood powder. its santalum alba (white sandalwood). i've never seen it white though. tan is the closest i've seen. red sandalwood is santalum rubrum which is dark maroon in color.

red sandalwood is not same as sandalwood. both are absolutely wonderful. and both are too good for all types of skin. you cannot say one is better than the other. sandalwood is soothing and cures skin problems. red sandalwood is more powerful than the sandalwood (thats mild) on skin. its got excellent curative properties and i've seen the skin improving fabulously within a few uses. no idea about their use in haircare though.

i bought a red sandalwood 'wood' from india but doh! i forgot the rough stone (like a pestle and mortar) to rub the wood against it with a little water. couldnt find one here. anyways, i'm going back sooon :D and will make body masks out of red sandalwood powder :D

sorry for too many superlatives :DD - but both sandalwood and red sandalwood deserves them :D

Ooooh, thank you Smiles! The mask with red sandalwood does sound lovely, and I plan to try it soon. One last question, if I may: can you give approx. quantities for the honey, lemon juice & red sandalwood; or if not, what consistency should I end up with? Can't wait to try it.

Thanks,
Dianna

i dont measure usually... but it should be approximately 1/2 tsp red sandalwood powder, 1/2 tbsp honey, one tbsp lemon juice.

if its too strong for you, you can decrease lemon juice.

when you mix it, it should be in the consistency of... :ponder: pancake batter? or mayonnaise? ah, i got it - consistency of chips dip :DD

Thanks Smiles! :D That's exactly what I was hoping for. I figured you probably don't measure when concocting - I know I don't. But it's clear enough to work with. I'm going to try this as soon as I have some lemons (next time I'm at the store). :DD
