View Full Version : Does anyone else love Star Trek 'dos?
Madeleine February 26th, 2003, 02:31 PM Have you noticed that in so many Star Trek episode there is great hair? I especially like the creative updos. (I watch this stuff a lot - my b/f has them all on video and I've seen pretty much every episode and movie at least once).
Starting with TOS, there is of course Janice Rand with her fabulous "chess board" pattern updo (I don't want to know how much fake hair, teasing and spray they needed for this one):

In TNG there are Deanna Troi's great curls (hair style gets more and more "natural" with time, which is a pity on one hand cause I like her fancy hair toys, but probably good for the health of the actors hair ;-)):

Deannas Mother, Lwaxana Troi, also often wears her curls in interesting updos that match her extravagant clothing. Sometimes she wears wigs too, especially later in Deep Space Nine (sorry, couldn't find any good pics of her hair as she's only a guest star).
Worf's hair (and that of other Klingons) is also pretty spectacular when worn down, especially later when it's longer.
And the TNG female "no name" ensigns that appear every now and then for an episode have almost exclusively longish hair that they wear in neat, tidy braided updos (probably all done by the same set hairdresser).
In Deep Space Nine non of the regulars had any great styles to show off, I was always a bit disappointed that Jedzia didn't do more fancy stuff with her hair. Her thinking is probably too practical for that, a ponytail has to do.
But there were a few guest stars with cute 'dos - just came across this one for instance:

Voyager is a different story again. I love Kathryn Janeway's soft buns, they remind me of the Victorian "Psyche Knot" Style - and I thought it was such a shame when she cut her hair to a bob.

And Seven of Nine! One of my favourite characters - she isn't only extremely sexy and has this cool machine implant and corset thing going on, she also wears my favourite - the french twist! And never (well, amost) a strand out of place :-)

I remeber that there were serval episodes with historic themes (for instance the "Fair Haven" and other holodeck simulations on Voyager) where there were some quite nice hair styles.
Just one more thing why I love Star Trek :-)
Wanita February 26th, 2003, 03:10 PM Always wanted Deanna Troi hair - couldn't figure out how to get the height in front (without teasing or a hair rat, anyway)
dancingbarefoot February 26th, 2003, 03:22 PM There are indeed some interesting hairstyles throughout the Star Trek shows & movies. Some good hair, some not so good hair... I remember one episode where a woman has hair in tiers, vaguely resembling a wedding cake (the episode where David Ogden Stiers guest stars as a man who's supposed to euthanize himself upon turning 60). Weird!
But all in all, some nice hair! Maybe I could do neat updos like those if I had a hair stylist on my staff. :)
gabiwags February 26th, 2003, 03:28 PM The early ones had some of the weirdest styles.
Always enjoyed the wild Klingons :D
The Romulans are really in a rut  ...g
Elspeth30 February 26th, 2003, 03:43 PM some of the others... I did not recall all the interesting hair styles. I am thinking now about how many other shows, especially of the '70's might have hair inspirations.

What an incredible mane she had, andfor a woman her age!
I agree, Seven of Nine's twist was inhumanly consistenly perfect.
Tresses February 27th, 2003, 05:12 AM Agreed! The Star Trek universe had wonderful hair. FYI, Deanna's long curly hair was not Marina Sirtis' hair. It was a wig, as I suspect were many of those other incredible updos. (Too geeky for my own good! ;-) )

She was in a movie "Tristan and Isolde" years ago - hair almost down to her toes and I'm pretty sure it was her's. She's always had great hair - I hated the cut too...g

Ah ok - I suspected they were using hair pieces and such, I didn't know it wasn't her own hair at all (was it in the later movies then, when she had straighter hair and bangs?)
But I guessed that there was a lot of "faking" going on, that's why I mentioned charakters rather than actors. They must have some very talented make up artists and stylists there anyway to create all those fancy species. "Regular humanoid" hair styles is probably one of their easiest exercises.
merryrose31 February 28th, 2003, 02:21 PM Beverly Crusher's hair. Though it was never dramatic or elaborate, I thought she was a good example of a not-so-young actress with longish hair. In some seasons, it was longer than others. I liked the color of her hair, too.
Diana's hair was very pretty.
Of course, it's easy to have neat hair on TV when you have access to fake pieces and falls and lots of hairdressers watching your every move. It sort of goes back to my theory that the reason women in prior centuries had so much beautiful hair was that they had maids.
Ever notice how long-term STar Trek characters always seemed more elaborate or stylized when they were first introduced, and they moved to a more natural look over time? Even Wharf evolved.
Ok, still not admitting that I'm a dork, even though I can carry on a converation about about Star Trek hairdos. 8)
Grenwich February 28th, 2003, 04:37 PM Errr. only on the Klingon chicks - wow!

Madeleine, I'm fairly certain that that was Marina's own hair in the movies.

merryrose, I am not a dork! I am a geek. :P

After the first season, Dr. Crusher's hair was a wig, too. :-) However, IIRC, Gates McFadden's real hair was actually quite a bit longer than the wig. They thought it was too long to look professional on a doctor and so they made her wear a shorter wig.
I think her real hair was a nicer color than the fake hair -- it's a much deeper red in the first (real hair) season.
I think the best hair is on Deep Space Nine -- with the exception of Major Kira, most Bajorian women appear to wear long hair in updos. There weren't many Cardassian women on the show, but they had a of hair as well. Once I put together a Cardassian costume -- even with a 4' black wig and a huge rat to wrap it around I couldn't get something as elaborate and impressive as the Cardassian women's hair on the series. Imagine how much fake hair it took to put those wigs together....

Goodness, you made a Cardassian costume? That must be one of the hardest ones to do, especially with all the facial features. How did you do the make-up?
I guess if I ever wanted to impersonate a non-human Star Trek species I'd probably choose a Trill. Cute spot pattern and easy to do.

At least, in later episodes it was the cute spot pattern. There was a Trill in some episode of TNG, that had one of the symbiote... I think Crusher fell in love, because the host body was male, but the symbiote was transferred to a female body and Crusher had Issues with that. ;) The Trill then had some bizarre facial features -- I think a heavy nose and big eye brown ridges.

Right! I forgot about this one, he looked almost Bajoran as far as I remeber. I think they never mentioned that later or explained why he looked different ...

Maybe it's like the Klingons? XD Worf gets asked why Klingons 'now' look so different from Klingons around the time of the original series, and he refuses to discuss it.
I feel like such a geek. o.o

The same way they did it on the series... hot foam latex. I got my Mom to help me make a cast of my face and sculpted the bits I needed to add to my face out of plasticine. From those I made molds, and used them to cast the appliances the foam latex. (An annoying process -- you mix the chemicals, whip them like cream, then spoon the foam into the molds and bake them for hours -- it stinks to high heaven and there's a lot that can go wrong.) Then you glue the appliances to your face (and in the case of Cardassians, your neck as well) and put on the makeup.
Of course, the ones on the series look a lot better.... but it's the same basic process they use to do TV/movie makeup.
It was a big project. :-)

LOL yes, in that totally cool remake of the TOS "Trouble with Tribbles" episode :-) At least this issue does get addressed.

Hm. Maybe you are? LOL, I sure know that I am (and proud of it) :D

None that are digital, but if I come across the photos I'll try to scan and post them sometime. :)

long_haired_rennie April 8th, 2003, 08:26 AM I always loved that woven "checkerboard" hairstyle from the original! Also, I thought Katherine Janeway's chignons were so elegant - there was an episode where they all had this holodeck program located in Ireland sometime in the late 1800's, I think....she looked so pretty in period costume!
On a related note, we're not geeks....we're sci-fi enthusiasts.... *laugh*
Madeleine April 8th, 2003, 08:39 AM Oh cool, you bumped up the old Star Trek thread that I started, thanks :)

Yes! I think you mean the "Fair Haven" episodes (there were two or three of those I think), I loved them too.
On a related note, we're not geeks....we're sci-fi enthusiasts.... *laugh*
Erm, well, yes  :D
Thank heavens for the internet or I'd have to wait for German television to show "Enterprise" until I could watch it - we're just within the first few episodes within the first season over here (of course I watch them again now, LOL)
