View Full Version : Scritching
starblonde13 March 30th, 2006, 08:04 PM Ok, I have been reading some more and have a new question. What is scritching, how is it done and why? Also, are there any boar bristle brushes that will penetrate thick, course hair? Or, are they only meant for thinner hair?

kittcatt March 31st, 2006, 02:50 AM Scritching is where you use a fine tooth comb or your fingernails to kinda gently scracpe your scalp. This is especially usefull if you have flake problems. Plus it feel really good.
I don't have an answer to the BBB question. I was actually wondering the same thing myself.
Love Long Hair March 31st, 2006, 02:54 AM BBB's are not meant to "penetrate" the hair . what you does in sections lift the hair away from the area you are brushins from scalp to en to distribute the sebum down the length and gradually move all the hair to the scalp.
the bbb IS also used a smoother for your hair canopy such as when finishing an updo.
the BBB should only be used on completely detangled hair as it will cause damage if you try to use it to detangle.
Madam Librarian March 31st, 2006, 04:09 AM I have iii hair and use a BBB periodically. I have to section my hair in order to reach the scalp. I start with the nape hair, brush it, then part about another inch above, let that hair down, and brush. I do this until I reach the top of my head. No way would the BBB penetrate to the scalp otherwise.
Dvips March 31st, 2006, 03:00 PM Here's a thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=37230) with a good explanation of 'scritching' from Heidi W in it (6th post in the thread). HTH!

TIA!

kittcatt March 31st, 2006, 04:20 PM Thanks for that link Dvips, very helpful info there. I've been doing wrong. still works though!
ginalaurie March 31st, 2006, 05:10 PM I read about scritching for the first time a few days ago and gave it a try with a medium toothed MP comb (the detangler) because I didn't have a fine toothed one. I thought I was being gentle and didn't even use near as many passes on my scalp as they recommend on the longhairs website (I think they say about 80), and it felt good at the time, but the next day my scalp felt kinda irritated. I guess it may be something you need to work up to gradually or maybe the comb I was using wasn't right. I may try it again after awhile. It took several days for my scalp not to feel irritated and itchy, though.

see what happens when your baby sits on your lap when you type and you forget to spell check and reread before posting. SORRY
what you do is in sections lift the hair away from the area you are brushing then brush from scalp to ends to distribute the sebum down the length. gradually move all over the head brushing the hair from scalp to ends.
i usually start at the back of the head and just above the neck and work my way around and up towards the front of the hairline.
hmm that reads so much better. again sorry.

I have M/C iii hair and I use a MP brush with mixed boar and nylon bristles. The nylon bristles and longer and stiffer and do a good job of getting through the mass of my hair so the boar bristles can really work. I love using it for giving myself scalp masses and I comb the oils through my hair.
starblonde13 April 6th, 2006, 08:08 PM I have started scritching and, everyone is right, it feels great! Also, I bought some oil called Ginseng Miracle Wonder 8 Oil. It has no mineral oil or petroleum in it. I bought a boar bristle brush that is supposed to be for African/American hair. The bristles are stiffer and more sparse. It works great. We'll see if my hair will stop breaking soon.
