I just wanted to let you know that I love these new boards. The features are fun. :D You are doing a great job. Thank you for all of your hard work. I appreciate it.

These boards seeming to be working out fabulously! Granted, a few features (namely threads, but I know you're working on it :) ) that would be nice, but all-in-all, a tremendous improvement over Net54!!!

Thanks! :)

If things can be fixed to work more like the Net54 boards, minus the foul ups of course :D I would be/feel happier here. I like these boards okay I would jus like it if all posts could be seen the way we could see them at Net54 and I would like it if the order of the posts would stay the same instead of the way they move around...otherwise I'm fine with it here.

Thanks for caring Steph and thanks for asking us what we want to do :)

EEEEK I screwed up! I meant to vote THIS BOARD and I hit Net 54.... ACCCCKKKKK delete my answer! I want this board definetly. I prefer the ease of use, interesting features and stability of Net54. My only hang up is the way the posts keep rearranging, but I know your working on it, and NO PRESSURE!!! you take care of yourself and that little one first young lady, you hear me!

But please change my answer... pretty please!

I think I could get used to these boards if the view of the messages are able to be changed. If the posting threads remain as is, it's too confusing, less personal and just gets me feeling like I'm lost and don't know how everyone is doing. I like to be able to follow the threads, and here you can't do that at all. The posts move around, you can't see who replied to what... So, I guess I'm still for Net54 unless that can be changed.

these boards are so easy to use. and fun!

February 26th, 2003, 12:16 AM
I really like the flat view and that the post are bumping and all the features. It is sooooooo easy for me to see whats new and to answer posts (and to make change text, color etc etc). If threaded view it would be confusing with the bumping.

I know you said people will be able to choose what view they want but I really think it would be strange if someones post bumps and someones doesn't. The one who choose no bumping could miss alot of conversations and it could divide the community into two just by the way one is choosing to view posts?!

I'm like Fox. I find it hard to keep up with all the replies and posts on this board. When I come here, I usually only have a few minutes to take a quick peek. Then in the evening is when I would have time to write a reply or ask a question, but then I have a hard time finding where I wanted to post. Now, I know I'm not one to post often any way, so I think what I have so say should go to the bottom of the consideration pile. :) Also, I know that there are a few 'tricks to the trade' that I could learn that might make it easier to navigate aroound here. So give me time, I'll come around!

Thanks for all you do and take care of youself and the baby

I didn't vote because there wasn't an option for "don't care either way." In general, I tend to prefer a threaded view, but I've gotten kind of used to a flat view from other boards I visit so it's not a huge deal to me. This board is nice and seems to work well, and the PM option is nice. And I LOVE being notified in my email when a thread I've posted on is replied to. (That way I can look at it at work without being tempted to hang around and surf aimlessly.)

So, I guess my answer is do whatever you wanna do, Steph. :)

WElllllll..........I miss net54, BUT, I do like it here, and I didn't think I would. It does feel a wee bit more IMpersonal. I liked how at net54, it just felt like everyone was breathing down my neck -- like they were sitting RIGHT NEXT to me. :DD And I liked to be notified when someone responded to ME, not the whole thread. However, I am getting used to it over here. It's definitely more stable, and I like all the features. And heck....everyone IS HERE! So, that's where I want to be. :DD

I can't believe you found such a great board, Steph!

The threads are right there, highlighted if you've already read
them, the old posts move away, the popular topics stay on top,
the emoticons enable the true intent of our text - assisting in
keeping down misunderstandings, private messages are superb,
edit feature is amazing, message body html right up there
for all to see and use, email notification of a reply, I mean,
why in the world would we want to go back to a plain old board?

All I have to do each day is click on a particular board,
and those which have been highlighted have already been read...
that is what the option is for, making it so easy to keep up, I love it!

(for those who don't know, there is "MARK ALL TOPICS READ" link at the top right of the boards, click on it and it will make your life easier.) :D

Chat room, search feature, list of all members ( a phone book, so to speak), quote ability, profile. Does it get any better?

This is great! We don't have to read every reply, only those
we find interest in, and if someone wants to make certain you
get or see a certain message, poof, there's the pm box!

Nothing complicated at all, I found it very user friendly quickly.
It's all laid out for us and I am thankful, thankful, thankful
for a board with personality and color.

Thank you, Steph, you're a doll!

I'm with Fox here. If the threaded view is created, I would be happy here, but as it is, it feels way less friendly and interactive to me. I know that in this format I'm missing a lot of posts and it just feels more formal to me. I don't feel as comfortable just popping in with a hello post; I feel now like my posts need more "substance" to be posted - just because of the layout here. I like seeing everything in a threaded view and pinpointing where I want to go. I can also see in a flash who has responded to me and I can immediately respond to them without having to dig around. Can't do that here!

Whatever you decide, Steph, I really really appreciate all your effort, work and caring. And, you can't make everyone happy, I know. Whatever is decided, I'll be here on some level. :)

I wouldn't vote for Network 54 because it is expensive and it is not fair for Steph to pay for it alone.
But I definitely miss the threaded view - so I guess I can only repeat what Fox, Avrilon and Maggie said. One thing for sure - I will be where community decides to be, so don't mind me...

i like these boards better.

network 54 was always hanging up and stalling for me. i want everything to load instantly!!!

i also like the flat view. i feel like now everyone is part of the conversation. before, i could skip over someone's reply, but now i see them all. this is a good thing, no?

like i wrote before, there's the personal message option for the, ahem, chatty.. :P it's possible to respond directly and personally to a post.

i really love all the bells and whistles in this format.

one thought- perhaps we could keep the network54 boards in their free-of-charge state, so in case we need to, we can go there in an "emergency"?

First of all I want to thank Stephanie for all her caring and hard work. You really have taken on a lot of hard work. I'm finally getting used to things over here and liking a lot of it. It loads a lot faster for one thing. I have a very slow dialup connection and this new site really makes a difference. I would vastly prefer the threaded view. Then I can see who has posted a response. I don't have time to re-read every thread and see if there are new posts. I know I am missing a lot. I don't always remember the title of the original post and I have a hard time remembering the ones I have responded to. With the threaded view I could see that. I find the bouncing threads so frustrating. I keep losing track of things I have responded to. If we could get the treaded view and no more bouncing posts that would have the more homey feel like we had at the old boards.

I really like the e-mail thing. That is so cool. I love seeing I have new messages. I've only been in the chat room a couple times but it seems ok to me but I don't see how to PM someone in chat.

I do like the small emoticons but those gigantus smilies.......BLECK!!!!! I still find those so annoying. I see this huge smilie face and I just want to nail that sucker.

I think once the bugs are worked out over here so it functios more like Net54 minus the headaches, things will be great. But bottom line, I can't expect Steph to foot the bill for all this. And I don't think we want a pay site. We've been thru that scenario before and I would not care to re-visit that.

The more I use these boards, the more I like them. To be honest, I would NOT consider going back to net54 after adjusting to these boards. It is INSANE for you to have to pay the HIGH fees for us to use net54. I feel it is incredibly generous of you to offer for us to continue to use net54, but it really is not fair to you. These boards are faster, more reliable, free monetarily to you (I don't even want to know how much time you have spent working on these boards so far!), and these boards are a blast to use.

I would like to be able to respond to replies in a thread, but if that takes a while or can't be done, honestly, I can live with that. Not being able to reply to specific responses does change the feel of this board a bit, but on the flip side, being able to private message someone is a great way for us to become closer to members we wouldn't normally hold private conversations with. I know some people find it confusing, but I personallly LOVE the way popular topics jump to the top. You can click on a dead topic and bring it to life again by putting it up top again!

Well, that is my 2 cents, or 5 cents, or whatever lol :)

Thank you Steph for every single minute you have spent working on maintaining our community and providing us a format to use that is personally tailored to our preferences

JMHO.

I really like the way these boards are running now. Exactly. the format is very clean-looking and user-friendly! Like someone said before, the "threaded view" can sometimes be very cluttered, and I too tend to get flustered, and sadly only end up reading the first page (and maybe skimming the second page). This messageboard allows for more topic to be displayed on the first page ... far more than the Net54 forum (of course, this all depends on how many responses there are to a particular thread!). Did that make any sense?! LOL!

Regarding, threads bumping to the top ... what I really like about this style is that everyone gets to read that person's post. However, using the "threaded view", countless times I've gone back searching for older threads to print out (for example, a fab recipe for deep conditioning 8) ), only to have discovered someone added a response a week later to said thread that seemed to have gotten lost ... so in essence, we are really missing reading more posts this way! I think it's only fair that if someone takes the time to reply to a post (especially if it is a long response) that it get read ... and bumping it to the top will aid this. So, this is especially great for those (like myself!) who don't get a chance to read the messageboard everyday.

With that said, whatever the majority vote on, I'll be happy with because this is such a *great* community with amazing personalities full optimism and positive energy!!!! Again, "thank you" Stephanie for all your hard work! xo

maximum luv,

Steph, I'm starting to enjoy the many features this site offers, and I wouldn't want to go back to the expense and instability of Net54. BUT, I do miss the threaded views and the Net54 format for posting directly in response to a specific message. As someone said to me, at Net54 it seemed like we were all in one big room where it was warm, and cozy, and intimate. Here it feels as though there are walls between us. If there is way around this (and I know you are working on it!), then I vote to stay here. The bells and whistles are fun, but it would be sooo much better if there was a way to create more warmth.

Thanks for ALL you are doing, Steph -- you truly are the BEST!!!

I've thought about this all night (ok, 1:30am to 8:30 . . . but I did get sleep - without dreams ;) )

I will go where the community goes

I decided to list pros and cons (aka This format and Net54)

This format:

1. Emoticons. My favorites are:  :?  ;) :DD :face:   and last but not least . . . :suspect:

2. PM feature . . . I love it!

3. Some of the great posts (like 20 questions) stays on top.

4. I can see who is on the boards (and in chat).

5. :Star: :Star: :Star: STARS We can earn STARS :Star: :Star: :Star:

6. Everyone is here! (ok, a few are missing and a few aren't posting as much :no :( but maybe they'll "come around".

hmmmm, That's it for now.

Ok,

Net54

1. Threaded views: I can see HOW and in what direction a thread is taking at a glance. Dulci called it "organic" . . . I like that word.

2. I could load pictures easily, at will.

3. It was simple.

:( but there was no PM ability or the great smilies.

Various comments:

Net54 is the only format I've ever used. So I am used to it. Change is never easy . . . that's why most people don't do it voluntarily!

I will go where the community goes, even if it means I have to learn . . . darn it!

This are VERY different here . . . but I'd say, for the most part BETTER! <looking around . . . Did I say that???? ;)

I think one reason I've been posting so much is to get used to the features. It is helping, but it IS different.

Different does not always equal bad.

I think I'm yammering on now, (and I have to skate my way across town to school! :( ). I guess my bottom line is this:

If we can have these boards and have a free version of net54 as a backup, that is good. If and WHEN Steph is able to make a threaded view, then that will be great too, but I can probably live with out it, probably! ;)

I have to bundle up and go to school now, but I guess the Cliff Notes Version is stay here.

I really don't care where the site is, but I hate moving around. I'm a creature of habit, and I don't like having to figure out new boards. lol.

I'm here now, and it seems just fine to me. It is obvious that you put a great deal of time and effort into this board. It is more reliable, and more afforadable for you Steph, so I say stick with it. It's your board! You provide it, free of charge, to anyone who wants to join in; so do what you like, and tell everyone else to get with the program.

So the features are different from the last board. Nothing remains the same; it is just a matter of us rut-loving people adapting to the new board. In two months there will probably be no more references to Network 54.

You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. You're doing a great job, and being much more accomodating than I would be. lol (I get worked up to easily ::grins::)

Keep up the GREAT work! (But not so much that you don't have time for baby!)

ditto to everything Karen Marie said (great Karens think alike :P )

i love the bumping up feature -- it will help us from duplicating previous posts. then when Martine says, "Karen don't you remember we talked about X two months ago." I can go back, use search, and bump that thread to the top. OR a new member asks something that has been asked ad nauseum (but isn't in the faq), we can just bump the post. At NC.com, bumping threads to talk about various products or salon recommendations is used a lot and I really like it there!

I really miss the Network 54 boards, and it does seem a little more formal and confusing here. But, in view of how much network 54 charges, it doesn't seem like an option to go back there. And, I agree that we should pick one board and stick to it. I don't have time to check two boards.

Thanks for all your hard work Stephanie. I feel the choice should largely be up to you and the other moderators, as y'all have more on the line here than we do. Y'all have to do the hard work, while the rest of us get to enjoy the boards.

Is my understanding correct that these boards are free? Or, do they charge a fee, too?

I do miss being able to reply to a particular person rather than all the posts just getting stuck at the end of the list.

BUT the thousands of things I love about this board more than make up for that. I love the colours, the emoticons, the avatars, PM, mark all as read, popular threads staying at the top, the links for jumping to the newest posts, the icons showing which threads have new replies, the reliability.

I'm happy here and I'd like to stay 8)

Hi Merry et all,

Yes, the boards are free to members.

The financial and time burden all lies on Steph's shoulders,
but there is the option of contributing to the forum owner.

However, the free will (and not by demand)
option of donating to the site is always appreciated
by the list owner.

http://contribute.longhaircommunity.com

Though times are hard and no one by any means is
expected to contribute, even a dollar helps.

Besides, Jake will need diapers, onesies, cribs, bibs
and pacifiers.
:D
Steph will need aspirin, hot towels, chocolate and valium.

miss the threaded view, but I LOVE the way the threads that are "seeing action" keep getting bumped to the top of the list, and I LOVE the little orange papers that say "Something new here; check it out!"

I also, as Hollie said, liked it when I was notified that someone replied to MY post, rather than "a thread in which you participated has seen some action" to find out that it was somehting that wasn't directed at me (golly, CAN we say "Narcissism"???? bwaahahahaha)

I think this board is kickin', though, Steph, and think there's more activity here than there was at the old boards. I do kinda miss out on some of it, though, because the titles of the sub-posts are hidden. There was a post where someone asked Kitty just how she measured. I participated in that thread and we went on some WILD rabbit trails (one major one was MY doing, but oh well) and a person wouldn't have known it because of the non-threaded view. But, that just teaches me that I've gotta go diggin a little........ Kinda like a scavenger hunt; those are always fun!!!

VERY appreciative of the work you do for all of us, and VERY appreciative of the thick skin you must have (and the tough backbone) to ASK us to tell you what we really think. I'd need Demerol before-, during-, and after- asking such a thing....... Way to go, girl!

I'm a newbie, but I really like these boards. It's a style I'm more familiar with, so it seemed less threatening to join in than Network54 did. I think that if there hadn't been a switch or a move, then I probably would've just remained lurking.

We've all whinged and groaned about the hassles and breakdowns with the N54 boards (I do think the frees as a back up might be a good idea tho) and Steph has done all the work to find us a less "draughty" home!!

I know what people mean about the threaded views on the other boards, but I do like the features here too. You can quote people, which is very handy, you can PM people too, which has been a great help, especially if you don't want something in the public domain or want to ask a discreet question. I can get used to the differences, maybe I will learn a few new skills along the way. (Hey, so i need to learn a bit of html or whatever....so be it) I like these too :face: because they express so much *hahahahahaha*. I like that I can make the settings do what I need them to (like set GMT, I used to freak with the other times because I could never remember how far ahead/behind people were) and I like the fact that there is a re-cap frame when you reply to a post......that's very cool. Especially if like me, you forget loadsa stuff.......*boing*

I will go where the community goes, will still check N54 boards if we keep 'em as a back up..........you girls and guys are too good to lose.

Steph and the Mods......your call.

Bethany

I have to admit I miss the threaded view of Network 54 more than I thought I would. It gives a sort of "quick overview" of the conversation that let me decide if I was interested before I clicked on the thread (I always used the "view entire thread" feature.) And, it let me quickly see whether anyone had responded to one of my posts. :-)

I also think some of the features here cause more problems then they solve -- like the ability to change the color of the text, which leaves me straining to read large blocks of light-colored text against a light-colored background.

I'm also not sure about the stars, which I know can cause 2 kinds of problems for other boards that use them: they can encourage people to post for the sake of posting rather than because they have something to say (which is OK in moderation, of course, but bad if boards end up with way more "fluff" than substantive posts, which can happen), and they make it easy to classify people into groups, with the people with lots of stars having "seniority" over people who don't. Not that I necessarily think that this will happen here, mind, but I know it's a battle that other boards with a similar system have fought.

That all said, I think Steph has done a wonderful job on this board (thanks, Steph!!!), and that it has some great features that make it better than Network 54 (besides the price).

On the old board, conversations usually didn't long survive being bumped to the second page no matter how well they going before the bumping, cutting intereting conversations prematurely short. It also meant that people who may have had great advice to contribute on a particular topic couldn't do it if, say, they were gone a few days and the conversation had been bumped before they got back. They could still post, of course, but who would read it?

Also, on the old board, there was no easy way to keep track of which posts you had read and which you hadn't if you read the posts "thread-at-once" as I did (or if you read the boards on multiple computers). I know I missed a lot of posts to threads I had already read though once because, thanks to the threaded view, the new posts showed up in the *middle* of the thread-at-once screen, where I didn't notice them amidst the threads I had already read.

This board fixes both these problems beautifully. And my signature doesn't keep vanishing, to boot.

However, I agree that I wish there were a closed-mouth smiley. :D

I sign in twenty times a day (or so ::grins:: ) to check the posts, and I can just look at the top of the board to see any new ones! They aren't threaded, but this means that I don't have to play "hunt the posts." The posts are always at the bottom.

Yea! I don't have to waste time digging around for them. Very convient.

I really like this board Steph!!

I probably spend less time reading and posting because I don't want to go searching for new posts in things I've already read. It's not too obvious if someone's in chat, so I spend less time chatting. These are all good things! Long hair is fun, and its nice to have a supportive friendly group, but there's always higher priority stuff I should be doing!

However, I don't care. The person who coordinates it all should do what's best and easiest. The rest of us will hang out whatever cyberhome you choose. :D

I'm very much in favor of the "bump-up" it is more like some of the other boards I frequent. It would be nice if everyone was a bit more descriptive in the "title" of the first post. With the threaded view the theme "Ususally" becomes more apparent as it drops down, this also exposes the tangents sometime taken. This is where the concept of staying "on-topic" becomes more important. Off topic comments are best made in a new post. That way people can follow the one of real interest (stays at the top) and the other can drift to the bottom. This keeps the most popular discussions current. As with anything new,it takes some adaptation.........but we'll get used to it.

So many have mentioned the "ease" of picture loading in netqwerk 54, Do you all forget how long the struggle was to learn it? I've coached dozens of people through it from chat or on the boards. Once Steph finds some up-load space to link from we will be able to post pics here too.

All in all I'm in favor of this place.

is perfect just the way it is. I like the view and the bumping.

If I could figure out to put my dollie in my sig like on the old boards, I would like this one just as well. 8)
The threaded thing would be cool if it can be done, if not, oh well.
Otherwise, here is cool. As long as we pick one or the other. :D

I really like these new boards and am figuring them out slowly but surely.

I just got one question Steph... How do I post my siggy dollie in the profile, so i do not have to keep opening freepicshost all the time?

As to the different view, I think the human brain naturally hates change, but it's sooo good for it.

I voted for these boards and here's why:

I lurked at LongHairCommunity and *another* hair website for a long time but never joined in because the threaded views feel like someone's conversation and I didn't want to interrupt. I know that's silly because people do join somehow, but that's just my view.

What you said doesn't sound silly at all. It actually makes a lot of sense. I'm glad you aren't lurking anymore!!

Cheers Equestrian!!! {{{{waves frantically}}}

I've been thinking about you lately and ... missed reading your posts! I hope all is well with you! 8) Regarding responding to replies in a thread, well, that's what the "QUOTE" function is for! *wink*

Thank you Madigan!!!! I've been thinking about you too. I love belonging to an online community where we genuinely care about each other!
All IS very well with me, aside from being an idiot and not resting a sprained wrist enough so that it is taking TOO long to heal, I'm doing great! I hope all is well with you as well!

Ummm, you are absolutely right lol. The "QUOTE" function is quite handy lol. ;)

Hey, very good point LONGHAIR!!!!

I'm all in favor of this place too. I already deleted my link to the Net54board :D

Dittos to all the good things that have been said about these boards. I don't miss the threaded format nearly as much as I thought I would (or perhaps I'm just getting used to this one). I initially thought the bumping up of topics would drive me nuts. It did with the threaded view because someone could add something in the middle of the thread, bump the whole thing up and I couldn't tell what was new in the thread. When you clicked on "view thread" on the old boards it didn't change the color of the posts that had been read, so I'd have to search for that new reply. Anyway, since all the new replies are at the end of each thread here, it's easy to find them when the post gets bumped to the top.

The benefits of this board far outweigh the benefits of Net54. The Community made the Net54 boards such a wonderful place. These boards will be whatever we make them.

Thank you, Steph, for doing such a wonderful job! :D

These boards are our new home. However, seems we all miss the feature allowing us to view the subject heads of the entire thread. Hope someday that'll be available here. Otherwise, we're all adjusting, so hope it's worthwhile for you! Thanks!

my thoughts are first that we go where it's easiest for you steph. second, i prefer this board immensely over the net54 boards. aside from all the times it would mysteriously be down for lengthy periods of time, i just felt that format was cumbersome. personally, i don't like a threaded view. i'm used to formats similar to this board.

the one feature i'd put on a wish list is the ability to edit my own posts. i'm used to the poster and the moderators having the ability to edit posts, and it's the only thing i'm missing here. i'm having to work at remembering to preview before i post.

same here! I lurked for a long time because I hesitated to intrude on what was already an established community. That is not to say you all were anything but welcoming when I did finally delurk! It's just hard to break in the middle of what seems to be a conversation between friends if you're naturally shy.

Well, I didn't read this whole thread, but Steph-
this is the coolest board I've ever seen in my life. :D

I'm going to make it my homepage soon, and I am excited to get to know everyone again.
Plus there are new folks all over and everyone seems so nice!

GREAT Job! I don't know how you do it, woman!

Good luck with everything. (<--- Cutest. Smilie. Ever.)

I too liked the Network 54 boards b/c it was easy. Here, I am just learning by pushing buttons-first attempt at posting wound up being a private message. Feels kind of dangerous, but I think I'll get the hang of it  Ooh, emoticon button I hope!

I'll go where ever the community goes.
I dont want to see something happen like last year and we dont want a pay site either. That to me is very worth giving up Net54.
This is more cost effective and easy for Steph to run. Not to mention she kept the LHC in the pretty font I love :D

Anyhow everyone has already moved in sooooo........
I am pulling up a comfy chair, getting something to drink and not moving :)

Did I mention I am a complete addict and need LHC

i like these boards better.
network 54 was always hanging up and stalling for me. i want everything to load instantly!!!
i also like the flat view. i feel like now everyone is part of the conversation. before, i could skip over someone's reply, but now i see them all. this is a good thing, no?
like i wrote before, there's the personal message option for the, ahem, chatty.. :P it's possible to respond directly and personally to a post.
i really love all the bells and whistles in this format.
one thought- perhaps we could keep the network54 boards in their free-of-charge state, so in case we need to, we can go there in an "emergency"?

I agree with everything Heathers said. I like the Emoticons too! :DD

I have two questions:

first of all, when I first answered this thread, I never saw the poll feature!! I kept wondering WHERE people were voting!!! And I SWEAR, then next several times I looked to see what people wrote, there was no poll feature. TODAY, however there is one! whahappened???!!! So, I voted today to stay! hahahaahahah ;)

Question # 2: How long will this Sticky Q stay on top?

And comment : Did you know this one thread alone has been viewed over 1200 times???!! WOW!

Stephers, how's Jake doing?

Stephanie

I want to thank everyone who participated in this poll, whether publicly or anonymously. I really appreciate it. I'll let this thread "float to the bottom" now. ;)

Reading back over this thread, it's really amazing how much support there is for the community as a whole. Not for me, but the community. It's really cool (for lack of a better word LOL).

To address the few questions about the board format, I am still working on getting you all the optional threaded view. It may take me a little while to get it, as there is a lot of work involved and many files to write and change, but I will get it. Even if I have to pay someone to write the code for me. I think it's important.

Much love to the community!
