View Full Version : Introducing Myself
Missymoo February 25th, 2003, 08:38 AM I've been lurking for awhile here and finally decided to start posting. I spend most of my time on a naturally curly board because I'm curly. I haven't stepped foot into a salon in almost five years. First off I'm 35 and I do color with RC haircolor about three times a year. My hair is somewhere between brastrap and waist and it's very curly and very fine/thin. It's hard to know what advice to follow for my hair since most of the long hair advice is huge no-no's to curly haired people. I am fortunate to live in Norfolk VA - only 92 miles from the Richmond GM salon. I really want to go for the treatment/trim and I've got questions for you experts. Are they going to respect that I have a high forhead and rather large nose and therefore can't imagine life without bangs, and my hair naturally parts on the left so I don't fight that. I've read all about the GM philosophy of all one length hair parted on the right but I'd look hideous. Are they going to brush my hair - again a huge no-no for curly hair. I know it's time for me to go in for professional trim, I would feel much safer in the hands of a long haired specialist because I've worked way too hard to walk in and see my hair get hacked to shoulder length (or worse) by some overzealous hair cutter. The pics from you ladies who've had the treatment are quite convincing but I notice all you have relatively straight hair..is it just as worthwhile on curly hair? Sorry so long - I promise in the future to be less descriptive.
Carolyn February 25th, 2003, 08:44 AM Hi Missymoo, glad you de-lurked and joined in here. Sorry I don't have any advice since I'm a straightie but just wanted to say welcome and have fun here. I know someone with curly hair will have some advice for you.
Teacherbear February 25th, 2003, 08:45 AM Welcome to the boards Missymoo!! I love your name!!!!
and YESSSSSSSSSSS we'll respect you . . . :) (as long as you give respect) --- (sorry for the bit of seriousness there! I'll try not to be serious again for a long time! hahahaah)
Anyway . . . what you need, is to talk to Dulci!!!!!!
<yelling for Dulci> DDDDDDDdddddddduuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllll- - - cccccccccccccccccccccccccccciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
(people usually are right around the corner when I yell, so she ought to be in here in a second telling me I didn't have to yell! ;) hahaah)
Dulci and I went to the GM salon in Frisco TX (N. of Dallas) with Snippet about 3 weeks ago. Dulci has long botticelli curls (I think that's what she calls them . . . I call them GORGEOUS) and her hair is classic length!
We have several people here who follow the Curly Girl routine. We understand that Curlies have different brushing/combing requirements than straights or even wavies.
I hope you look around and see what you like! :) We're new to this forum, so some of us are still a little lost! ;)
Enjoy yourself, get a cup of coffee (or a soda) and hang around a while! :)
Melusina February 25th, 2003, 08:53 AM Welcome, Missymoo! 8)
February 25th, 2003, 09:06 AM Welcome Missymoo

Glad you joined us!

DweamGoiL February 25th, 2003, 09:20 AM glad you delurked :P
RedButterfly February 25th, 2003, 09:23 AM I'm so happy to welcome another curly to the board! :D I also have curly/wavy, fine textured hair. There is a lot of good advice on the board for us. My hair has really improved a great deal since I joined LHC.
I think you should try out your GM salon. I wish one was closer to me. They will roll your hair to straighten it a bit before they brush it. Brushing will be fine when your hair is roller set. I safely brush my hair when it is roller set.
Welcome to LHC. You will love it here! :)
KT February 25th, 2003, 09:30 AM Welcome!
You can tell from my sig that I have absolutely no advice to offer you LOL! But we have some lovely curlies around here who can be a little more helpful 8)

Other neat stuff here deleted from original quote :)
I think Missymoo was asking if the GM salon would respect her wishes to keep her bangs due to her high forehead... if I read that right.
WELCOME Missymoo and as the ultimate straightie, I have nothing of value to offer in that regard. Listen to Teacherbear: she is the GM guru and will be leading me through my first GM visit to Dallas whenever we get that one figured out. ;)
Missymoo February 25th, 2003, 09:52 AM :) Aw thanks everyone for replying. Yep when I asked about respecting my wishes I meant about the bangs. They are a constant topic among curlies but I really NEED them - they aren't optional for me. I'm going to go ahead and make my appointment, just can't not go when they are only 92 miles away.
Skeeter February 25th, 2003, 09:55 AM It is good to see you. Glad you delurked. I am sure the salon will respect your wishes. I hope so because I too have a high forehead with bangs to cover them :-)
I hope to go for a treatment myself sometime.
I wish I had some of your curl.. I am a straighty too.
Anyway... welcome to the boards!
:)

<DOH>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <slapping head> I really should read more carefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahaahahahahahahaa
Ok, yeah . . . um . . . they might quote the THEORY of all one length hair, but I don't think a GM person would try to "make' you do anything . . . .
<whispering to GoldLady . .> Did I do better than time?!  ;) hahahahaahha
Sorry, for misunderstanding Missymoo!
charlyee February 25th, 2003, 10:11 AM I have absolutely no advice to give you, I have very loosely wavey hair and their is no GM salon within 400 miles of where I live.
I hope your visit to the salon is a success, I am sure they will respect your wishes.
Welcome & take care :)
Pixna February 25th, 2003, 10:22 AM WELCOME, Missymoo!! (Great name, BTW!!) :D
Missymoo February 25th, 2003, 10:27 AM :D

Hollie February 25th, 2003, 10:44 AM Hi Missymoo!!!! Nice to meet you!! :D
Dulci February 25th, 2003, 11:07 AM Glad you're here. :)
I took this hair to the GM salon in Dallas a few weeks ago:
well heck, I can't connect to my image site, click here to see: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/viewtopic.php?t=114
My guess is that they will talk to you about no-bangs, one-length hair [just nod politely LOL]; they will rollerset it so that it parts on the right (no biggie, just wash your hair 3 days later and part it where you want); and they will trim your hair when dry to a U-shape (make sure this is what you want).
He also had me bend forward at the waist after the rollerset was taken out and attempt to brush from the nape but we quickly gave that idea up when the brush was almost lost in my hair LOL.
Heather posted a link to a recent discussion we had about curly hair and the GM method, (thanks Heather!) some more of my thoughts are in that thread.
I went mainly because I got to meet two others from the board (HI Teacherbear and Snippet!) AND it was kinda like going to Mecca, if you know what I mean. I always wanted to get the GM treatment done at least once. :)
Tresses February 25th, 2003, 11:44 AM Welcome, Missymoo! :D
Feye February 25th, 2003, 11:50 AM Welcome! I see you already got some great replies :)

snippet February 25th, 2003, 04:06 PM Greetings MissyMoo!
As I straight one I know squat about curlies. I literally flipped out when I felt Dulci's hair! And Teacherbear has fine fragile hair, so I no longer think of her as a smooth hair implement freak. :)
I don't recall anyone speaking up about going to the salon in Norfolk. If you do go, be sure to give us a report! I'm interested in hearing what they say about your part, we've had a discussion about that. I think they want a right side part just to give your hair some volume and that swoop. I'd use the information for special occassions but keep my part where it normally lies for everyday.
I think the protein treatment is good for anyone - curly or straight. The roller set will straighten your hair some, but it didn't last long for Dulci. But I loved her hair! Gosh, it had so much body and beatiful big curls!
At any rate, welcome to LHC and post often
Arcticpixie February 25th, 2003, 09:27 PM Oh please stay descriptive :) Can't help you much on either the GM or the Curly, but I can give you a big ol welcome!
so....
Welcome!
heeheehee had to do that!
gabiwags February 25th, 2003, 10:08 PM Hiya Missymoo - for obvious reasons I am delighted you are here ... ;) ...g
Fox February 25th, 2003, 10:30 PM I hope you enjoy the boards. Since I've never been to a GM salon (really want to though!) I don't have any advice there. Everyone who has gone has always had such nice things to say about it, so I hope your visit will be great!
zoya_ February 26th, 2003, 04:09 AM Welcome, Missymoo, glad you decided to join us!
