Can anyone suggest a good online (free) site with
a list of all foods with calories and fat content, or
perhaps a site with a few good menu ideas for someone
in need of losing weight?

No, not for me, for hubby.

www.fitday.com

you have to sign up (its always free) but i *highly* recommend this site - you track your weight loss by entering what you ate that day in the extremely easy to use (and huge) food database, very user friendly and detailed. you can even calculate your calories burned for the day, there are tons of tools to help meet nutrition/weight goals. definetely one to check out.

blurs the eyes after a while.. but good nonetheless ;)

USDA National Nutrient Database

fast food calorie information.

for cooking ideas i recommend:

www.recipezaar.com
they have quite a collection of recipes whether you are looking for low-fat, low-calorie, diabetic, or whatever, and the advanced search is *great*, once you get the hang of it.

http://www.lowcaldiner.com/

http://www.fatfree.com/
this one is vegetarian, but it has a good assortment of recipes.

have fun! (and good luck to your hubby! :D )

Thank you ALL so much for your suggestions.

Sweet Peach, MY GOSH, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
That is fantastic! The first site you mentioned sounds
like a super one, I'll be sure to visit that one first.

Thank you all sooooo much!

I second that choice - FitDay is fantastic! It takes a little effort at first, because to be accurate you should customise the database to reflect the foods *you* (or in the case hubbie) eats - if you compare your labels you'll find some big difference in some cases. But once you have done that (and it won't take long, because you'll find you eat from the same set of foods for most of the time) you just click on the food and it adds it all up for you - not just calories, but where they came from (fat, carbs, protein), and also what vitamins and minerals you got too :)

I've used all the other sites listed too, and they are useful if you just want to check up on a single food item, and can be handy in filling in the gaps where FitDay doesn't know the food.

(Can I just add here that as a Brit, you Americans don't half eat some odd stuff, and some of the obvious things we eat all the time aren't in there at all! It's really interesting actually :))

A word of warning though - check your serving sizes! Once I couldn't figure out how on earth I'd managed to eat 4000 calories in one day until I noticed I'd entered the butter on my toast as 1 cup1 rather than 1 teaspoon LOL!
