View Full Version : Distilled water?
Godspeed December 26th, 2005, 02:58 PM This might sound stupid, but where do you guys get your distilled water? I have seen this mentioned a lot when people talk about what they put in their misters.
Distilled water is water that is boiled and the steam is cooled down so it becomes water again right? (You can really tell I paid attention at school huh? :P)
So, do you do this yourself of what? I guess distilled water is better because it has no chemichals etc. in it, but I have never seen this sold in any stores or anything.
daughter of eve December 26th, 2005, 03:01 PM I've always found distilled water in the bottled water section of the grocery store.
Wind December 26th, 2005, 03:14 PM Usually distilled water is in the bottled water section of most grocery stores or supermarkets. If you can't find it, I'd ask at customer service for it, I'm sure they must have it somewhere.
silencepainter December 26th, 2005, 03:18 PM yup most stores will have it in the bottled water section. I remember my mom buying it when I was little to put in her iron.
darkwaves December 26th, 2005, 03:21 PM I often buy it at the drugstore -- again, in the bottled water section. (I think drugstores/pharmacies often carry it because it's purified, so safe for mixing with baby formula, or medications, or...) It's very inexpensive -- less than the drinking water they sell.
princess.aj December 26th, 2005, 04:25 PM I get mine at walmart in the bottled drinks/water area....I drink only distilled water
b/c I travel so much, the change in waters can really get you sick.
KarenLynn December 26th, 2005, 04:55 PM I can't say I've seen it in Norway, but I must admit I never looked *that* hard. I guess I'd try pharmacies, maybe big grocery stores. Maxi or Smart club might have it... aren't you in the Oslo area? Oh, and distilled water is used to refill car batteries, so if nowhere else, maybe gas stations or something like Biltema?
Hope you find it somewhere!
Dulci December 26th, 2005, 05:05 PM My grocery store keeps the distilled water in the baby aisle.
Am December 26th, 2005, 08:53 PM Can I ask - what difference does using distilled water instead of regular water make to your hair? (I've never heard of using distilled water to wash with before.)
OriginalKat December 27th, 2005, 05:33 AM I've never used distilled water on my hair but I used to drink it. We had distillers though. That was part of the kitchen chore to put some water to distill.
hairobsession December 27th, 2005, 06:07 AM You can find distilled water practically anywhere. Check out your local grocery store!
DMARTINEZ December 27th, 2005, 07:28 AM Distilled water is very soft and pure,I would say. I use it as my final rinse
all the time. Its not expensive and if you use it only as a final rinse,it
lasts a while. I will continue this until we can get a softner!

zule December 27th, 2005, 09:32 AM I really prefer spring water for my hair. I know it has minerals, but I prefer it for drinking than the "dead" taste of distilled water. But I always have distilled water around for irons and such--this way there's no buildup of minerals in them. And certainly it's much better for your car battery.

We have very hard water here, which can be rough on your hair, (mineral buildup, etc).
I am currently using a variation of the "water-only" method. I use distilled water in a rosemary "tea" that I brew up. I use it for "scalp only" rinses and through the length sometimes as well. I also use shea butter on the ends. That's it. So far, so good.
Am December 27th, 2005, 02:55 PM Thanks 5of10. I didn't realise you only used distilled water if you lived in a place with hard water - but that makes a lot of sense. :)
Godspeed December 28th, 2005, 07:53 PM Yes I live in Oslo. I will from now on check in every grocery store for this Hair-holy water :)
My experience is that everything in pharmacies is expensive, so I hope I can find it in a regular store..
Thank you for answering!
KarenLynn December 29th, 2005, 06:12 PM If you do track it down, feel free to let me know where! http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/5.gif I'll look around too - I'll be near Oslo from mid-January to early February.
aisling December 29th, 2005, 11:01 PM As a Finn who've worked in grocery stores I know that in Finland at least you won't find distilled water among the groceries, I'd suppose same thing goes for Norway. You'll have to hunt it down among the car stuff, since this is, as somebody mentioned, the thing you use in car batteries as well. Do you have a Biltema there?
KarenLynn December 30th, 2005, 05:28 AM Aisling - wow, you have Biltema in Finland too? Heh. Very handy store, that. There's at least one I know about in Oslo (Godspeed - it's at Alnabru, in case you don't know.)
StarShine December 30th, 2005, 06:29 AM I use distilled water in everything I make (soaps, lotion, etc). I buy it by the gallon in the grocery store. It's wonderful! Pure H2O is essential if you don't want the extra minerals.

Yes, we have, at least it makes it easy to compare stuff when we all can go to H&M and buy cheap hairtoys and to Biltema and buy distilled water. Swedish shop chains are taking over their neighbouring countries
KarenLynn December 30th, 2005, 02:35 PM H&M - on every corner
Biltema - yup
IKEA - two of them half an hour apart
Clas Ohlson - at least 4 of them in the area
Hmm, what else is Swedish? Oh yes, Indiska. Uh... Filippa K? I think so. We have that too. And I'm sure I'm forgetting lots.
So wow, what's up with that? They must be out to take over the world. Bwahahahah.
I do luuuuurve H&M, though.
Tai Shan Fan December 31st, 2005, 05:11 AM I've never seen distilled water in any shops in my area (old Europe!)
Would boiled water do instead for mixing up leave in sprays? (I think our water is on the hard side, but not really, really hard.)
If not, would bottled mineral water do? (That's cheap here.)
SunCat December 31st, 2005, 03:09 PM Distilled water has all the minerals removed from it. I use filtered water in my misters and ACV/herbal rinses. I have a filter on my kitchen sink.
You would not want to use mineral water on your hair as the minerals will build up in your hair. Drinking Water or Spring Water would be a good choice. You could also boil your water then pour it through a mesh coffee filter or use unbleached paper filters.
Tai Shan Fan January 1st, 2006, 01:28 AM Thanks for the reply Suncat. I'll try that. I have a waterfilter rattling around somewhere in the back of a cupboard!
Thursday January 1st, 2006, 01:48 AM The only place I have ever seen distilled water in the UK is in a weird vending machine in one independent health food shop. You take a 5 gallon bottle and fill it up in the shop! I've never tried it though... I guess it's sold there as it's such a hard water area.
Unfortunately some things which are really really common in the US just aren't in Europe. For example, I met an American girl who had just moved to Germany and was completely amazed that no one had even heard of Hydrogen Peroxide (except me, and I'd only heard of it because of this site!), as it's so common in the US as first aid.

Sorry but I don't know either wat Hydrogen Peroxide is ?
In Belgium you can buy distelled water at the supermarket or at a pharmacy (it's around my corner so I buy it there)
Thursday January 1st, 2006, 06:41 AM Sorry but I don't know either wat Hydrogen Peroxide is ?
It is (I think) some kind of antiseptic that is very popular and common in America for everything from spots to grazed knees to helping heal piercings. However, in Europe most people have never heard of it.
I was just using it as an example of why it might be hard to find distilled water (something common in America) over here :)
