View Full Version : How to live with a big hairtoy collection

With Christmas and hopefully lots of hairtoy presents coming, here's a thread on how to manage big hairtoy collection and how to give attention to all toys as equally as possible. Let's share our hairtoy management tips!

First, here's an example of how to decide what hairtoy to wear if there are lots of options :smirk: :

1. What hairstyle to wear?
=> a) cinnabun: hairsticks, hair fork or bandana?
=> is the weather bad? yes => mamacat hairsticks, select color to suit clothes and mood
=> does my hair need extra protection? yes => bandana, select color to suit clothes and mood
=> if weather is good and my hair doesn't have special needs => select hairsticks or hair fork to suit mood, season and clothes

=> b) French Twist: Do I want to be experimental?
=> No, select a Ficcare that suits clothing
=> Yes, select: French twist comb, Mei Fa hairsticks or hair pins depending on how much risk of hairstyle falling down I want to take

=> c) French or Dutch braid: plain or decorative?
=> plain: select elastics
=> decorative, no extra time: select nice scrunchie or bobble (sp?)
=> decorative, some time to play with hair: select and braid in a ribbon

Other ideas:

* Keep your toys well organized and in good shape (clean, oiled, etc). That way it's easier to remember where a certain toy can be found (not to mention that toys stay in better shape).

*My combing table has a cupboard under it (it's an old wooden aquarium table). Usually I keep only part of my hairtoys on the table. Some, like my entire hairstick collection is always ready for use, while some toys rotate between cupboard and table.

*Hairtoys get (nearly) equal amount of use if they are rotated every season: eg. in summer I wear different sets of hairsticks than in winter. Some people have different boxes for hairtoys meant to wear at different times of the year.

*In "party season" I have fancy toys on the table, and if I have to look super "pro", my combing table has more plain basic toys.

*Every now and then, it's good to check the collection to see if there's anything you'd like to sell, swap or give away.

Have fun playing with your toys! :flower:

I also have a big collection.
I usually decide the night before what style I want to have. Sometimes it is spur of the moment.
I know where everything is and everything has it's place.

eeep. i'm guilty of not being organized (and ultimately stepping on my hair toys, hurting my foot and my pocketbook..)

Those are good tips. I like to have everything where I can see it; out of sight out of mind. So I have a hanging wall organizer, like the clear plastic shoe organizer with lots of compartments for hanging over the door. That can hold big things, like big slides, bun cages, or lots of bunjii hair ties. Smaller stocking organizers with small clear pockets hold things like ficcares, forks, and folded scarves. Then I have a few vases for my hairsticks. This way I can scan my entire collection to pick what I want to wear. Usually if I'm in a hurry it will be a hairstick; short one for a bun, longer one for a fig8. If I have a little more time I'll wear a ficcare or fork. If I'm in a good mood and have lots of patience, I'll try a slide, scarf, or bun cage. If I want to wear my hair down usually I'll carry along either a scrunchie or a cloth headband for when it gets in my way.

Admittedly, my papadonh and mamacat sticks get the most "wear-time" because they never fail me and are the easier to put in an updo. Just like buns are my most common style. They're the fastest and most reliable; usually I can make good cinnamon bun that will last all day in just 1 try with a pair of dymondwood sticks.

Maybe I'll just log out now and go organize my stuff. :) Right now things are a jumble. Maybe I need a bigger toybox? ;)

I have a big collection, but they're all the same sort. Half of my collection is made by Mamacat, and the other half consists of velvet scrunchies. So... for me it's a matter of which color, and it's important for me to keep them all in different places.. to stumble upon them. :silly:

I've made an effort lately to wear my hair in ways that traditionally wouldn't be my first choice, that includes using the hairtoys that always get less wear-time. I'm lazy, so it's very easy for me to use the same hair sticks every single day or the same clip. So for the past few weeks I haven't allowed myself to use my favorite toys. And I've actually gotten some compliments, so I guess I'm doing ok. :)
