View Full Version : Any healthy breakfast suggestions?
Rachel June 2nd, 2003, 11:11 AM Dare I take this forum away from the wildly popular menstrual thread? :D I'm wondering if any of you can give me some healthy breakfast ideas... I feel like I'm getting stuck in a rut!
The only thing is, that it can't be too high in sugar (I'm hypoglycemic, so if I eat sugary breakfasts I fall asleep exactly 70 minutes later... and can't stay awake for anything  ) and not with a lot of eggs, since I often get sick from them. :puke: I can combine grains and milk sometimes, but often get stomach aches from that if I eat it too often.
So, with the above limitations :( can anyone give me some suggestions? I'd really, really appreciate it. And I'm not opposed to spending time making breakfast... so it doesn't necessarily have to be something that's fast. (I work at home)
Thanks again!
SagittarianTiger June 2nd, 2003, 01:00 PM Hmm.. not a lot of eggs.. no sugar (oh but cocoa puffs are sooo yummy! :D )
I'm not really sure at the moment, but what about fruits? Are those ok? I know a gal who (for either breakfast or lunch)
does cottage cheese (low fat) mixed with fruit, topped with almonds.. I've yet to MIX them together.. but maybe a variation off of that??
I'll keep thinking.. oh, and you said you get sick from grains and milk.. is it that combination or both? Because I was thinking you make whole grain muffins, and have apple/orange/ whatever juice with it?
Don't know if I was any help..
BeeLady June 2nd, 2003, 01:23 PM Fruits would be my suggestion - especially because it's summer and lots of delicious things are coming into season now. Fruit is a whole package of nice things in a readily available form. I am bad at breakfast as well, and find that fruit is a good thing to try. What about yogurt (I know it is milk, but....) with fruit? I often have yogurt with cereal but that's no good for you.
any help?

(I suspect the menstrual thread will be one that.....has a resurgence now and again..................... ;) )
Rachel June 2nd, 2003, 01:57 PM Saj - I can have grains and milk seperately, or grains with yogurt, etc, but for some reason grains and milk together (like cold or hot cereals) don't agree with me. Who knows why... Whole grain muffins sound good, I'll be on the lookout for some good recipes!
Thanks for the yogurt and fruit idea, Bees! I'll see if I can't whip up some sort of parfait with that.
Madeleine June 2nd, 2003, 02:26 PM Saj - I can have grains and milk seperately, or grains with yogurt,
Then I can wholeheartedly recommend a Swiss recipie called "Bircher Muesli" - rolled oats and other cereals, your favourite nuts and almonds, a some dried and fresh fruit, all mashed up with yoghurt.
Depending on how filling you'd like it take more or less of the nuts, or yoghurt with different fat content, and more or less fruit.
I love it with quite a bit of cereal and nuts for a filling breakfast, or almost only fruit salad with a little joghurt and cereal added as a snack. Using plain Greek sheep milk yoghurt is a nice change as well, and it might even better for you when you have a sensitivity to cows milk.
If you're really into it, grind/roll the cereals yourself the night before and use self made yoghurt. Yum! :D If you don't make your own cereal mix try some from the health food store without added sugar, artificial flavours or chocolate. Sweeten with fresh bananas, raisins or a little honey. You can also add ground vanilla and/or cinnamon.
Goodness I start drooling as I write this, LOL :P
Rachel June 2nd, 2003, 03:00 PM Oh, that sounds great, Madeleine! I do make my own yogurt, so that's a great option. Nuts, grains, and dried and fresh fruit... any particular grains you'd suggest, or only oats?
Cinnamon and vanilla sounds like a great addition to this for flavour... but ground vanilla? I guess that means I'd have to find dried vanilla beans, right, or would the extract do?
Madeleine June 2nd, 2003, 03:46 PM any particular grains you'd suggest, or only oats?
Now I hope my dictionary doesn't fail me, LOL.
I also like millet(?) flakes, they're supposed to have a lot of essential minerals. Then something my dictionary translates as "German wheat" or "spelt" ("Dinkel" in German), I don't know if that's helping, sounds like it's a local thing ... I also love bread made of that. Flax seed is great too, but only a little as it's quite oily and too much can make the Muesli taste a bit funny.
Most of the time I just get a sugar free cerial/nut mix from the health food store that contains the stuff I listed, plus almonds, hazelnut, sunflower seeds and the like.
Cinnamon and vanilla sounds like a great addition to this for flavour... but ground vanilla? I guess that means I'd have to find dried vanilla beans, right, or would the extract do?
Oh, over here you get ground vanilla as a spice - but I'm sure vanilla essence/extract works just as well. Whatever adds some nice flavour.
bunniee June 2nd, 2003, 04:20 PM psssst....don't tell anyone, but it's perfectly okay to eat non-breakfast foods in the morning. Eat whatever you like that won't put you in a sugar induced snooze fest. Or you can just eat jelly donuts until you pass out, and we'll come over and go thru your things.
How about a smoothie with yogurt, fruit, and protein powder? Frozen fruit is great in smoothies and very convenient.
Can you eat peanut butter? Peanut butter on whole grain toast is a nice breakfast, especially if you get the natural kind without added sugar.

ROFL! That's what I've been doing lately... not the jelly donuts per se, but sweeter stuff than I should be having... and yeah, it is almost like passing out!
Now, I never thought of adding protein powder to a yogurt smoothie, although I do know that protein helps slow down my reactions. Wonder why I never put 2 + 2 together? And yes, peanut butter's ok, although I confess to liking the sweetened kind more than the natural. Still, I've got a large jar of the natural, so I'd better go eat it up!
Bethany June 2nd, 2003, 05:45 PM I usually have Coke and a sugary cereal for breakfast, so no help there... :D
You can make yummy fruity drinks by taking yogurt and fruit juice and mixing them up with a blender. Would that be too sweet? Or cold pizza. Yum! Sometimes I eat leftover instant pasta for breakfast. Or those little cups of instant soup...
morguebabe June 2nd, 2003, 07:01 PM oatmeal
a bowl of fresh berries
snippet June 3rd, 2003, 02:01 AM How about sausage and biscuits? Or bacon and ham? Try a grain and a meat for a change.
Poledra June 3rd, 2003, 05:25 AM I don't really have any suggestions, but just thought that I would jump in here to say that I also can't eat cereal and milk becuase it makes me feel very sick. Just so that you don't think you're the only one, cuz I know my family all thinks I'm the strangest thing since sliced bread
Pol
Rachel June 3rd, 2003, 07:13 AM LOL, Poledra! Actually, there are a few people in my family like myself, so I'm in good company.
Rachel June 3rd, 2003, 10:34 AM Is hummus made out of chick peas? I like chick peas, but the one time I tried hummus (I think that's what it was) I didn't like it at all. Didn't taste anything like chick peas.
Did I get the wrong thing?
Rachel June 3rd, 2003, 10:38 AM Mmm... but it's sugar that causes me to go down, natural or otherwise - honey's actually 2 - 3 times sweeter than sugar. :(
rainee June 3rd, 2003, 10:47 AM I usually have yogurt or a slimfast shake (yes, I am that lazy). Fruit would be good (but I'm too lazy and cheap to buy and wash enough fruit to eat it on a daily basis, and I normally eat breakfast at work), and the other 2 options can be stored en mass in the fridge here. Cottage cheese and fruit is yummy. I sometimes get that from the student union eatery if i'm really hungry and don't have anything here. Sweet and/or overly solid things tend to upset my stomach in the morning.
BeeLady June 3rd, 2003, 12:10 PM oooh, smoothies sound so good (it's five past ten at night, but it's been so hot here...... :( ) does anyone have any good recipes? I'd love to make them, but what's the best way? could I make them with my hand blender from juice and frozen fruit? How much would be a good breakfast?
......goes off into the kitchen for another drink.......!!
terri June 4th, 2003, 06:15 AM Can you use soymilk? Its pretty palatable on cereal. Most of the refrigerator case types are pretty palatable. In the Aseptic pack I like Westsoy plus plain. You can learn to make a great white sauce with soy milk(as long as its a good one and relatively fresh) and enjoy all kinds of foods.
You may actually be a person who does better just skipping breakfast altogether, especially if you are not hungry at that time of day.
 My most radical suggestion-eat whatever you want-it doesn't have to be a "breakfast" food. I don't have any problem eating salad or stirfry for breakfast!
Enjoy!
euphrasyne June 4th, 2003, 07:22 AM Um, my favorite breakfast is chicken parmesan.

thinkfirst June 4th, 2003, 01:51 PM Here's my breakfast routine, and I love it so much that I really don't want anything else.
First, I was listening to an interesting show on herbs/bones/calcium/supplements etc. that I would recommend for everyone. I learned alot. But Susun Weed (herbalist) gave the recommendation that for better calcium and other minerals the best way to get them in an absorbable form is to drink tea every day. Put a cup of dried herbs in a quart jar then fill the rest of the jar with boilingwater. Steep it for 4-8 hours, then strain and squeeze out all the liquid and drink it with lemon, or honey, hot or cold however and whenever you like but within 2 days. Then make more. Use the single herb and just rotate the use of them during the week. Red Clover, Nettle, Oat Straw. I really have enjoyed these teas. I drink a big glass first thing in the morning.

go here and search for Susun Weed, and hopefully you will find the radio archive of the show.
Then about an hour later I blend up an overripe banana, little bit of tofu (or yogurt) & vanilla protein drink and about 10 oz water. Then I sprinkle a TBL of ground up flax seed and mix in. Its yummy and crunchie and by the time I'm done, I am full until lunch.
euphrasyne June 5th, 2003, 04:20 AM Just a little hint of catuion on tea: I love tea, it is my favorite thing in the world--but I can rarely have it.
Tea (any type from a tree, not an herb) contains tannin. The tannin is found in the tree bark the tea is made from. Tannin blocks the asorption of iron. So if you are anemic, pregnant, or have any iron problems at all--stay away from the tea; otherwise it is great.

Nitsa June 5th, 2003, 04:59 AM I just ate baby cut carrots dipped in hummus and a bannana. :D
Rachel June 5th, 2003, 12:55 PM Thanks for all the suggestions! I was away for a day or two, so didn't have a chance to reply. I actually haven't thought of using soy milk... I don't have any problems drinking milk, it's just when I mix it with grain that the troubles start. Yet I can drink 3 glasses in a row without the least effects. :D
Thanks again for all the help!
smiles June 9th, 2003, 01:18 PM i needed this thread badly enough  i am a avid breakfast eater. ...OK i admit it. i used to be..till 2 weeks back. then the blender stopped working and my breakfast suffers...so do me. i used to vitamins with my morning 'power' smoothie everyday. since no smoothie, no vitamins, then feel hugry all day because i went less on proteins... then less water... for past 2 weeks..the same thing continued, and yesterday when i combed, i see that my hair has become brittle again.  i should be ashamed.
here's how i do my usual smoothies :)
binders: any one of these - any yogurt (homemade or store bought, flavoured, plain) - 2% or less fat than that, soymilk, almond milk, milk, milk powder
fruit: any two of these - mango, apple, banana, strawberry, blueberry (the best!!!), peach, plums, etc.. strawberry banana is my fav. blueberry gives a nice taste to any smoothie combo. one more thing - i buy all fruits except banana, frozen. eliminates the need to cleanup in the morning.
power giver: protein powder. i take 'super green" from whole foods. a bit expensive, but worth till the last penny you put in it. any other whey protein powder or soy protein should be good too
sweetener: sugar, brown sugar, molasses, honey
you can also add orange juice, flax seed oil, toasted wheat germ - well, anything you fancy :D
have a happy breakfast. :D i'm going to buy a blender soon. need such a thread to remind me. need bethany's post to take vitamins... :D probably i just need to add a 'memory plus' vitamin too ;)
other good breakfasts that i enjoy: cold cereal oatmeal.
at night, mix, 3 tbsp rolled whole oats, one cup milk, 2 tbsp raisins, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1/2 tbsp honey - microwave 5-10 mins in the biggest bowl your microwave can take in, to avoid overflow. mix well. bring to room temperature and put it the fridge. you can have yummy breakfast in the morning.
you can even make a little extra for two days at a row.
