View Full Version : Heat Lamps

Does anyone else like the way their hair looks after it has been dried under a heat lamp? Maybe it's just a curly/wavy thing, but my hair really likes it. It's been so long since I sat under one though.

I have looked for a heat lamp online off and on for over a year now, they were always in the $2000 range  :!: Why on earth would they cost so much? I've even had my DH walk around Home Depot with me to see if we could cobble one together LOL.

I just found one tonite that is on sale for $340. http://info.product-finder.net/express/QL854---4-Headed-Heat-Lamp.html

That is still a little spendy for me, but it would be nice to keep it here in my office, so I could roll it up and dry my hair while I surf. :) I HATE being cold, I could bask like a lizard while my hair dried...::sigh::

mmmm, the lizard comment got me! I think I'd be a lizard in another life, because I'm so cold blooded, I need external warmth!

My hair doesn't really respond to heat though. My hair is the smoothest and softest when I dry it overnight, so I've always thought it was a cool temp that worked best.

Why do I have cold-loving hair but a heat-loving body? :)

Brrrr! I don't like being cold either! and I can just imagin how wonderful a heat lamp would feel.

do they emit uv radiation that harms the skin the way the sun does? I've always wondered about that, I think I heard that somewhere.

plant lights and grow lights, is that the same thing as a heat lamp? or is a heat lamp like the ones you find in some hotel bathrooms, the ones with the timers on them? Aaaaahhhhh! I always love when I stay at a place with one of those hot red lights!

I don't know if it would be harmful for the hair, I guess the amount of heat emitted and how close you are to the lamp..

Plant lights aren't the same as heat lights, but you could put one together at home :)

First thing you would need would be a light source of some kind. I would recomend a clip on lamp with a reflective shade, preferable with wires crossing the shade. Imagine a metal mixing bowl, with two wires bowed across the front, and where the bottom of the bowl would be is a light fixture. Attached to the bowl is a contraption making it so you can clip it onto things.

Next you will need a heat lamp bulb. It is a big, red lightbulb. Some of them are flat on top, kinda like the ones for recessed lighting. Either way, as long as it fits in your fixture your set.

A few things to watch out for are: First make sure the lamp is plugged directly into a wall plug, not a power strip or extension cord. Heat bulbs drain alot of juice! Second, after the bulb has warmed up for awhile check your distance. You don't want to burn your scalp.

We used them to keep baby chicks warm. Works well for orphaned kittens, puppies, piglets, and calves. You would probably find the best prices at feed stores, since they cater to that clientel. You can find the bits at Home Depot, but I think they would be cheaper at a feed store.

HTH a little !!

oh! I never thought about that Anne. And I worry about sun exposure too. I thought they were just like the red heat lamps in the motels too, those are so cool!

What a great idea! After I posted this last night I had a lightbulb moment  and connected Lizard and HeatLamp. I wondered if the ones sold in pet stores were the same, but a feedstore is even better for me! There are more feed and tractor supply stores around here than there are anything else LOL

They don't have UV at that level :) even the plant bulbs have a very limited UV range. UV bulbs are waaaay expensive and come with all sorts of warnings on them about the radiation.

I'm glad to hear about the feed supply stores! Pet stores would be much more expensive.

I would LOVE to own a heat lamp! I got my hair dried under one when I had my hair cut at Devachan and my curls looked so fantastic afterwards. This is what the lamp looked like: http://link.freepichosting.com/image.cgi/23299/0.jpg I'm not sure why, but I was expecting it to look different. This one's on sale at http://salonequipmentintl.com for $1720!! What a bargin, I think I might go pick up two at that price! :P

You know, Dulci that one would be a bargain if it helped keep you warm, too!! (but then you haven't experienced the Texas summers yet, to know if it would be good to have a heat lamp in August! LOL)

I think you should get it, but then it isn't my checkbook! LOL ;)

It probably is a lot gentler than a hair dryer. That is a good idea. You also might want to try a very low watt hood dryer. Tenderheaded.com has a soft bonnet Belson dryer that has 350 watts and is around $36. My hood dryer is very gentle on my hair.

I came upon this thread today, and was wondering if anyone ever found an affordable heat lamp. I am definitely someone who is thrilled how my hair comes out when having used one at a salon. You figure that in this day and age when you can find pretty much anything on the internet, that someone would have invented a small , portable , AFFORDABLE heat lamp that consumers could purchase especially since it seems to be used by more and more hair salons these days... just wondering

Hello reddhot! I am glad to hear that they are starting to use heat lamps in salons again, I haven't seen them since the late 70s!

I googled around a bit looking for heat lamps, the cheapest one I was able to find was a 3-lamp model (http://www.cachebeauty.com/wholsale/equip/heat_lamps.htm) for $319.

Arcticpixie's suggestion upthread ^^^ about buying a chick brooding lamp from the feed store sounds like a good one, they use the identical bulbs as the salon heat lamps! Here is an example of a single-bulb clip-on heat lamp (http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/product/single_bulb_brooder.html). I see you live in Texas, check out your local Tractor Supply Store (http://www.mytscstore.com/default.asp), they carry these lamps and replacement bulbs too!

Not sure what if you are talking about a special kind of heat lamp - but I know you can buy heat lamps at PetsMart for under $40. They are in the lizard section.
