It could be the shampoo/conditioner/or styling products causing it too, like an allergy. If I use hairspray of any brand,I get it and many times gel as well. Herbal Essences is very harsh,I wonder if that wouldn't make it worse? You could try mixing your fav shampoo with some brown sugar and massage your scalp, then only condition your ends(ears down)and lay off styling products for awhile and see if that doesn't help, atleast you can narrow it down to what is causing it?Even water at a new location can do it,so you might want to think about anything different you have been doing in your routine.HTH

Cherry,

I will tell you that I once had dry scalp in the winter, and I mistakened it for dandruff. I should have been hot oil treating my scalp and hair, so that is exactly what I did. But during the summer, because I condition & go, I experienced conditioner build-up. It made my scalp itch like crazy. I could not stand it!!! I bought some Zincon shampoo, and applied it directly to my scalp. I used it once a week, for three consecutive weeks. It cleansed my scalp and I was relieved. If you cannot remove the build up or if you do not find a way to clarify your scalp, try using baking soda and lemons, or you can try an ACV. If that does not work, try Zincon. It can be purchased at any drug store for appr. $8.99.

I have used Herbal essences shampoo for normal hair for one year when i
used to stay in connecticut(cold environment) and i never used conditioner
after shampoo then after coming to florida(little bit hot)i started using conditioner after shampoo, from then i am getting this problem more. When i used to stay in CT i never felt my scalp itchy and about buildup i think i didn't
observed about it.But i like using conditioner because it is making my hair
soft and managable.please tell the meanings for acv and HTH.Using brown sugar will change the colour of my hair?

HTH is hope that helps, acv is apple cider vinegar rinse and no, I don't think the brown sugar will change the color of your hair. It hasn't changed mine at all. ITs just a very gentle way to exfoliate your skin, its nice for face and body too.

LONG HAIR COMMUNITY ABBREVIATIONS

Okay,

ACV= apple cider vinegar rinse. It is used to return your hair to a safe ph. It softens hair. White vinegar can also be used.

HTH= hope that helps

There should be a listing of these terms right here on The Boards. But you will have to search for them. I will search for it, and when I find it, I will write to you so you can get more familiar.

Cherry:
Scroll down to Forum Jump and click on Discussion Forums, you may have to research for a little while, but I believe you can find information on LHC's terminology.

Sometimes in the food section you can find it at Walmart, but you can definitely find it at the grocery store. The vinegar used for hair is the same as for your salad.
I have used both the Heinz and the store brand, don't think there is much a difference because you water it down so much anyway for use.

does it itch?

So if dandruff itches, would then scalp build-up not itch?

Sometime last week, I got white bits of something or other coming off my scalp after washing that were not "flakes" per se, nor did my scalp itch. Build-up? Something else?

Hi Cherry,
you may find that even if your problem *is* dandruff, then the ACV may help it.
In simple terms, dandruff is an infection of the scalp, and as vingear is a disinfectant, it can get rid of the dandruff.

ACV and white vinegar aren't the same. In my opinion, white vinegar smells a lot more of vinegar, while ACV smells a bit sweeter. (It still smells vinegary, just not quite as strongly of vinegar)

Vinegars used for hair and cooking are exactly the same:) In walmart and most English-owned shops, it will say "apple cider vinegar" (might just be called cider vinegar) or white vinegar.
If the vinegar you have is browny-coloured, it's just regular vinegar, so you'd probably be better off going to get some more.

It is possible that one of the products you've used has caused the problem.
My DH (Dear husband) thinks that the balsam in my balsam and protien shampoo gave him bad scalp flakes, while products with silicone in have the same effect on me.

For a scalp scrub, brown sugar is best, if I'm not mistaken. Apparently it doesn't dissolve as quickly in liquid as white/light sugar, so it will scrub longer. (I've never done this, so I'm just repeating what I've read here.)

For ACV rinses, I use 1 tablespoon ACV to 1 cup water; mix together; pour over scalp. Some people use it after shampooing but before conditioning. Some people use it after conditioning. Myself, I've used it with good results before conditioning.

Good luck!

For me, I thought I had dandruff and tried to use a bunch of things to make it go away.

Then I read on this forum to use aloe vera gel. I put some on my scalp, washed it off and the flakes went away!

Well, the aloe vera gel, I get mine at Walmart, I get the Fruit of the Earth Brand because it is pure 100% aloe, no chemicals, colors or fragrances. The brown sugar, I don't think it matters whether it is light or dark,as long as its the baking kind and not the "sugar in the raw" brand. That stuff is more like pebbles, afraid it might be too much for the hair. I use mine as a mix with my shampoo, and then i rinse it out,and then condition only my ends,my scalp doesnt like conditioner so I don't really know whether you would want to condition again. Maybe someone who CO's can answer that for you.HTH(hope that helps)

Hi Cherry,

I think I can only help with the brown sugar question: use the dark brown sugar that you see in the stores, BUT check the ingredients to make sure it says "all natural brown sugar" or something like that. There are cheap immitation brown sugars made that are just white sugar with molasses. You DON'T want this (but it sounds like this isn't available where you are anyway, so I don't think you have to worry about it.) I don't remember the brand names of any good brown sugar because I don't buy it anymore! Plus, I'm not sure if the brand names where I am would be the same as the brand names where you are. Just look for all-natural dark brown sugar. For information on how to use it once you've got it, you can find recipes in the Recipes section of the forums. Look for "Brown Sugar Scrubs".

With aloe vera gel, you should be able to find it in a store where they sell things like bandages or ointments for cuts and scratches. It's a clear jelly-like liquid that comes from the inside of an aloe vera plant. It's very good for treating minor burns; it's also very good for moisturizing hair and skin.

Hope that helps!
