View Full Version : GM question about left and right side parts

I read what Nitsa wrote in the thread "What about longer parts showing" below.

I have one if I part my hair on the right hand side. I thought that was the side that I was to part my hair but when I went to the GM salon he told me that my crown is on the right so I should part my hair on the left if I don't want that to happen. I don't like to though because to part my hair on the left feels weird.
Funny thing is I was asking Martine how she gets her swoosh and I found out by accident that if I part my hair on the left I can get one.

This is what I've been thinking about. If follicles grow from left to right on most people (and should thus be parted on the right to do those 'sit ups' that GM talks about), can it grow from right to left on others?

I've been thinking about this because I used to suspect that my hair might grow from right to left, instead of the GM way of left to right. I have an easier time to part my hair on the right than I have to part on the left. (But on the other hand I don't get a Martine swoosh if I part it on the left)

What do you think? Is there anyone here who have discussed it with their GM-stylist? (Or who'd like to discuss it with a GM-stylist when you have chance?) :)

I'm just interesting in knowing how to know which direction your follicles grow. What are the signs?

I'm the one with the extended part
problem that had me so down
last week....I'd love to know what
GM says about all this.....

If I look at this weird part thing on me,
my hair is doing somewhat left to right
although, it also seems like a
continental divide! :( UGH

Anyhow, thanks for posting, I'd LOVE
to know what they say! :)

In that it sort of changed direction halfway back, I think that was it. But at the mo it really wants to be a middle parting for some strange reason.

I've been wondering about this, too, Feye! Although I normally don't wear a part with my braid, and when I wear my hair down I tend to let it part where it wants to, which is closer to the middle, when I was younger my hair naturally parted on the right. But, it is flat that way. When I part it on the left, that's the only way it does "push-ups." I think this may have to do with the cowlicks I have and, possibly, the fact that I am left-handed. Sometimes I think the GM method was designed for Caucasian women in the sixties and seventies, when straight hair was all the rage, who were right handed and had no cowlicks. I could be wrong, of course, but that's the way it seems. The "one size fits all" for products, treatment, and styling (including parts) just seems a little strange to me. (Please don't take offense to this, anyone, as I know the GM system works beautifully for many of us!!)

Longred - I just thought of this. You had your hair thermally reconditioned right? Could it be the growing in curl that is causing the direction. You can see parts in straight hair much more easily and curl would give it a direction ... just thinking ...g

That's an interesting question, I never thought of that before.

How many here wear a side part?

I have an appointment to get
the thermal treatment done

my natural hair doing all
this! :(

Ah - I'll be curious to see if it still does it after the termal :?:

I just noticed something on my growing out bits and pieces today that might apply. At diff lengths it parts and flips in diff directions literally changing within a week.

Anyway - wishing you happy hair thoughts ... :DD ...g

This is an exact phrase from an old magazine article featuring George Michael which explains his exact reasons behind the right-side part:

"Mr. Michael always parts the hair on the right, following the crest of the head, for these reasons:

Hair usually grows from left to right, and parting the hair against its growth exercises the roots.

Most people sleep on their right sides, causing greater perspiration and shedding on that side of the head. A right-side part eliminates some of that.

Finally, the longer the hair the stronger the root, so the abused right side hair should be longer."

So apparently even when he was trimming the hair he parted it on the right side first and THAT side of the hair ended up being LONGER than the other...

Interesting theories !?

Brian :)

Wouldn't it stand to reason as right or left-handedness affects so much in the body that it would also affect the way that hair grows?

Great question, I made a poll about it!

That's interesting. I know I sleep on my right side, and that my hair is thinner there. Great point!

Finally, the longer the hair the stronger the root, so the abused right side hair should be longer."

That I don't really understand. If he combs the hair in a right side part before he trims it, then the hair on the left side turns out longer, doesn't it? Or maybe I'm missing something. If GM trims the hair on the right side longer than on the left side, then the hair turns out uneven, right? Or maybe it doesn't... He's the hair trimming expert, for sure. :)

That's exactly my thoughts, too. Given that the majority of people are right-handed, it seems the GM system was designed for the majority, whose hair grows in a certain direction. But with us lefties, our hair may very well grow in the opposite direction, so it makes sense that we should part it on the left.
