View Full Version : My wacky method of hair measurment... (neat!)

I measured my hair the way most of you measure it this weekedn (from the hairline) and it came out to 15 1/2" each time. THEN I tried it the way I usually do it (from the root down) it came out 10 1/2" every time. So that means that -5.0" is the acutal length of my hair. I found out that I do like measuring from my hair line (because for me that's a whole lot easeir) but my hair is 10 1/2" not 15 1/2" the extra 5" is just from measuring my head, lol! :D

I have a small head.. so I don't think subtracting 5" for everyone will give the same results..

I will continue measuring from my hair line but I'll always subtract the 5" from it. Not to confuse anyone.

My hair is just brushing my shoulders now.

Your hair is growing fast! I read your journal, those vits must be doing their job, not to mention your routine.

Thanks for taking the time and measuring both ways, it's interesting to know. I'm all for whatever is easier and is still accurate to some degree. Then again, I betcha not many non-LHCers would know their hair length!

I don't think it has anything to do with having a small head. I remember you said you wore kids caps. I get the same 5" difference and I have a large head. Most headbands are too small for me and I remember a couple years ago those wool tams were popular. I bought one from Target and had to return it because I could tell it was going to give me a headache from being so tight.

I think the hairline back is just a good way to start the tape at a constant point and be able to see your growth. No, our measurements aren't the length of the actual hairs but but a record of progress. Just do it the same way every time and you should be just fine.

Not confusing at all. I think I'll keep measuring my head though, lol, I like the illusion of extra length.

Now if I had hair down to my knees I'm sure I would feel differently :P

You get the same 5" difference? I wonder if that goes for everyone.. maybe it's more that I have a small face than a small head.. or maybe the length of my head.. I don't know. :)

Yes my hair does grow fast, but it's nearing the end of the month (then again this is a very short month) so it's not going to be as quick as it was last month. :/

I think I need to change something in my signature already... or maybe I just won't measure for about 5 months or so... That way I can be really surprised if I gained some mega growth. :)

It's weird how I gained so much length in 4 months. I gained 4.5" in 4 months.. it really must have been my protein intake of 40-65grams of protein a day (although I watch it, like I'll take a shake every other day just to not overload my body with whatever else is in that drink with it, like selenium) and instead of taking the shake I'll eat meats with high protein, or drink milk. The whole way I didn't stop taking supplments, but there have been one or two days where I forgot them, or really had no time.

I just remember them first cutting my hair to my chin in the chair and chopping up to my ears... now it's already below my chin!

I've often thought that the way we measure hair here is a bit odd, as it includes the head as well. I find it hard enough to get measured this way though.........now that my hair is inching (well, half inching) it's way ever downwards. I'm glad you are happy with your hair growth though, it's always encouraging. Treat it well now and it will love you later. Hmmm.. if I can find a satisfactory way to drop a tape from my parting/crown I will compare notes with you. As it is, measuring is a two person job for me.

My hair is all one length (mostly.) This means the ENDS are all at the same place. That means that The hairs on my hairline are longer than the hairs at the nape of my neck.

My hair is 27 inches, I measured a hairline hair, and it was: 27 inches.
Measuring from the nape of my neck (shortest hairs) I get 17 inches. A 10 inch difference. I guess we now know who has the big head.

So I have 27 inch hairs and 17 inch hairs. This averages out to 22 inch hairs.

But I'd rather count those 27 inch hairs at the front of my head!

Kitty Brite, I still don't understand WHERE you start your measuring. At the nape of your neck? Middle of your crown? I just can't figure it out . . . can you help! ;) lol

<just call me a silly ol Bear>! ;)

AND . . . I just wanted to add (to no one in particular) that the one reason *I* measure from the forehead back is because the line at my forehead never changes (unless there is a receeding hairline that I don't know much about! ;) ) It is consistent.

Anyway!

Thanks, KB! :)

All this has me wondering if I've been measuring my hair 'wrong' for the past few months. (I.E., ever since I started measuring it.) I'd been holding the top of the measuring tape at my natural part (it's a center part), then running the tape down while pulling hair straight until I found the end of the hair.

I was wondering why other people with BS-length hair were coming up with much higher numbers than I had -- I guess this might explain that? 'Cause, I mean, I know I'm short waisted, but not /that/ short waisted. ;)

I think you are doing it right and the differences have to do more with our body type and height. My daughter's BS length is different than mine. I know I'm long waisted, so getting to waist length at 35" could possibly be tailbone for others.

Hmmm... Okay, I hadn't realized how much variation there can be in the way body length is spread out. I'm tall enough (5'9") that mine don't match up with most anyone I know.

I feel silly now. ;)

Hmm... it sounds like you're doing it wrong. Do you place the tape measurer at your front hairline? Or somewhere in the middle of the crown?

Here are instructions (and a great hair care page, I might add):

Don't feel silly, I never really thought about it until I saw the monthly measurements and noticed the variations of the BS lengths, the waist lengths, and so on. I'm also 5'9", there are a bunch of tall people here, some taller than us!

Your hair sounds like it is growing fast. You are lucky. My hair grows rather slow.
