View Full Version : length of hair for hairsticks
Lady_Evalyn August 5th, 2005, 05:26 AM Hello,
I was just wondering what length your hair was when you were able to use hairsticks? I've never tried them, but I'd like to have an idea before I order some. My hair is about 2 or 3 inches below my shoulders. I can get it into a bun and use a few bobby pins to make it stay up. The bun is rather small, so would hairsticks look funny in it?
Thanks in advance!
zaftig2k August 5th, 2005, 05:33 AM As long as you can get it into a bun with some pins, then it is time to start playing with hairsticks, forks and the like. You will want to start with shorter sticks, 4-5 inches, so that they do not overwhelm the hair. But yes, give it a try, and see how they work for you. Be sure to share some pics!
trollkjerring August 5th, 2005, 05:33 AM When I found this place I had 24" and I ordered some hairsticks immediatly (never saw hairsticks before here in Germany) and I could use them easy. My bun is tiny but I don't care and I like the look of hairsticks (and Ficcares)

Misti August 5th, 2005, 05:33 AM My hair is very thin and fine and I wasn't able to get hair sticks to work until it was waist length ... but my hair also got coarser and greyer in that time, so I don't know if that made a difefrence. (I was also not able to get barettes to stay in my hair, so it wasn't just hair sticks.)
But that's just one data point.
If anyone else had better luck with shorter hair than i did, I'm sure they'll speak up soon. ;)

I definately want to try them soon. I might have to use a couple bobby pins to help it stay at first, but that's fine with me.
What kind of hair stick would you suggest for a first-timer besides being short? I want to find something that's fairly cheap and won't be much of a loss to me if I lose it. I'm always losing things...
Would i be better off trying something like this?

curls2grow August 5th, 2005, 02:08 PM My hair is about 21" long now, which hits just below shoulders on me. It's also thin and on the fine side. I have found that 4-5" sticks work best for me, and I still have about 1" sticking out on each side.
When I first thought I had enough hair to make a bun, I bought a pair of cheap plastic hairsticks at WalMart so that I could experiment with getting them in, getting them to stay, and what length they should be. I had my husband mark where about 1-2" extra on each side of my bun would be, then I measured the length of the stick between the 2 marks. And 5" was the max that could look good in my regular cinnamon bun -- I could go to 6" eventually when I can do a figure 8, because of it's longer length. The sticks that I got at WalMart were 7" long; they served their purpose even though I won't wear them again (they also had seams, but for just trying a few times carefully, it was still okay for me).
Dahabibi August 5th, 2005, 03:08 PM My hair is bs length, but it's fairly thin so I don't have much of a bun, either. I can use short sticks (spikes, actually), but I think that the really long sticks would look silly in my hair, too overwhelming for the bun.
Fox August 5th, 2005, 09:07 PM My sister-in-law loved my hair sticks, but her hair was still to short to get into a bun. I made her a stick anyway and told her I would show her how to use it. We basically had to put her hair up in a twist leaving the ends up, then used a claw clip to hold it. The ends fell over the claw clip and hid it. We took the hairstick and slide it in at an angle, going through the teeth of the claw. It was purely decorative at that point, but it looked great and she had such fun wearing it.
Like Sandie said, you'd probably like a shorter stick. You can come visit my place if you'd like. I have sticks in varying prices. If you don't see something you like or can afford, just email me. (There is a contact page on the website) I can usually make something up to fit anyone's style or budget.

icydove August 6th, 2005, 03:22 AM If you can bun it, you can stick it.
I was trying to get hair sticks in my niece's hair, which isn't hardly to her shoulders. It was ALMOST possible...I'd say at shoulder length I could do it.
To play around with, Wal-Mart has a few plastic sticks and those hair accessory places at the mall (like Claire's, Icing) have a more varied selection. However, I'm guessing what would be best for your hair is something with a very thin stick, like a Quattro steel stick or a Mei Fa. I know there is someone who makes a stainless steel stick for fairly cheap. Ah, here it is http://www.vkdesignsandfindings.com/. I've seen them mentioned here on the board.
Daneille August 6th, 2005, 04:23 AM When my hair was about your length I could do a half up bun held with hairsticks. It worked very well.

SunCat August 6th, 2005, 07:57 AM If you can get your hair in a bun you can use hair sticks, hair forks should work for you also. You can get shorter sticks 4" so they don't overwhelm your bun. I prefer the shorter sticks myself as I don't like a lot of the hair stick sticking out. I usually get 4" - 5" sticks. There are several LHC members that sell hair sticks.
MemSahib August 6th, 2005, 12:19 PM If you're just planning to decorate your hair with sticks, you can use anything you want. If you want to hold your hair up, the silkiness of it is another factor besides just the length. Mine is much longer than many of the respondees in this thread, but a GM hairdresser could not make my hair stay up in sticks when it was only about 1½" shorter than now. It's so silky it falls right out of sticks.
allege August 6th, 2005, 03:39 PM Well its been a long time sense my hair was any where near my shoulders, but my nieces hair was shoulder lenght and very thin/silky when I started using sticks in her hair. I always had to use a bit of hairspray or product to get a "grip" for the sticks.
vanessie August 6th, 2005, 05:01 PM Heres a question in reverse for you guys~
How long does my hairstick have to be for my hair?
Im sooooooo about to order a set, and they come in different sizes- My hair is BSL. Should I opt for a 5 or 6 inch? Ive never shopped around for this kind of thing before ...
Lady_Evalyn August 6th, 2005, 05:17 PM Hey,
Thank you for all the help! Everyone on TLHC is so helpful and I really appreciate it.
I'll be looking at those sites some of you posted and hopefully finding something I'd like to order sometime soon.
Marie99 August 6th, 2005, 05:42 PM To find out how long sticks should be, experiment with disposable chopsticks or pencils or cuticle sticks, whtever you have at home.
For along time I had to use a ponyo when I used hairsticks but I got better at it and now I don't have to.

I have lots of cuticle sticks! I'll try those tomorrow.
