Hi lisa! My current cleansing oil recipe (which evolved from the old LHL's Cricketsong's 50/50 EVOO/Castor Oil blend) is:

2 oz. castor oil
1-1/2 oz. jojoba oil
1/2 oz. shea butter
40 drops sandalwood eo
20 drops patchouli eo
10 drops palmarosa eo

When I do a sugar scrub I simply add some of this blend to a small amount of brown sugar to make a paste (so far, I've only used this on my face, I would obviously use a larger amount if I were to try it as a body scrub ;-) ). I've tried table sugar, table salt, and kosher salt, but like the brown sugar best. The granules don't melt right away and they are small enough that they don't irritate my skin.

Whether I'm using just the oil or the oil and sugar I massage it onto my skin and then remove it with a steamy washcloth. I do the sugar scrub once or twice a week.

Oh my goodness! After reading all these posts about sugar scrub recipes, I tried one this weekend: white sugar, sunflower and grapeseed oil, with some rose fragrance oil. It was divine! My skin was so smooth and slinky and I smelled like roses all day...thanks everyone!

For Mother's Day I got two sugar scrubs from Bath and Body Works.... one is Orange and Ginger and the other is Lavendar. Both smell wonderful, I tried the Orange and Ginger and love it.

I don't have actual measurements.... just like my cooking, I "eyeball" everything.

I pour table sugar into a large bowl and add EVOO.... stir (a fork helps here) and add more oil as required to make it all "coated" and yellow, put into a plastic tub and put on a lid. I keep it in my bedroom (since it could go "bad" sitting in a humid environment like a bathroom). To use, I spoon out a bunch into a small plastic tub and add some EO's (lavender, rosewood... whatever else I'm in the mood for) and scrub away!

As Tresses said, the sugar will "melt" as you use it. I've been wanting to switch to organic cane sugar for a while and will do when I can find it in bulk at a good price.

Oh, also.....how good is this for someone who has very senistive skin? My aunt (who I am trying to whip up a basket of "Amazon made" goodies, has had ulcerations a couple of times on her legs. She knows enough not to put anything on her skin if she has something going on at the moment on her legs, but would something like this be alright to use....gingerly of course.

There are 2 reasons to use sugar over salt.... first is that *I* find the sugar to much gentler and if you have a tiny cut, the salt will make it "ouchy" hehehehe

Second is for it's AHA effect. The lovely "Elle" wrote a great article about AHAs - for sugar it's glycolic acid. So you're getting a light "chemical peel" as well as the mechanical one.

I'm sure you could other oils or a mix like Tresses... I use the EVOO since I think it's thicker texture keeps the scrub from being too hard.

For someone with sensitive skin, and oh what a sweet niece you are ;) I would be a lot heavier on the oils just to make it softer. But like I said before, the sugar starts melting.

for sensitive skin, brown sugar with a rich oil like avocado might be a good idea. tea tree oil a few drops may be... maybe adding powdered milk or goat milk might be more softer and give a creamier scrub.

i'll check my book and tell ya tomorrow about oils for sensitive skin.

thanks sheba. i usually make salt scrubs and store in my shower caddy. and apply directly from tub with wet fingers. GOSH! should remember to take it atleast with a spoon. and also mix in small batches so its over quickly. for sugar scrubs, i mix them on the go. guess i'll mix a small batch and leave i ont he shower caddy as well.

do you use powdered sugar or granules?

I use granular sugar. Oh, I'd be interested to know about the powdered milk idea.... please post your findings!

i use the same too.

powdered milk has worked well for me in my after shave scrubs. and milk has AHA too.

my 'ouchless-after-shave-scrub' concoction : brown sugar + evoo/veg oil + honey (it also makes sugar take time to dissolve) + powdered milk + rosepetal powder.

i shave, scrub, leave it for a while, then wash it off - this exfoliates well, leaves my skin baby soft and wonderful smelling all day. 1 part sugar to half part milk works well for me. you can increase sugar for more grainy scrub and for more creamy scrub, add milk.

sensitive skin-ners, dont scrub after shave pls. OUCH!!!
