View Full Version : Anyone use non human conditioner? (dog conditioner)
Scorpeo May 8th, 2003, 08:29 PM I see lots of people using the more expensive shampoo's and conditioners rather than cheaper ones ... but do any of you use animal conditioners or shampoo's?
I have when I ran out of my own, and I've found one that I really like. I only use the conditioner, as the shampoo just was okay for that one time. I used Absolutely Natural conditioner (http://www.absolutelynatural.com/). The ingredients are: pure silk protein, wheat protein, wheat oligosaccharides, soluable keratin, filtered deionized water and blended enzymes. I have a few mixing bottles that I use for the dogs shampoo, so I took one for myself. I use it at 10:1 dilution, and use about 1/5 of the of the bottle. I pour it over my head, and comb thru, then let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse out. It gives my hair the best shine, and feeling. Its not super slick, infact, when I first used it, I didn't like the feeling of it when it was wet. When it dried however, I was hooked. I guess I've gotten used to the way it feels.
Any way, I also wanted to ask, how often can I use this? Is this like the protein conditioners that will make your hair brittle if used too often? I've used a 12 oz bottle (took about a month) with no deterimental effects. I have since purchased the gallon and I use it both on myself, and my dog.
Thanks for any help or comments.

Madeleine May 10th, 2003, 12:58 PM Hi Lisa,
I haven't used this conditioner, but if it works for you, why not! I bought the MSM that I take from a vet supply (it's a supplement for horses), and a while ago everyone here was raving about the MegaTek conditioner which was originally made for horses, too.
Maybe your hair likes a lot of protein and you can use this dog conditioner on a regular basis - just watch closely for any buildup (dryness, brittlenes or breakage). I know I personally can't use much protein, so it would work as a once a month deep treatment for me at the most.
To be on the safe side you could alternate with a non-protein moisturizing conditioner.
bunniee May 10th, 2003, 02:52 PM The conditioner sounds really nice, and the ingredients look fine for human use. I use Eqyss Mega-Tek (http://www.eqyss.com/human_benefits.html) on my hair 2-3 a week. It's an equestrian product, but good for people too!

Scorpeo May 10th, 2003, 04:37 PM I've used the Mega-Tek before as well. It's nice, but only before shampooing. It's strong for my hair ... mine is kind of fine, and it weighs it down if I don't shampoo afterwards.
Don't know if my hair like protein that much, but since I dilute it pretty well, it doesn't seem to give me much buildup. I plan on using it either every other shampoo, or once a week. Anyway, the ingredients look good to me and seem to like my hair.
gabiwags May 10th, 2003, 05:17 PM Oh yes! I do this sort of thing all the time and vice versa :D the only thing you don't want to do is use people shampoo on your dog - their skin is too delicate for most human stuff ...g

It depends, dogs can vary just like people, and some can tolerate more than others. I work at a grooming shop, and duck poop is a VERY popular shampoo/cologne for many of our canine clients (its the owners that don't fully appreciate the aroma). LOL, that said, we use the appropriate shampoo.
Did you know that Desitin (diaper stuff) is REALLY hard to remove from fur?

Ok, my dog used to be a poop magnet, so I understand that.... but how on earth would a dog get the Desitin in their fur?
chamogirl May 11th, 2003, 01:33 PM My redheaded son uses Red Dog shampoo by Veterinary Formula( he has dry skin and hair) and sometimes I do too. It doesn't strip hair although some of the ingredients sound harsh. Nice aroma too. I get it online from Petco.

Oh Yucky  how fun  . Yes I can see that certain circumstances call for more drastic measures :DD ...g
tamuller May 12th, 2003, 06:13 AM LOL @ duck poop. My roommate's dog isn't only a magnet for poop, she's a walking poop machine herself!
Scorpeo, what kind of hair do you have?

LOL, apparently the daughter thought it might be fun. It was a jack russel terrier, and we tried just about everything. We ended up shaving it off. After that, the mom kinda got into the haircuts, and we did mohawks on the dog :D
I had fun today ... I gave my dog her first full body haircut. She is a chow/lab mix, and I just usually trim her pads and feet, and tidy up her haunches and belly line, but since she gets so hot, I did an all over cut that left her hair about 2" long all over. She kinda looks like a teddy bear now, nice plush fur (albeit a larger teddy bear, she weighed 76 lbs last monday :P ). I had fun with the clippers. And yes, I had my hair in a bun ... just in case.

LOL @ poop machine.
Umm, my hair is kinda fine, brown, and about 3 inches from classic length. If you look for the thread titled something like "welcome to scorpeo", you can see a pic that I posted.
LadyV May 27th, 2003, 03:53 PM I have! I 'm a prfessional groomer and I have used doggie conditioners with great results.
gabiwags May 27th, 2003, 05:19 PM Lady V - so good to see you here - don't be such a stranger OK ...g
