View Full Version : giovanni vs. beauty without cruelty
apelila May 7th, 2003, 03:32 PM hey everybody!
has anyone tried both of the leave-ins from these two brands?? I've been using the giovanni direct leave-in for about six months now, but I'm intrested in trying the BWC leave-in. The problem is I can only find the BWC online, and I'll have to buy at least two to make the price worth it, (shipping costs more then the product!) I don't want to spend the money if it's not worth it y'know. :)
So what do you recommend, stay with giovanni or shell out the money for the BWC :?:
thanks!!!!
apelila May 8th, 2003, 01:14 PM or has anyone just tried the beauty without cruelty?
dancingbarefoot May 8th, 2003, 08:40 PM I've never tried Beauty Without Cruelty products (indeed, I've never even seen them!), but I'm also interested in reviews.
Along these lines, is Kiss My Face a good line? I'm interested in cruelty-free products, but there are so many to choose from. (That's a good thing! :) )
Dulci May 9th, 2003, 05:16 AM I ordered the BWC Leave-In from vitiminlife.com, I tried it for the first time yesterday. It is a thick, white lotion consistency, and smells herby but didn't seem to leave a scent in my hair. I used about a nickel-sized dollop, I think I'll like it, my hair doesn't feel wierd today. :P
Giggy2 March 7th, 2004, 07:36 AM Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I absolutely love the BWC Revitalize Leave-in Conditioner. It has a pleasant soft scent. I use it everyday. It's kindof like a lotion but for my hair. Instant softness, the ends are suddenly "revitalized" just like it says. No heavy weighed down feeling and no oily residue.
Since I'm not good with ingredient labels could someone please tell me if this stuff could build-up or cause damage to my fragile former color treated ends?
Ingredients: Botanical extracts of rosemary, sage, horsetail, nettle, birch leaf and yarrow, cetyl alcohol (from coconut), panthenol(pro-vitamin B-5), jojoba oil, biotin (vitamin B factor), allantoin (from comfrey), aromatherapy essential oils of ylang ylang, rosewood and lavendar, citric acid (from citrus fruit), lecithin, soy protein, methyl/propylparaben.
This stuff has earned the "WOW" factor on my list. I hope it wont cause any damage because it's a keeper for me.
I appreciate any and all help! Thanks.
Dulci March 7th, 2004, 07:52 AM Wow this is an old thread! I posted in this thread months ago about the first time I used BWC, and I haven't stopped since then. I recently got two more bottles in the mail, because it is a keeper for me too, I love it. :bluebiggr
I use it only on the days I do a total wetdown though, not everyday. I distribute about a fat quarter-sized blob through drippy wet hair and then braid. I think it makes my hair very shiny too, have you noticed any shine?
I get build-up occasionally, about every 4-6 weeks I guess, I do a baking soda rinse and that takes care of that.
I bought a bottle of the Giovanni Direct a few weeks ago, to compare to BWC. If I like the Giovanni Direct I can pick it up in Whole Foods and won't have to pay shipping for the BWC. I've only used the Giovanni Direct once, I liked the smell (very...fresh), but haven't formed an opinion yet. It will be tough to better the BWC I think.
Giggy2 March 7th, 2004, 10:44 AM Dulci, I must say you have lovely hair. Such wonderful curl to it. You must be very proud :) My hair is no where near as long as yours, wow, I can't even imagine such lovely locks. :coolblue:
I notice an overall change with mine when I put the cream on. Incredible softness and shine. I see such a marked improvment I can go from bad hair day to good hair day in a matter of minutes. I've never had such good results from any product
Is there a reason why you feel it should not be used everyday? I apply it directly to my dry hair. About a quarter size blob and rub it through my hands as I would a lotion, then smooth it over my hair. I also do baking soda rinses and love them and if you feel BWC can cause a build-up, I'll be sure to do the rinse every 4-6 weeks.
My DD and I use the Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo and Smooth as silk Conditioner. Never tried the direct leave in and will make a trip back to VitaSmart to see if they have it. Ahhh what's another product in the bathroom ey.
Kat March 7th, 2004, 06:51 PM What's the URL for BWC?
Dulci March 7th, 2004, 07:24 PM What's the URL for BWC?
You know what, I don't even think they have a website! You can read all about the product at MotherNature.com (http://www.mothernature.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/88062), but you can buy it cheaper at places like vitaminlife.com or myvitanet.com.
Giggy, thank you for the compliment, you're making me blush! But I would trade you in a flash, I've always loved straight hair ::sigh::.
I don't use it everyday because when I take my braid out in the morning, it is still soft and shiny and relatively tangle-free. I just kindof smooth my hair out and braid it back up again. But if your hair likes it everyday, I would go ahead and give it everyday. And about the build-up, I don't use shampoo, so I figure anything I use is going to build up eventually. I "wash" every 4-7 days or so with White Rain Extra Body conditioner, rinse it all out and apply the BWC. I don't schedule the clarifying treatment, I wait till my ends get more tangly than usual then I clarify with a baking soda rinse.
I think Jennifer Eve (Lady Godiva) has used this product for a long time too.
GoldLady March 8th, 2004, 05:47 AM I've been using the BWC leave-in since Dulci recommended it months
ago. I love it. I don't use it directly though, I put a small dollop in a
8 oz spray bottle and mix well with distilled water. I use it only on wash
days (every other day) and use a hydrosol/distilled water mixture on
non-wash days.
Kat March 8th, 2004, 11:17 AM I found that I can get it on hairboutique, but I'm going to shop around too...I'll be needing new conditioner soon but since I go through it so fast, I sort of hate to pay a lot for it....but since it got glowing reviews, I'll have to try it!!
RedButterfly March 8th, 2004, 11:46 AM I've used both the Beauty Without Cruelty and Giovanni Leave-in Conditioners. They are both excellent to keep hair moisturized and prevent tangles.
I wash my hair once a week. I only use leave-in conditioner on wash day as an extra conditioner and to seal moisture in my hair. On non-wash days, I usually lightly oil the length and ends at night. Sometimes, I will lightly mist my hair with distilled water and apply a little more leave-in conditioner. It depends on my hair's needs.
Giovanni versus Beauty Without Cruelty? I'm still not sure which one is better. (I just rotate them in my routine depending on my mood.) However, I might reach for the Giovanni when my hair feels especially dry. The Giovanni may be slightly more moisturizing. I will continue to test them out and let you know.
Giggy2 March 10th, 2004, 10:32 AM Whew, I made it back after having the flu for a couple of days. I'm finally feeling up to reading and writing again.
Thanks to all of you for the replies. I'm definitely going to buy the Giovanni Leave-in as soon as I get back on the road. After coloring for as long as I have in the past I could use all the moisture I can get to help encourage elasticity and slip vs. dry and breaking.
I wash everyother day. I see now how the B&C could weigh down hair if used too often. But then again I'm sure all products are like that to an extent. I definitely feel as though my hair is more moisturized with the product rather than without. My fly aways on wash day aren't nearly as bad either.
AmandaPanda March 10th, 2004, 12:08 PM Question...
Do the BWC products contain cones?
Ah, nevermind- they don't :)
Might try the leave-in!
Teacherbear March 28th, 2004, 07:50 AM I haven't read all of the posts, but I can now add my :twocents: because I have used both products now! I've been using Giovani's Direct Leave in for a few years, but I finally tried BWC Leave in (thanks Dulci).
I like them both. I would buy BWC if I didn't have to go via the internet. They work about the same on my hair, except Giovanni gives me a little more slip.
I've only used BWC once and I might have used too much. It "lathered" a little as I was combing my hair.
I really like both of these products. I give them
pgw March 29th, 2004, 05:27 AM Throwing my :twocents: in as well.
I ordered both a couple of weeks ago and have been comparing the two. For *me* I like the BWC better. I get excellent slip and really soft moisturized feeling ends. No coated feeling at all.
With the Giovani I got excellent slip but my ends felt a *little* coated and a tiny bit stiff.
Ok, like I said, that's just my :twocents:. :)

Where did you get the BWC? Did you have to order it online? I wonder if vitaminlife.com has it.....
I've tried the Giovanni- it always made my hair a tiny bit tangly... no slip for me! But it was good at moisturizing.
pgw March 29th, 2004, 10:22 AM Hey Valerie.
Yeah, I ordered mine through vitaminlife. If you want to try a sample just let me know and I'll send you some.
Pixna March 29th, 2004, 12:41 PM I have not used BWC, but I love Giovanni. I'm with TBear!

Hehe! Thanks for the offer. :smooch: I'll spare you though- there are some things I've been meaning to order from vitaminlife.com for a while now anyways.
Goodie- *more* products... heh... ;)
pgw March 31st, 2004, 07:08 AM I've never tried Beauty Without Cruelty products (indeed, I've never even seen them!), but I'm also interested in reviews.

I just realized you didn't get a reply to your question about the Kiss My Face line.
Conditioned Response conditioner is the only hair product of theirs I have used. I really like it alot and have bought it several times. Makes my hair really soft, easy to detangle and doesn't weigh it down. The only thing I don't like about it is it has a mint scent. This might be a plus for those liking mint but I'm not too fond of walking around with mint scented hair. I over look the smell because I like what it does for my hair.
Others have said they really like the Miss Treated Shampoo. I'ts supposed to be very gentle.
I've also used their Pure Olive oil bar soap and the Pure Olive oil with honey soap. Huge bars and cheap. They don't smell all that great, but are creamy and gentle. I had to cut mine in three pieces because it was too large for my hand.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe someone else will drop in to give you more reviews.
:flower:
wildmane March 31st, 2004, 10:18 AM pgw,
Are the Kiss my face, olive oil bars for the body for hair? I have always wanted to try those and now since u said there r not that pricey.
pgw March 31st, 2004, 10:27 AM Oh, I'm sorry I didn't make that clear. The olive bars are for your skin. I dunno if you should use them on hair or not. You might check the ingredients to see.

I like the Kiss My Face soaps for washing my face and body. I usually get the small bar of soap because the larger size is hard to handle.
The only thing I don't like about KMF soap is that it stings like crazy if you get suds in your eyes, worse than any other soap I've tried.
CurlyKitten April 16th, 2005, 02:40 PM Does anyone have anything else to add on the differences between the Beauty Without Cruelty vs. Giovanni Direct leave-ins? Since BWC has changed their formula, I am thinking of giving the Giovanni a try and would appreciate any feedback :flower:
theotherme April 16th, 2005, 07:51 PM I bought some sample sizes of Giovanni...the 50/50 balancing 'poo, silk conditioner and the direct leave-in. I love LOVE the direct leave-in. In conjunction with those other products I have minimal to no frizz, which is a constant problem with my wavy hair and it's not gunky and it actually leaves my hair a bit shiny. I have to get a larger bottle because the travel size is not going to cut it now! lol
Tree April 16th, 2005, 11:29 PM I've tried both, but not the new formulation of BWC yet, only the old one. The bottle lasts me forever. Personally I like the BWC better. The Giovanni is good, but I definitely feel it is a bit heavier and more moisturizing. The BWC is the lightest leave-in I've found yet, and for my hair that is fantastic. I may have to give the Giovanni another shot by mixing it with either water or some aloe gel.
Jennifer April 17th, 2005, 02:29 AM I like both, though I use BWC far more often. Giovanni seems to be a little thicker and richer, it almost feels like I use to much sometimes or my hair is slightly coated, though when it dries it feels fine. :ponder: I really love either one though and would buy and use them again. I just seem to prefer BWC most days.
Carolyn April 17th, 2005, 06:36 AM I've tried both and think they are just about the same. I should part in the center and try one on each side. They don't coat my hair as much as some leave-ins but they do dull the shine somewhat. I find they both work better for me if I use about a pea sized amount of the conditoner and add a drop of jojoba and a drop of Biosilk. When I add the Biosilk I get more shine. As with any leave-in I get lots of hair lint.
dancingbarefoot April 17th, 2005, 10:58 AM Well, I'm now an avid BWC fan, but it's hard to find in Texas. I can't bring myself to order S&C online, since the postage would be extra, but I stock up when I'm home in Alaska. The baggage screeners probably think it's funny that I have 3 or more bottles of conditioner in my suitcase each time I fly.
Just started using Giovanni shampoo - TBear talked me into it at the last TX meet in Austin. It smells really good, and I like it so far. Good stuff!
RedButterfly April 18th, 2005, 09:06 PM My current thoughts on the two -
I still prefer Giovanni Direct Leave-in. It is more moisturizing. A little goes a long way. Using too much may give you that coated feeling. Otherwise, it is a wonderful conditioner.
Karen April 19th, 2005, 05:35 AM I own and have used both probably since this thread was first started
I prefer the BWC (old-formula) because it leaves my hair less stiff and less coated. With both though, if I overuse them, I have a white residue problem.
Dulci April 19th, 2005, 09:19 AM I own and have used all three; both the old and new formulas of BWC leave-in, and also the Giovanni Direct.
My favorite is the old formula BWC.
The Giovanni Direct smells wonderful, very fresh, but leaves my hair sticky. So did the new BWC first time I used it. :(
The second trial with new BWC is a bit better. I applied less and blotted afterwards. I still need to wash my hands after working with my dried hair though.
If I can't get new BWC to work for me I will get some Bumble & Bumble leave-in from eBay, I remember it worked really well for me. It is very light and performs much like the old BWC, but it's not a 'natural' product and it's harder to get.
VSkye April 24th, 2005, 01:25 PM I prefer Giovanni. Their products leave my hair feeling wonderful.
rainee April 25th, 2005, 07:24 AM hey everybody!

thanks!!!!
I've used
- Giovanni direct leave-in
- Giovanni spray leave-in
- BWC leave-in
According to the bottles, the giovanni spray is supposed to be more conditioning than the direct - and this was definately the case. My favorite is the giovanni spray, followed by the BWC. I didn't find the Giovanni direct to be conditioning enough for me. I think the giovanni spray leave-in is called vitapro or something like that. I also apply it by pouring a 1/4" into a cup, adding water, and pouring through hair - it conditions and detangles enough that I don't need a separate conditioner.
2BThinAgain July 29th, 2005, 09:59 AM I haven't used either one of them yet, though the other day when I was looking around at drugstore.com, I saw BWC there. Just another place to buy it. Don't know how the price varies from one place to the other, just thought I'd try to be of some help :)
