View Full Version : Miracle Whip
Princess Buttercup May 6th, 2003, 03:13 AM In doing a Google search on skincare, I came across an old version of the LHL skincare board where a bunch of people were raving about the Miracle Whip facial.
I was just wondering if anyone here had tried this, and are still doing it long-term? It was getting such raves, I'm surprised I never heard anything about it here.
Thanks!
Tresses May 6th, 2003, 04:31 AM Hi there, PB! I did try the MW facials last year. I have not done them longterm. Mostly because I'm terribly lazy about my skincare and I'm happy with what I use now. One thing I did notice is that I didn't get the rub off that other people got. I can only assume that my routine of cleansing with oils and weekly brown sugar scrubs was doing a very good job on its own. Every now and then I look at the MW in the fridge and think I might try it again just for something different. Heaven knows I'm not going to EAT the stuff! Blech! I have a mixed marriage: I'm Hellman's, he's Miracle Whip. ;-)
If you give it a shot do report back. I think alot of people would be interested in this. :-)
Princess Buttercup May 6th, 2003, 05:32 AM Hi there Tresses! Wow... the posts I was looking at were from about a year ago, and there was a pic of you on there with BS length hair! You've really gotten a lot of growth!
Re the MW treatment... I think I will give it a shot. I'm still searching for a good inexpensive regimen for sensitive skin that's still breaking out, even as tiny lines are forming around my eyes and mouth.
We don't have any MW on hand, as hubby and I are both mayonnaise folks. I used to be in a mixed marriage but I divorced him. ;) (Although the divorce had little to do with sandwich spread. Really.)
Rachel May 6th, 2003, 07:33 AM Oooh... I tried that after hearing Steph rave about it... and it had to be the most caustic stuff I put on my face. In a few minutes, my face was scarlet and burning, and it stayed that way for a good 2 hours. Yeah, it exfoliated, but that wasn't quite what I was looking for - felt like some kind of chemical burn, or something.
I'd only recommend it for very UNsensitive skin, seriously! And after that, Steph wrote back saying that even she found it was too harsh, after a while.
Just thought I'd warn you!
Rachel
tamuller May 6th, 2003, 10:27 AM I have sensitive skin and I use MW once or twice a week and I LOVE it. It tingles, and you can't get it anywhere near your eyes, but it doesn't burn me the way it did Rachel (ouch, you poor thing)!! I have a little acne from time to time and it seems to really speed up "recovery" from breakouts and leaves my face feeling soft and moisturized! I also use EVOO. If you have sensitive skin it might be best to try it on a little section of skin before using it all over.
I put on the MW and leave it for about half an hour (usually I have something in my hair at the same time, like oil), then I get in the shower and wash it all off. I rinse off the MW with lukewarm water then gently wash my face with a 100% cotton cloth (NOT terry), lukewarm water, and Dove for Sensitive Skin. After patting dry, I apply a tiny amount of EVOO to my fingertips and rub it in all over my face and neck.
You can use MW all over your body! It feels creepy but holy guacamole is your skin nice and smooth after that! I have those little bumps on my upper arms and buttocks and MW makes those MAGICALLY DISAPPEAR. Woohoo!
Be sure you use regular MW, not low-fat or fat-free or any other version, and regular mayonnaise doesn't work. It has to be Miracle Whip.
I also do a kitty litter clay mask once or twice a week. The combination of using EVOO, MW, clay, no hot water, and no scrubbing has really really REALLY helped my skin look fabulous! I have used every expensive product line there is and spent hundreds upon HUNDREDS of $$$ and NEVER looked this good before, so thbbbbbbb to all the peddlers of that overpriced gobbledegook! All I needed cost less that $20 at my grocery store.
The things I have learned from these boards have really changed my life in so many ways, I can't begin to tell you...

Teacherbear May 6th, 2003, 02:31 PM If you have sensitive skin it might be best to try it on a little section of skin before using it all over.
I was wondering if the bend in the elbow would be a good testing site. . . . what do you think?
After patting dry, I apply a tiny amount of EVOO to my fingertips and rub it in all over my face and neck.
Someone said they use castor oil for wrinkles and it does MIRACLES! Also, Tracey, wasn't it you who said that using EVOO tended to make your blemished skin break out LESS? Something about adding oil to oily skin actually improved it. Is that right?

 now that's an idea!!!

    Did she say KITTY LITTER??????    Would it work with that flushable kind of stuff?  ANd, do you just pat it on and let it dry??? ACK!
Thanks Tracey! :)
Rachel May 6th, 2003, 02:36 PM Actually, I think Steph wrote back saying that it seemed to work better for older, more mature skin - those people didn't seem to get the bad reactions as much as the younger skin, for whatever reason.
I think the line was around 35 years?
Rachel
Nutswmn May 6th, 2003, 03:52 PM i love the stuff! i started doing the facials about a year ago and what a difference it made in my skin!! i only do them maybe once a month now because my skin is so much better. i don't have acne anymore and i hardly have any blackheads. only i notice them.
it is weird putting it on your face, letting it sit a few minutes(i take my bath while it sits)and the rubbing it off. the stuff thats comes off is amazing. i can tell it is gettting the blackheads out when it feels like grains of sand under my fingers.
i don't have really sensitive skin so i haven't experienced any irritation. go ahead and try it. it might work for you.
Princess Buttercup May 6th, 2003, 06:16 PM Well, I went out and picked up a small jar of MW. I'm going to try a little on my inner arm tonight and if I don't get any irritation from it, I'll probably do the facial thing tomorrow.
I'll report back, whatever the results! :)
Heidi May 6th, 2003, 06:26 PM I've read that the best place to test a product is on your wrist or inner lower arm.
I'm wondering if it's the mustard powder that's so irritating?
Rachel May 7th, 2003, 07:15 AM Plain white vinegar probably isn't all that soothing, either - not sure if it contains mustard powder (didn't read that on the label) but I think it does contain paprika... which doesn't seem all that irritating - who knows?
I've used straight oil on my face... eggs on my face... ACV on my face... with no irritation. I guess it's just the combo of everything that practically burned my skin off...
And Princess BC - maybe a patch test on your face might be more accurate, since even though your arm skin is sensitive, it's still not facial skin. Somewhere along the jawline, maybe? That way, you're testing it on facial skin, and probably won't have any surprises.
And keep some aloe handy, just in case you do have an adverse reaction!
Rachel
Sheba May 7th, 2003, 11:24 AM PBC - there was quite a lengthy discussion on this over at Steph's Beauty Bottle skin care boards about a year ago... you can do a search there...
www.thebeautybottle.com
Rachel... I think you're right about the age thing. Can't remember for sure though.
TBear - I'm another major oily who's found a lot of good from adding oils to my face... definitely slows down the oil production. Harsh cleansers to get rid of the oil only produces more oil.
Similar to Tresses, I use a sugar and olive oil (plus EOs) scrub on my face, but I use it twice per week. I also use it all over my body and produces the softest skin I've ever had. I use it before shaving my legs and I get the closest shave - amazing smooth skin.
HTH, Sheba
Princess Buttercup May 7th, 2003, 12:30 PM Well, I gave it a try this afternoon and WOW! It really DOES give you baby-butt skin (as someone on the LHL said.)
I wasn't expecting a whole lot of gunk to come off my face, as I use a Buf-Puf almost daily, but slathered on a thin layer of MW, waited 10 minutes and rubbed, and I couldn't believe all the rolled up bits of dead skin that came off! I even did the mask a second time because I got tired of rubbing after a few minutes the first time and wasn't sure I'd gotten everything off that I could, and a lot more dead stuff came up the second time too.
There was no irritation to speak of from the MW. But I finished up with a light going-over with the Buf-Puf and my regular soap, and I think that may have been a bit much. My skin feels just slightly irritated, but really not very bad. I slathered on a little avocado oil mixed with aloe and a bit of vitamin c cream, and my face feels amazingly soft.
I'll probably try it again in a few days... meanwhile, I've got my feet all slathered up with Miracle Whip inside a pair of cotton bed socks! Let's see if it works on my yucky dry heels. :D
Rachel May 7th, 2003, 02:13 PM Sheba, that's where I first read about the MW mask, too! Princess BC, I'm glad it worked for you with zero irritation - wish that was the way it happened for me, too!
And one thing I was wondering... has anyone wondered if all the stuff you're rubbing off your skin is (at least, the majority of it) just the dried on Miracle Whip? I recall several people saying that they were surprised at the amount of "rub-off" that they had, considering they exfoliated regularly. Perhaps it's not all skin coming off, but mostly the MW?
Rachel
tamuller May 7th, 2003, 11:05 PM Hey, Princess Buttercup, glad it worked for you!
That's interesting about the age thing... I'm 35, am I older already? (When did that happen? lol) I recommended MW to a 20yo young man who is a client of my roommate's and he didn't have any problems with it - not saying the young/old skin theory isn't a good one, just throwing in that particular bit of ancedotal evidence. He loves the EVOO, too, both have really helped him with his acne which has been a problem for him for almost ten years, poor guy.
Yes, I use actual kitty litter on my face! You have to look for 100% clay that is fragrance free - it MUST NOT have anything else in it but 100% clay, which is usually one of the cheaper or store brand. So essentially, you're just buying granulated clay. A small bag will last you years, depending on how often you use it. I am allergic to cats so it was really weird hunting for cat litter in the pets aisle at the store! lol
My roommate uses a pestle and mortar (I think that's how it's spelled?) to grind the clay into a coarse powder for me, then I add a little water to it and mix it into a thin mud, and apply it all over my face and neck. Depending on how finely you grind it, it can have an exfoliating effect, too. I leave it on for half an hour (it dries completely during that time) then rinse off and wash my face as usual. IIRC, the clay draws stuff out of your skin, absorbing it, and then you wash it all away. It can be messy, so be careful where you apply it and where you go while it's on, or you might end up leaving a little trail of drips behind you! Clay leaves my face feeling soft and oh-so-smoooooooooth.
HTH!

tamuller May 7th, 2003, 11:12 PM Oops! Forgot something -
Teacherbear - yes, EVOO has helped with my acne ENORMOUSLY. I hadn't had too much trouble with acne until I moved from the California coast to the driest part of the North American continent - within weeks my face was breaking out like crazy - ACK!! I did everything I could to deal with it, including those awful benzoyl peroxide creams - YUCK. I couldn't believe it when someone told me EVOO would help my acne go away and it creeped me out the first time I used it, but when I woke up the next morning and looked in the mirror... OMG! That was the closest my skin had looked to pre-desert, and that was just overnight! It got even better with time. It took a little bit of trial and error to figure out just how much or little to use, and when the humidity swings back and forth (we're in single digits now - oy), I have to re-experiement to find out what my face needs, but it's not much trouble and my face looks fabulous. At 35 I don't HAVE wrinkles. :D Partly that is genetics, but it's also because I stay the heck out of the sun, use sunscreen, drink tons of water, and use EVOO!
BTW, I had a few - not many - acne scars, and the combination of using EVOO and MW has helped make them almost invisible. How cool is that?!

*wheels turning* I wonder if that could be used on hair, too...? I mean, after all, lots of us bought expensive clay to put in our hair. I'm not sure it's really much different.
*contemplates* Well, if my experiment with my red clay works, I might be trying this, depending on how adventerous I feel.
FWIW, I found that using oils on my face has dramatically improved my acne, too. I still have some breakouts, but far less than I used to.
Cheers,
Jonobie
The pure kitty litter (no fragrance, no additives, just straight clay cat litter) is pure Fuller's Earth. Fuller's Earth is a clay popular in cosmetic clay masks - you can fork out ten dollars for a 2 oz. jar of clay mask, or you can spend two dollars on a 2-lb. bag of clay cat litter :D
Fuller's Earth/cat litter is very astringent and drawing, so its best used on very oily and blackheaded skins; don't use it if your skin is dry.
Regarding the Miracle Whip, it works because it is essentially an acid peel (its the vinegar.) The high proportion of vinegar is what makes it so irritating to sensitive skins: If you find this works for you, but is too irritating to use all over your face, confine it to the less sensitive regions such as your nose and chin (which also seem to be the areas most in need). Yes, I have wondered if what's rolling isn't dried MW ingredients; I'm quite certain that there is a large percentage of that, in addition to the dead skin that I *am* pulling off with it. (My skin is resistant to exfoliation, so even with baking soda scrubs, I still wind up pulling a fair amount off)
Is mise le meas

Rachel May 8th, 2003, 08:36 AM For those that find the Fuller's Earth drying... I've found French Pink Clay to be less so. Even other clays make my face feel like it's going to crack...
Rachel
tamuller May 8th, 2003, 09:50 AM I don't find the clay dries my face much, although I can feel a little "tightening" towards the end of the half hour, so maybe it is drying a little? My face doesn't feel dry at all when I wash the clay off. For that reason, though, I don't think I'd use it on my hair, because my hair is dry. I wouldn't mind using the clay all over my entire body, though, since it makes my face feel so fabulous. I'm beginning to understand why people soak in mud baths.
If anyone tries a kitty litter mask on their hair, please post! I'm curious to know how it comes out.
Tracey

Thanks for that info, Katz! I was contemplating using this, but I am going to rethink it now.
I do not tend to have problems with acne, and my face is not oily. I wouldn't exactly say it is dry, either. I thought it was normal . . . until I tried a facial mask a few weeks ago. It didn't "draw" or pull, but when I washed it off, my face was incredibly dry, even flaky!!!!! It took almost a week of moisturizing it for it to regain it's non-flaky appearance!
<sigh> now I have a once used tube a facial mask! <tossing it into the Goodwill Donation bag>
Dulci May 9th, 2003, 06:05 AM oh I haven't done a MW mask in a long while, not since it helped get my flakies under control. There were lots and lots of threads about MW on the icompact skincare boards over a year ago, that's where I first read about it. I think the consensus there was that younger ladies with active skin did not like it at all, as it brought all the bad stuff up. Older ladies (like me :P ) that have leathery sundamage patches liked it.
I'll have to try one again, I really liked the results. The very first time I did one, a patch of dark sundamaged skin under my jawline rolled up and peeled off just like a sunburn. 8)
Clay masks don't seem to do much for me. Occasionally I'll do a Queen Helene's Mint Julep mask, but only to use it up.
and I can't seem to get on the Beauty Bottle forums, is it just me or are they down? :?:
rosepetal May 9th, 2003, 08:41 AM oh I haven't done a MW mask in a long while, not since it helped get my flakies under control.
How much MW do you use? How long should it sit???
How do you take it off?
Thanks!!!
Rachel May 9th, 2003, 09:40 AM Just spread it over your face like a mask... let it sit for about 10 minutes (or is it 20? Sorry, can't remember since I ended up washing it off in 2  ) and then sort of "rub" it off.
Someone who has done it more often can probably help you out more if you have more questions...
Rachel
Rachel May 9th, 2003, 09:41 AM Dulci - I can't get to the forums, either, and haven't been able to, for a while... although I can go to the rest of the site. Maybe Steph took 'em down, because they weren't being used? I know that there were hardly any recent posts on there.
Rachel
tamuller May 9th, 2003, 09:59 AM I use maybe two-three teaspoonfuls to cover my face and neck completely but in a thin layer. It doesn't have to be goopy. Since an open bottle of MW has to be refrigerated, I rub it between my hands for a few seconds to warm it up before I put it on because otherwise it's COOOOOLD. The worst part is the initial touch to your face, it's easy to put on after that!
I don't use the "rub off" method. I leave it on for a half hour then I rinse it off with lukewarm water and wash my face as usual, using lukewarm water, Dove for sensitive skin, and a flat 100% cotton cloth (not a washcloth, part of an old t-shirt, actually). Then I put a very thin layer of EVOO all over my face and neck to moisturize.

I don't put it close to my eye area though...

ooooOOOOoooo! I'll have to try it before shaving my legs! Hadn't thought of that. Thanks, Sheba! :D
tamuller May 10th, 2003, 12:48 AM The sugar/EVOO shaving technique sounds interesting! I don't shave very often but sometimes I do before going to see a doctor, I don't have much hair on my legs but I'm a little self-conscious about it when I know someone's looking closely. (Once I apologized to a doctor for not shaving my legs - he was looking at a weird chem burn on one of them that we never did find an explanation for - and he looked up from where he was sitting and said, "You know, I see a lot worse than this..." LOL He's so hilarious, I love my doctor.)
How does the sugar/EVOO shave work?? You mix some sugar with EVOO, spread it onto your legs, then shave it off, like you would use a shaving cream?
What ratio sugar to EVOO?
Just regular ol' white sugar?
Thank you!
Tracey
Sheba May 10th, 2003, 11:54 AM Oh dear Tracey....
sorry for the confusion. I use the sugar/evoo as a scrub FIRST.... then use shave gel and razor to shave! The point is that the scrub gets rid of a layer of skin so the shave is really close!
hehehehe.... Sheba
