Hi, all! I'm new to these boards but not to loving long hair. Some of you may recognize me from the LHL boards.

My story: I cut my hair to a chin length bob from a shoulder length shag (from almost bsl) back in June of 2001. Since then I've been growing towards waist-length and am happy to report that I'm only 7.5 inches away!

I have oily hair that has begun to demonstrate a mind of its own more frequently. Over all, my hair is in decent shape, although my long-time use of sharp bobby pins has contributed to breakage. :( A friend has described my hair as "fragile," so I have to be extra careful with my length.

Well, that's about all there is to say about me. I look forward to learning from all of you!

I'm not really sure how you were using the bobby pins but perhaps you might want to try Magic Grip Hairpins? They work great for holding hair and are hair friendly. I picked up a package of 10 for $1.69 at Sally Beauty Supply. Here's a website so you can see what they look like:
