So we can see where we all started from. ;)

I started at 18 inches, which is just about past shoulder length for my curly hair.

Rob Dehlinger
February 22nd, 2003, 12:06 PM
Which is 11 inches on me!

I had it about 1/2 inch in Basic Training THIRTY TWO years ago. NEVER AGAIN! :(

I am sure loving it now! :D

I voted shoulder-to-bra strap, because my hair was just past shoulder length when I seriously decided to grow my hair. It was layered and permed.

The shortest my hair has ever been was a pixie cut in 2nd grade.

Now is the longest my hair has ever been.

I'm going to say pixie to chin, because it sure as heck was nowhere near my shoulders!!!

I started with nothing literally, because my cut was about 1/4"on the back of my head. On the top the length was about 1-1.5"

My hair was between waist and classic when I decided I wanted to grow it longer. I had som really bad damage and had to cut off 14 inches to just below b/s length. This actually helped the overall condition of my hair, and I have had less breakage problems since I did this. My hair was just above waist when I joined this board, and I cut 2.5 more inches of damage off.

Although I hate to loose any length, I have learned from experience that snipping out the damage is better than leaving it in. In the long run, pun intended, it helps my hair to achieve a greater length.

I wasn't sure what to put started with about 3 inches all over, didn't seriously start growing it long (growing with a purpose so to speak) until it was shoulder length.

well my story's a little more complicated.

I've had long hair most of my life.

I cut it when I was in my teens and then grew it back out to classic in my 20's, then I kept cutting little bits off here and there because I didn't take care of it, but it was always at least waist length.

I started at about 27 when I found LHL, after a big trim and then grew it to just past waist and then I cut it last spring and started over again at about 24 inches.

Now I'm on my way to waist again. Whew!!!

When I was 10, I chose to have my shoulder length "mullet-ish" hair (shorter in front and on top, but longer in the back in layers) cut very, very short. It started less than an inch in back, and about an inch on top, a typical boy's cut. I wanted to not have to cut my hair for a very long time, but it ended up backfiring on me when I got mistaken for a boy too many times and I sat next to the girl with the longest and thickest hair in the school. Instantly, I regretted cutting my hair *that* short, because it knew it was going to take me a long, long time to reach waist length. I used to play with sheer panels of drapery just to get the effect of super long hair. It was a really neat feeling.

I paused for periods of time for various lengths to catch up, and made a 7 year long hiatus on growing, but still maintaining length, and started again at hip length a year or so ago.

Now that I'm starting to realize my dream of really, really long hair, I'm starting to wake up to what a journey this has been, some 16 1/2 years later.

First I want to say that there are now at least 2 polls with this topic.

Here is the other
(Edited to add: in case you haven't had the pleasure to read the other one or participate in it)
"What length did you "start" with when you decided" - by leonardiane
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com//showthread.php?t=2200

I chose pixie and shorter, although I wouldn't call it a pixie. But that was the choice that was closest to it.
In April 94 I got my hair cut to 3 inches long and I asked her to feather it to blend the back. I wanted it to look like it wasn't just cut. Even though my hair was like 8 inches long then before the cut. That's 8 inches on one strand pulled out. Not the forehead back method.

This was august 94 a few months later.
http://mediaservice.photoisland.com/auction/Mar/20043209019866715972149.jpg

After having my hair near shoulder length the two previous times this time I was over 18 and no one could force me to cut it so I let it grow until late 97. I need to update a lot of posts and my journal because I was thinking I waited till 96 but now I'm remembering that it wasn't until after the first 2 weeks of august of 97 that I got the first trim. I remember now because that august I was driving around lower Michigan on my first lighthouse photographing vacation and I was thinking of getting a trim while I was out of town. But I waited till a few weeks later and did it closer to home but still an hour away. So now that I'm remembering that, I have had 2 complete periods of at least 3 years between trims. That first time I lost a lot of inches cuz my hair was uneven. This time I trimmed the other day using Feye's slight U and only lost up to 2 inches and in most spots only 1/2 an inch.

Between shoulder and BS, probably closer to shoulder...I think it was between 18" and 22". That was about 2.5 to 3 years ago, and now I'm just past 39", so I'm pretty happy with the growth rate thus far. :frog:

Good question! In case you're impatient, you can see the results of a similar poll here: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=2200

I've almost always had long hair, despite a few awful and regretful cuts. So, I didn't really start anywhere.. I just fluctuated. :ponder:

About 1 1/2 inches all over with lots of texturizing. I use paste or wax and really love this hairstyle. When I want it short this is always what is done. The only thing is that after a couple of years I want it long, so starts the process.

I had a spiral perm that had gotten fried by being permed too many times. I cut most of it off so I was about 3 - 5 inches of (what the stylist called) virgin hair. From then on I have let it grow with a few trims to even up the ends. I think I have the perfect length for me now, but I am starting to rethink my plans. So many people here have such beautiful hair.

Well, this time around (since finding the hair sites in May of 2001) I started with almost BSL. I had kept it around that length for almost 20 years, starting in High School. When I started growing out in Jr. High I had a pixie (but calling it that would be kind :scared: ).

Here's my first hair pic from September 2001:

Haha, in 5th grade I decided to grow my hair out... it was about BS length then. My hair grows pretty fast, so from the time I turned 12 til now (I just turned 20) it's been somewhere between waist and classic length.

Prior to my current long hair, I had really short hair (2-3 inches at most). It looked awful! :silly:

I'd like to say this is the longest my hair's ever been (classic length), but it's not quite accurate. In terms of actual measurement, it is. But when I was 4 years old, my hair was about knee-length, so in terms of body proportions, it's not the longest it's ever been. Of course, I'm only slightly taller now than I was at 4 years old... I'm a shortie!

My last cut was chin-length, but I was in kindergarten. I voted for BS to waist as that's the length I had when I found this website and became conscious of my hair.

May 24th, 2004, 09:25 PM
Well, I've had shoulder to BS length hair most of my life with a few shorter cuts inbetween...but, my last major cut ended up being right below the chin, because I was cutting off damaged 'dyed-and-redyed-again' hair. So, it was pretty short...and, I've been mostly just growing it out since. (That will be two years ago, this August, I believe.)

I started with my Avatar. I hated that haircut soooooo much. I havent cut my hair since then (May last year.) Thats why my hair is still very layered. I've only had very minor trims since then.Fortunatly I plan to keep my layers as I like how my hiar has movement with them.

I was hoping there was a poll for this question!

To explain why I voted waist or longer:

I grew my hair from a very short boy-cut to tailbone length between 10-18.
Then, in the timespan of about month, I cut about 6 inches from my hair, mainly because it did not look healthy. And, I maintained between waist and hip length for the next 7 or so years.

My hair seemed to want to grow alot longer - my volume remained almost totally full to my ends, except for the bangs that were still growing out, but I was never satisfied with how my ends looked beyond about hip length. When I discovered long hair boards, I learned to properly care for my hair, and decided to realize my lifelong dream: to see how long my hair can actually grow. So, I consciously started growing my hair again when it was about 36", which was about hip length, two and a half years ago.

I'm not sure how long my hair was when I got The Evil Cut. It was verrrryyyy short, and with my curls ended up in a sort of fro thing. I locked myself into my grandmother's bathroom for about half an hour crying. I am told it was cute, but I didn't think so. By the way, I have had short haircuts that I really liked, that last one just sort of put me off haircuts. I didn't start growing with a purpose until my hair was about two or three inches below my shoulders.

.24" long. Yes, 1/4" of an inch. Buzz cut, bleached blond. I felt literally ill when mom buzzed the hair off, but it ended up REALLY suiting my face and it looked very cute. Buzz cut all around expect for bangs and short side burn type things I use to curl into 1920's styled whisps near my ears.

Dorky photo of me about 6 months after I tired of that idea, about age 15 or 16 I believe. Yes, it was one of those awkward phases, both hair wise and age wise:
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/kissedbyfire/16.jpg

After that cut I decided I wanted long hair again. It started with the goal of waist. Closer I got to waist, I wanted tale bone. When I realized I'm about a year shy of tale bone, mom suggested classic. I say in about 2 years I'll be at classic.

Right now my hair is at waist, somewhere around 30", it's the longest it's ever been. I could never seem to get it past mid bust when I was younger.

The first time I started growing my hair long was when i was 8 years old.
The second time was...can't rememeber, I have been growing it long for so long(five years, give or take a year), had it cut short because of the damage (not sure if it could be called pixie or not, but it wasn't much longer) and now I'm still just a little past shoulder length.
I didn't think about growing very long until I came to this board though-at the time the longest layers were just about to hit the shoulder length as far as I can remember.

hm. I don't really know when I actually started to grow my hair out... I cut it short when I was 15 but I let that grow out. Had shoulder length for a while... then decided to grow it out very long. But it was past my shoulders when I actually started measuring, in october '04.

I voted 'chin to shoulder length' because that's when I decided to let it grow and never cut it again.

I started with pixie-chin length. I had the biggest "cuttings" done when my son was young -- I think it was my way of trying to control a small part of my life when I felt out of control as a new parent, and my marriage was enduring some strains at the time as well.

My husband did not like it as I kept cutting it a bit shorter every few months. Looking back, I would say he asked me to grow it out for about 6-7 years! And I just said no, too much of a hassle, no time, easiser short, etc. Finally, I figured I would give growing out another try -- I was finally ready to deal with all of the icky stages my curls and slow growth go through. Now that I've hit shoulder length, I am so happy with the progress (definitely not at goal yet though!) and I see that it is easier to have long hair as long as I know how to care for it and style it. Thanks, again, to the people I've met at LHC! :flower:

I started in the fall of 2002 from a buzz cut. The cut grew longish, it was time to go for a trim and I just didn't go. I probably had 1 - 1.5 inches of hair all around. The rest is history, as we say.

I had a very short, sort of boy cut. I got it cut in may 2003 and the hair on the back of my head was maybe 1/2 inch long. maybe not that much! The top and front was about 1.5 inches long. i started from a little longer than pixie...it was one of those spiky-topped long-bangs punky things. really short on the sides. oh, and bleached/dyed fuschia.

i let it grow out to about my chin simply because i got too lazy to keep getting it trimmed into shape. i'd say it was about chin-length when i decided to really grow it.

Chin to shoulder... well....................

I HAD beyond waist nearly tailbone length hair in 2003. BUT I was pregnant, had a 2.5 yo and a wanna be teen it was Mid Summer and my hair just seemed to come last, I wanted something 'easier' to take care of. SO it was off to Mom's. She chopped it to just above my shoulders, and I have been growing it back ever since. I'm about mid back now (below BSL not quite to waist ;) ). I look forward to waist again and then beyond.

My current goal for a length to hold at is Classic but longer would be nice too.

I checked "shoulder to bra strap" because it was right at my shoulders, and now I'm almost at bra strap. This is about as long as I have typically let it grow. I feel so freed to accept that I can let it just keep growing and growing, without having to get it trimmed back more than I want to.

In 2001 I got my hair cut 2 inches short all over my head. I hated it but I got a lot of compliments of course. People seem to like other people to have short hair for some reason. Anyway, I felt like a little boy with short hair, I felt like I had to dress more feminine and wear makeup all the time. I will never cut my hair that short again.
I am trying to get it to waist length and if I dont like the way it looks waist length, the shortest I would ever cut my hair again is a few inches below the shoulder.
I really got serious about growing my hair out long when it grew out a couple inches past my shoulders.

I originally got my hair cut about two years ago to a very short layered cut. In fact, it was so short that I looked like a boy - according to my brother and some kid off the street  ! My brother started calling me his "brother" and he didn't mean it in a nice way :uhh: ! Funny, cause I really didn't think he even cared :disbelief: ! Anyhow, I found it terrible to be mistaken for a guy and vowed never to cut my hair THAT short again . In fact, I decided to just stick to long hair (besides my fiancee loves it long) :smooch:!

When I was in grade school it was about mid back length, but I never cared for it. From high school until recently it's always been in a shoulder length layered style. Then two years ago I had it cut into a very short layered style. I grew all that out over the last two years, just recently cut the last of the layers out a month ago. So a month ago when I decided to really grow it out this time, I started at pixie to chin. Now it's just below chin, I am hoping that by Christmas it will be at the shoulders.

I had been keeping my hair at shoulder length and was in need of a trim at the time I decided to start growing - so a couple inches below the shoulder. I'm glad I realized I wanted long hair before I got that trim!

So we can see where we all started from. ;)

I'm pretty new here, and I just recently decided to grow it out. I'm very excited, and my hair is just past shoulder length now. I can't wait till it even touches my bra strap, because my hair has NEVER been longer then it is now!!

I would say about mid back. I don't really have a definate starting point, because from about 10 yrs. to 14 yrs. it just kinda grew. I didn't pay it any attention, measure it, nothin'. Then when I started taking care of it, I got 6 inches cut because of the splits were that bad. Now my hair is waist lenght, my goal is tailbone/classic. I want to be a long virgin haired old lady! Grow hair Grow!!

Some years ago I was really stupid enough and shaved my hair. I went in fact bold:silly: Well, I rediscovered sanity and let my hair outgrow again. Now it is almost bra long (DH is very happy about that and can't wait till it reaches the waist8))

I actually started growing my hair long with a pixie cut. But I wanted to grow it long anyway..so!
15" in my profile aren't correct, because that was just the length when I started to measure my hair. Maybe I should change it to pixie

Well now, I took this to mean when I join here, so I put below waist, as it was 44 inches when I joined. When I decided to grow it long it was chin length. I'd had it cut even at that length all round and have never cut it again, not even a trim.

I had tried to grow my hair many times after I'd gotten it cut short.

success came after I'd shaved it bald. I haven't gone for more than just a trim since that time. now I'm not going in for a trim at all - I will dust and search and destroy at home.

My wife started last August with an ear-tip cut:

In early December it was neck length:

And now is almost shoulder length:

I am really hoping she continues to a below shoulder to bra strap llength.

I cut my hair in Sept 2003 into a chin length bob when I got married. I sort of wish I hadn't or I'd have 5 more inches of length today. It was very healthy too. But I don't think shoulderlength is very flattering on me and I wanted nice hair on my wedding. I think I cut it back to a bob once a few months after that, but i've pretty much been growing it out since then. I got a few trims, probably 2-3 inches off total. I measured to where it used to be and it was 11 inches from the hairline. I'm at 27 now, so I guess I grow pretty fast.

I picked "Shoulder to Bra-strap". I chopped it, because I was bored. While I don't regreat it, per se, I will never do it again.

I said pixie or shorter. I did shave my head in 2002. Then I started growing it back. I do not recall cutting it, because I had longish hair when I got married in 2003. It was about a year from when I shaved my head to my wedding. Then I got it cut twice in 2004, once for my birthday and once in April. Both were a few inches, mostly from the back. So I consider starting from bald, because I was good when I got my hair cut and only had a little bit taken off.

For me it's very difficult to say what did I "start with", as I've had BSL as long as I can remember (and it seems to stay around that length, too)... And I've also been growing my hair as long as I can remember! I did have a major cut, to just above shoulder-length, about 14 years ago, but in 2 years from that I was back to BSL, and as I said, thereabouts it has remained ever since... So no real "starting point" for me (how about birth? :))

(I'm a bit surprised, actually, at the fact that almost everyone here seems to have a clear-cut starting point; I would have imagined - before joining, at least - a LHC to consist mainly of people who have always had/wanted long hair! :) Well, now I know better.)

I started with pixie length hair. Zoya's description pretty much fits what my haircut had been like - 1/4 inch buzz cut in the back and on top about 1 to 1.5 inches.

Since I've started growing my hair, I've really wondered why I didn't do it earlier. I don't think I'll ever have short hair again - I LOVE my long hair so much now. :inlove:

Looks like I'm pretty average, having started with chin- to shoulder-length hair. I kept my hair at chin-length for years and then one day I randomly quit cutting it. A few years later, I ended up here, & decided to quit trimming it as well. :)

Started about chin length, but once I got about shoulder and below, kept trimming it to ward off those ugly ends. I stopped trimming so much and grew it about to BSL. Then 3 weeks ago, had a friend cut about 5 1/2" to even it all up. So, I am now starting at just below shoulder...again. But I have a feeling I will get it where I want it with the help of this community.

I started with chin length hair, got stuck with shoulder length hair, and now stuck with bra strap length hair. Had it at bra strap length but cut it because it was so dry from improper care. This has a huge impact on my hair. Can't wait to get it past my bra strap and get caught when I sit down.

Chin to shoulder. I had cut from mid-hip to just above shoulder. And then kept it there for a while.

I do sometimes dream of a short haircut--like mid-neck, layered... but not enough to cut. :-)

Pixie, definitely, which is about the shortest my NATURAL hair has ever been - but it's about 6 inches or so, which would be chin-length if it was straight. Many moons ago, I chopped off about 16 inches of relaxed hair into a pixie style that left me with MAYBE 3 inches of straight hair.

I started out with shoulder length layers. Damn that Jennifer Anniston.

Ha! 11 or 12 years ago when she had that hairdo that was like a watermelon stuck over her head with flipped up ends, everyone had Jennifer haircuts. I had a cut that I really really liked, and when it was trim time I told the hairdresser to cut it just like she did before. I came out with a Jennifer cut. I was so hacked off I never went back to her!

Mostly now I just chop on it myself. I have layers that were all 6-7" long in May.

Between shoulder and BSL, but closer to BSL at 24" when I found LHC. I am now at 23" thanks to all the damage I have cut out. I have still got a bit of damage to cut out but then I will be letting it grow till it stops.

I decided to quit getting haircuts in 1990. My hair was 2" long on top and shaved to the neck in back, though I had a BSL side tail that I had made into a hair wrap which got to nearly waist length before I finally removed it. I've had holding patterns (self-induced, not stopped growth) at BSL and waist but am now going for terminal.

Chin length bob in May of '06. My hair has gone between that length and about where it is now quite a few times. When I have a bob, I want it long. Then when it hits shoulder length I start getting annoyed and impatient and hack it off.
My hair looks nice as a bob but I love long hair and all the styles that can be done. I can't wait till I get a few more inches! Then it will be what I consider to be long.

I had hip length hair, but destroyed it with dye and rough handling, so it broke off to nearly BSL. After years of care and henna, and trimming off the crap, I'm nearly back to where I started. I'm heading for TB as a final goal, and then growing out the last 10 inches of dye as an overall goal after that.

I started with a little past waist ^^

Since 2003 I was getting haircuts less often (every 2 months) an so it slowly grew down..sometimes I cut a little more sometimes a little less..So I spend a long time at BSL, midback and waist before I finally thought "ok hair if you want to grow so bad, then so it shall be!"^^
Before I had a hard time keeping up a clean cut because my hair just loves its own V-shape 0_o...
There was a time when I tried keeping it sholder length...I had to go get atrim every 2-3 weeks -.-....sometimes I was so annoyed that I tild the hairstylist just to cut of more than a half inche so I dont have to come back soon, which did not really make it look better -_-

Started actively growing it out at about BSL. Before that I wanted it long, but just kind of let it go, but didn't really realize I wanted it LONG LONG until I got a very layered haircut in June and regretted it. I'm gonna be growing out these years of layers for a long time...

I started, 4 years ago, with bleach blonde (white) hair that took three hours of bleach to get it that color and never looked good unless the hairdresser styled it. I decided to grow out the color and get it long enough so that I could cut off 10" to donate to Locks of Love and still have some hair left. I discovered these bords a few weeks ago and since then have decided to see what my hair would look like waist length. Maybe once I get there I will still cut it off and donate it. We shall see.

I started just a bit above shoulder length. Over the past few years I have been going from longer to short again (cried my eyes out), back to longer (was quite happy, though over time I got disappointed because my straight hair shows any damage very easily), cut it off again... and finally realised that I was meant to have longer hair. Even if it were only for the shape of my face, it just suits me better.

I have been treating my hair with consciousness for a whole year now, and I still haven't changed my mind. I'm going for long hair, and I have no doubts about one thing: I'm not ever going to cut it again. ;)
