View Full Version : Anyone used Ion Hard Water Shampoo or Mane 'n Tail?
Jonobie April 25th, 2003, 06:55 AM Those are other shampoos I'm eyeing for my next purchase. Austin has terrible hard water. A friend of mine just bought a house and did a Ph test on his water, and it was so hard it was off the scale!
I used to use Mane 'n Tail detangler on Sonny, and remember it being *amazing*. I've heard their shampoos are good, too, so I figured I'd ask if anyone tried them and found them anything special.
Cheers,
Jonobie
anixia April 25th, 2003, 09:34 AM :D I was just going to post something about Mane 'N Tail myself. My local Sally's had a buy the 32oz shampoo get the 32oz conditioner free. So I got both huge bottles for about $5.50. I've used it for the past two days, adding a dime sized amount of the Natures Therapy heat protectant creme (wonderful stuff BTW). So I dont now which product it is, since I bought/started both at the same time, but my hair looks sooooo smooth and silky. But I'm afraid that the MNT will have some kind of horrible effect eventually, since the comments I've researched about it have been mixed, but it was Sweet_Peach's review of the MNT conditioner in her journal that made me want to try it, and I just got the shampoo because it was free.
So in short...I want to know too!

Huh. I haven't been able to find many MNT reviews -- what did the ones that disliked it say?
Cheers,

euphrasyne April 25th, 2003, 10:12 AM I haven't used MNT, but I know several local long-haired ladies who love the stuff. Its just too hard to get around here for me to bother. I'm not driving 50 miles out of my way to get it...

anixia April 25th, 2003, 02:27 PM Jonobie: Go to www.deja.com and do an advanced search for Mane n Tail in the group alt.fashion. Some said they loved it, but some had either "heard" from a stylist or friend that it was too harsh, or that it would coat your hair.

Wow, cool. Thanks for the pointer!

Twitch April 27th, 2003, 10:41 AM yup, im a huge fan of mane n tail, but ive only ever used the conditioner. ive only found it at one store in my city, and they are *always* out of shampoo. it is a very heavy conditioner, so it might build up on your hair if you use it all the time like i do... i dont really mind that, i have yet to notice any ill-effects of buildup. but then, i try to use a no-buildup shampoo because im a silicone whore.
i guess if your hair starts to get heavy then you could do some sort of clarifying treatment, otherwise just enjoy what it does for your hair.
alienwiredgirl January 5th, 2005, 05:07 PM i'v only used mane n tail once because my roomated has it , i have heard good things about it but have never really bothered with it i'm super curious to see if it would be worth stealing from him since he's shaved his head since..
naomimcc January 5th, 2005, 05:12 PM Have it. Use it. Love it. My sis-in-law owns a tack shop so I get the shampoo and conditioner from her along with a mane 'n tail silicone spray (much like a leave in conditioner) It's PHENOMENAL. But then I'm a silicone whore too
BlackRose January 5th, 2005, 06:19 PM Horse hair is sooo much different than human hair, I'd never use a horse product. My stylist has had to do major stripping treatments on clients who have used this, she says it's almost all waxes and **plastics**!

Babyfine January 6th, 2005, 07:03 AM I use the Deep Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner in rotation, which means not every time. I like them. The
regular shampoo has SLS in it, and the regular conditioner
has emulsifying wax in it, if you look at the ingredients. I've been concerned about that. However if you look over at longhairlovers.com you'll see that it was one of the top shampoos for 2004. No individual reviews. The deep moisturizing poo and cond. has SLES, and one cone, but I don't use it enough to know if it makes any difference. I guess
that's no help LOL.
lonestargal January 6th, 2005, 07:26 AM The Mane and Tail is one of my favorites...I have only used the regular poo and conditioner and am anxious to use the moisturizing ones. My husband wants me to buy only that for him also. As far as the Ion shampoo you mentioned, I have never used that one but I have used other Ion shampoos, conditioners, and treatments and like them a lot. They seemed to make my hair real soft and shiny.
catgreens January 6th, 2005, 08:05 AM I've used the Mane N' Tail shampoo once, and I've used the regular conditioner for about 9 months straight. I've moved on to a moisturizing conditioner now that I've hennaed and don't need all the protein from Mane N' Tail. It's a great, thick conditioner that detangles well. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on the shampoo!
lama January 6th, 2005, 09:42 AM I also have only used the Mane and Tail conditioner but not the shampoo. I really liked it and used the whole giant bottle of it. I would definately buy some again in the future. I noticed our local pet store (which is very tiny) also carried it, so if you can't find it at your normal store try looking in the pet area!
naomimcc January 6th, 2005, 11:50 AM My sister in law says since she's owned the shop (2 years now) she's never once sold a bottle of mane and tail for an actual horse. In her research she's discovered the formula has been adjusted to "work" for human hair as well.
bradio January 6th, 2005, 12:35 PM I live on my ranch, and for years ive used those horse products on myself at the river after washing and conditioning my horse. people use to tell me it cant be any good for humans, But of course now i have hair half way down my back, and a lot of my scoffing friends are BALD!! so, go figure!...Bradio
saracuda January 6th, 2005, 01:25 PM I used it, and I liked it, too. It's kinda neat to see this board, because I'd forgotten about it. I think I'll go get another bottle. I only used the conditioner, also. Maybe I'll try both.
Speedbump January 6th, 2005, 01:29 PM I've tried the Mane 'n Tail detangler and braid sheen. My hair didn't like either one. I think I still have almost full bottles of both. PM me if you want to take them off my hands. :)

saracuda January 6th, 2005, 01:36 PM I found this at pioneerthinking.com :
A good choice is Mane ‘n Tail shampoo, which won the Cosmo Girl 2003 Kiss of Approval award for best moisturizing shampoo. This gentle, pH balanced formula is fortified with moisturizers and emollients providing body and shine. It cleans without stripping the hair of its natural oils. Pair it with Mane ‘n Tail conditioner, an exclusive protein enriched formula which maintains, nourishes and conditions hair and scalp to aid healthy hair growth.
As the name suggests, Mane ‘n Tail products were originally developed for use on horses. They worked so well, “groomers started using the products on themselves to achieve the beautiful results they saw with their horses,” explains Devon Katzev, president of Straight Arrow Products, Inc., the parent company. The results spread by word of mouth, and the company introduced a line formulated for people in 1993. Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker are some of the many celebrities who have been quoted as counting Mane ‘n Tail products among their “beauty secrets.”
Cool, huh?
fairygirl69 January 6th, 2005, 01:59 PM We have lousy water for hair too, we live in the country and have well water. I haven't tried MNT but I have tried some of those hard water shamppos and treatments that you apply to you scalp for a few minutes. These have worked, but it was still hard on my hair and my color kept fading. What really works for me is to get a water filter that fits to your shower attachment. If I want a bath I'll draw a bath and just use the shower part for my hair. This seems to work well, we use Pc Pro's shower filter https://www.thepcproshop.com/shopfiltration.htm and my hair color hasn't faded and my hair is of better quality (softer, fuller) since I started using it about a year ago.
berr January 17th, 2005, 09:57 AM Does the filter hinder your water pressure? Not only do I have hard hard water, the water pressure isn't the greatest. lol This looks like something I might try.
SilkenTresses January 17th, 2005, 10:55 AM I have extremely hard water too. I have to use a product call CLR on all my household fixtures to get the calcium and lime off of them. I have found that mild ACV (vinegar) rinses, get rid of hard water deposits on hair, and so does clarifying shampoo. I used MNT for 2 years when I lived in Albuquerque and it did nothing special for me, it was just oK, but all my Indian friends told me it would make my hair grow. I know better now....hee hee.
Oversurf January 17th, 2005, 12:00 PM Hmmm... there are other horse shampoos out there, maybe I'll try this during blackfly season; :-)

Cyn January 17th, 2005, 05:38 PM I used M&T and it was too harsh for my hair. Though I couldn't find the conditioner and never tried it with the shampoo...may be the difference.
lonestargal January 22nd, 2005, 10:33 AM There is another horse/human shampoo and conditioner that is awesome. It's called Cowboy Magic...I find it at our local Petco. I use M&T on occasion and like it a lot but the Cowboy Magic does absolute wonders for mine and my daughters hair. The conditioner is a demineralizer and makes our hair extra extra smooth. My daughter has curly hair and the leave in treatment they make makes her hair perfect to comb out. The leave in is full of cones but if that doesn't matter to you I HIGHLY recommend this line. They have a website www.cowboymagic.com The scent is kinda funny..not bad but not real good either but no worries...it doesn't stay on the hair.
AnkyCece February 20th, 2005, 02:59 PM Mane 'n tail Original conditioner and shampoo are my two newfound loves. The shampoo did not strip my hair like other shampoos. The conditioner, WOW! It softened and detangled my hair, and I have really thick hair! I even used a little as a leave-in. It is definitely not the formula that they had back in 1989. I love this stuff now!
eilla04 February 20th, 2005, 03:53 PM I have used Mane N Tail before. I loved it at the time. Now I dont really like the smell of it anymore. I did work good at detangling though.
Eilla
PS I have some up for swap if anyone wants it!!!
Elle February 20th, 2005, 07:10 PM I was a regular user of Mane 'n Tail conditioner years ago. From what I remember, it worked pretty well on my hair.
Peach February 24th, 2005, 01:07 PM I've used Mane N Tail conditioner for the past 2 or 3 years. Never used the shampoo. The conditioner was pretty much the only conditioner I used during that time. I am now switching back and forth between it and something heavy with cones. For what it is worth, I listed the ingredients and a description of each in my journal:
