View Full Version : discovered chamomile...now what?
smiles April 22nd, 2003, 01:22 PM i cleaned my kitchen cupboard and discovered a big pack of dried chamomile in a big pack. i must have got it on any of my previous visits to whole foods. ::reminds self to check all the cupboard shelves in kitchen before a health food visit::
i've heard chamomile lightens hair. mine is dark hair and prefer to keep it dark. i already have chamomile tea bags, so cant use this whole stuff to drink as tea.
what else can i do with this?
any ideas? thanks in advance!

Anne April 22nd, 2003, 01:38 PM Yes, I've heard that you can use it as a rinse for blonde hair or to soften the hair. It's great for the skin, to soothe dry skin and you can also let a little sit in hot water for a few minutes or so and then soak some cotton pads, cool and place the pads on your eyes to help with morning puffies.
You can also put some in a muslin bag and tuck into your pillow at night for a nice soothing scent as you drift off to sleep.
I have some dream pillow herbs in my pillow, it has chamomile mixed with lavender flowers and other herbs, smells wonderful!
Have fun and I'll be interested to know what you do with those cute yellow flowers ;)
Rachel April 22nd, 2003, 01:53 PM What about drinking it? ;) It makes a soothing tea, at night time or when your stomach's upset.

thinkfirst April 22nd, 2003, 05:27 PM My favorite is to make a quart of tea and most of it chamomile flavor and a little bit - 1 tea bag of mint. Yum ym
smiles April 22nd, 2003, 07:42 PM Rachel/Thinkfirst, I already have lots of chamomile bags to make tea which i find convenient. just steep and go.... and for a person who cant take in citrusy fragrance in perfumes, I prefer "I love lemon" though.
so, drinking tea is ruled out.
and no, anne, i dont have that big a pack to form a pillow :D
Does it have any benefits on the skin? Would they work in body scrubs if i powder and add
chamomile bath scrub? LOL i've never heard of it till now... :D

I have a file of recipes from the From Nature With Love website. Here's a couple of non-hair recipes that can be used with chamomile.
Herbal Clay and Oat Mask
Submitted by Stephanie of Conway, AR
Ingredients:
1/4 cup colloidal oatmeal fine
3 Tb china clay
2 Tb lavender flowers
2 Tb chamomile flowers
One or more of the following wetting agents: honey, floral water, herbal tea, water
Instructions:
Powder dry ingredents well. Put a few tablespoons of the mix in a small bowl. Add wetting agent to
make a paste. Apply to face and allow to dry for ten to twenty minutes. Rinse with warm water.
Store remaining mixture in airtight container. Use once or twice a week. For super sensitive skin,
herbs can be left out or lessened.
Body/Facial Scrub
Submitted by Hope of Ventura, CA
Made with everyday ingredients...it can be easily modified to suit your skin type
Ingredients:
1/4 C rolled oats
1/4 C powdered milk (buttermilk or goats milk works great)
1 Tbsp table or sea salt
Extras added to above:
1Tbsp cornmeal (for extra exfoliation)
1Tbsp rose petal powder
1tsp neem powder (for problem skin)
Instructions:
Put all ingredients in food processor and process until fine. Add fragrance/essential oils drop by
drop while processing. To Use: place 1 - 2 Tbsp of mixture in palm and wet (water/hydrosol/floral
water) until paste-like. Gently, massage into skin and rinse well. Note: I use this on my skin daily
and modify as needed. Other additives could be: powdered lemon or orange peel, powdered
lavender buds, chamomile, calendula etc.

Jonobie April 23rd, 2003, 06:20 AM Does it have any benefits on the skin?
I used 3-4 chamomile tea bags along with a cup of vinegar and 1 teaspoon jojoba oil in a bath once. My skin felt really yummy afterwards, and I'd definitely do it again. Historically, chamomile is supposedly good for skin irritation (rashes, itchiness, etc), although I don't think they've been able to conclude that with scientific studies. Regardless, my bath felt really nice.
Cheers,
Jonobie
