View Full Version : rosemary, nettle herbs but sage powder?
smiles April 20th, 2003, 06:39 PM so i went to wholefoods today to help a friend buy BBB :D
and cudnt stop myself from looking around... to keep the money spending urge as minimum as possible, i bought dried rosemary, nettle and sage.
this is the friend who gawks at me being hair obsessed, so i told him that these herbs are to make me relax (twisted logic! ) and i'm going to make herbal teas  (did i say i drink it? ;) )
ok, now coming to my question - i can teas using the rosemary, nettle and will be able to filter it out.... but what can i do with sage powder
i dont think i have that thin filter :( and i dont have cheesecloth to put this and make tea. now what do i do?
i wont be able to use this in the rinse...will i?
and yes, one more question - can i add this to my herbal cleanser (shikhakai, amla, areetha, marshmallow) too.... if so, how much would be the recommended amount to add?

Fox April 20th, 2003, 11:34 PM I always rinse my vinegar mix out of my hair anyway. If you put all of your herbs into nearly boiling vinegar and let it steep for as long as possible, then strain it, you should have a fairly good filtered vinegar for use as a rinse. The other herbs will help catch the ground sage. Whatever is left, will be diluted with water, and then poured over your hair. I follow this will conditioner on the length... then a good rinsing. Nothing should be left in your hair then.
Another option is to find a tea ball or something else you can put the sage in before brewing.
Hope this helps some...
Karen April 21st, 2003, 06:29 AM i use old pantyhose in place of cheesecloth. also, I use those kneehighs you can get in 4-pack for a dollar.
you can buy cheesecloth in the fabric section of walmart.

When I want to filter out powdered herbs, I line my strainer with a coffee filter. I know some people have used sturdy paper towels for the same effect.
HTH,
Jonobie

Cowgal April 22nd, 2003, 03:00 AM Ooo! Put the Sage powder in the herbal mix! It won't be any harder to rinse out than the other stuff you're using and sage is sooooooo good on hair!
If you want a sage rinse, go to Whole Foods tea section and get some tea bags of Sage- they come in the Avita brand.
smiles April 23rd, 2003, 10:22 AM :D :D cool - i'll add to my herbal cleanser. oh my gosh! what all i've added to it now - amla, areetha, bringharaj, tulsi (basil), shikhakai - and now sage :D marshmallow works geat!
thanks Valerie!

Cowgal April 23rd, 2003, 10:48 AM i'll check out avita brand too.... but getting the loose powder is so less expensive :D
Oh yeah. Well that is true! It DOES make it easier though. You can get 24 (or more) tea bags for around $3... Avita brand.
Is your hair blonde? Sage might darken light hair...

i bought 2 OZ powder for $2.5 i think... tax inclusive. 24 tea bags for $3 sounds neat.  i can take it when i go on trips. i can steep it and microwave, let cool in the refriegrator for sometime and rinse :D
nope, mine is black, see signature :deal: i just love these emoticons :DD :DD and ya, i'd like to darken it more.... :D
btw how many tea bags do i need use for one rinse? i have 21.5 inch hair.
Cowgal April 23rd, 2003, 01:25 PM Oh. LOL!
Okay, I'll be careful to read people's signatures better! LOL!
Anyhow, it's Alvita... just checked the box.
I use 1 tea bag for my hair, 38 inches. And simmer it in about .5 to 1 cup of water. I use 4 different Alvita herbs: Rosemary, Nettles, Fenugreek, and Sage. Sometimes I will use a Rosemary and Nettle... but really, 1 tea bag is fine. They would be good for traveling. :D
smiles April 23rd, 2003, 01:36 PM ok, its alvita then.
dont mind about the signature thingie.. i just wanted to use that emoticon :D
is that fenugreek tea made out of powder of fenugreek leaves or fenugreek seeds.. i have tons of both at home :D yooohoooo, i can ry one more now!
this board is amzing... i learn so much everyday :D

Cowgal April 23rd, 2003, 02:47 PM You have fenugreek already? Great! It's made from the seeds. I grind the whole seeds in a coffee grinder first and then simmer them for about 10 minutes atleast. Let it cool, and pour that over your hair after you are done washing. DO get on your scalp- it's good for the scalp and hair. I use it as a final rinse and don't rinse it out. After pouring it in your hair, just wrap hair in a towel. (Forgot to mention to strain out the seeds before using! LOL)
smiles April 24th, 2003, 11:00 PM ya, i use it in my cooking, once in a while - the leaves as well as seeds. cool, i'll try it out.... i have lots of things to try on my hair now :D - thanks valerie!
