Just wondering who out there is a sci-fi geek? :rockerdud

I am a huuuge fan of Doctor Who (and did you know new shows are coming out in March??). I also like Red Dwarf.

I like the classic Star trek, and also loved Firefly (awesome, awesome, short lived sci-fi show!)

ALso like reading sci-fi...am now just getting into Asimov's stuff...

Read Lord of the Rings too (and just before the movies came out but I guess that is more Fantasy than Sci-fi).

Anyways, would love to hear some other sci-fi'rs and what you like, recommend, and if there is any good conventions you've been to.

I love sci-fi. We have every Star Trek episode (all series) and movie that's been released on DVD...
I love Asimov also (not Foundation really...kinda dry). I was afraid to see I, Robot, but I was so impressed with how they pulled it off! Centennial Man was another good Asimov-inspired movie.
Believe it or not, C.S. Lewis wrote some extremely imaginative sci-fi, his Space Trilogy.
There's a short story I was so obsessed with, I memorized it word-for-word: "The Man Who Lost The Sea," by Theodore Sturgeon. "Valley of Echoes" and "Icharus Montgolier Wright" (I'm not sure the middle name is correct) are also excellent, though I don't remember who wrote them. I love short stories.
I'll probably add to this post later...my brain isn't working lol. I honestly can't rave enough about sci-fi, and if you add fantasy into the mix, I'll never shut up.
ETA: I forgot about Highlander...luckily I have "Who Wants To Live Forever" on my playlist, and it reminded me.
I also love all of Ray Bradbury's books, plus the movie they made out of the Martian Chronicles.
I like the old "Planet of the Apes." The new movie is good, but in a totally different way.

I was just now browsing amazon.com for Harlan Ellison and Robert A. Heinlein books. Good stuff! I used to have dozens of them, but lent them out years ago and never got them back. :?

Norwescon is always a good time, for a bigger con. It's coming up at the end of March in Seattle. (I went to my first Norwescon when I was 17. Over half my life ago. Sigh.)

Yup...another sci-fi lover here!!! I grew up around my two uncles who were HUGE sci-fi fans so I got a big ol' dose of it as a kid...and loved every minute of it. I also really enjoy fantasy. I have so many fond memories as a kid of my uncles "education." They would sit me down and say "you have to watch this...it's important!!!" And of course it would be: Labyrinth, Star Trek movies, Alien, Doctor Who, Dark Crystal, Fire and Ice, Wizards, Star Wars, Dune...and on and on and on...hehe

Love Star Trek, and I swear Red Dwarf has got to be one of the funniest shows of all time. "Cat" trips me out!!!

Haven't yet began to read Asimov but my best friend loves it and wants me to start. I also wanted to read Raddix (not sure of the author) but it's my best friends fav. book and we always try to read each others fav books...just because!!!

My house has one entire room in it thats floor to ceiling, wall to wall books, mainly sci-fi and fantasy books...so I have no excuse to not read. Both my uncles had Beckers Muscular Dystrophy, and they could only really move their heads and hands/arms and were confined to their beds...so they read and read and read...and they liked me to read as well...or I'd lay on the floor and they'd read put loud to me...it was great fun!:rockerdud

I don't think of myself as a sci-fi geek but I'll watch it if DH has it on. Right now we're into Battlestar Galactica. It is very hard for me to accept Starbuck as a girl. I'm slowly getting used to it becuase I love how tough she is. But as a kid I watched the original and had the absolute hots for Apollo.
DH likes Star Trek Enterprise but I've missed a season and can't seem to get caught up.

I did meet George Takei though at an autograph opportunity; unfortunately I inadvertently insulted him! He was nice about it though.

I think that STE has been cancelled after this season...:wail: Is is the end of the line for Star Trek?

OH YES!!!!!!!!

We watch a LOT of Sci-fi and Fantasy (looking at our DVDs besides the kids stuff and 9 of 10 are sci-fi). Here is a partial list: Star Trek - all of them including Enterprise and it's vocal theme, Star Wars - well not the 'holy baby' part, Chronicles of Riddick- Vin is so cool, LOTR, Red Dwarf (DH LOVES THAT SHOW!!!!), Stargate, OLD BattleStar Gallactica, Piers Anthony's Xanth books, Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt books, Firefly (yes that was an awesome little show), Fifth Element, um, gee I can't think too well this early, but yes we like sci-fi.

WbC - if you liked Dirk Bennedict as the old Starbuck, you may want to go read an article by him about the new BSG. Dirk's opinion. (http://http://www.dirkbenedictcentral.com/home/articles-readarticle.php?nid=1) It is funny but will really open your eyes.

Yeah, DH is quite broken up about it. A station here just started carrying it a few months ago so we finally got to watch it again. Now they're cancelling it. DH seems to think if it was on another network it would survive. I think it should go to the sci-fi channel.

I'm a sci-fi nut, but more of a reader than a watcher. I love Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series, particularly the later books, where he's more mature, rather than the young hyperactive. I also like almost anything by Harry Turtledove.

I'm a sci fi fan, yet i'm picky. I don't like doctor who at all, love the sci fi channel. OUr friday night is spent watching stargate, stargate atlantis, and battlestar galactica. I love most of the star treks. Never really got into the new one, I think it coincided with another show. Love any type of sci fi movie. I really don't read sci fi,(since the child came 10 years ago,it seems i only read magazines, and anything on the computer.)lol

I have always LOVED Sci-Fi :rockerdud . Growing up, my family thought I was a bit odd. Then I met my DH and he, too liked it. There are a lot of classics on now that you can catch on the sci-fi and TV Land channels like: Lost in Space, Star Trek-TOS, Star Trek- TNG, and Quantum leap.

I've a big fan of: Star Trek-Enterprise, Strange World, Firefly, Battlestar G, Farscape (oh yea!) and Star Wars. I like to read a lot (former librarian) and am always looking for new Sci-Fi authors. It's great to see there are others here who love this genre!!!

Me three!! I absolutely love the new Battlestar Galactica. I do have to say that I guess I'm too young for the doctor who thing - don't think I've ever seen it. I like lots of SciFi/Fantasy movies and TV shows, as well as tons of books! Heinlein, Tolkein, McCaffrey, Rawn, Roberson, Martin, Niven, Zelazny, etc. I have a rather large library of books and most are SciFi/Fantasy. As for movies, I like pretty much all of them, even some of the ones that are so bad they're good. I liked the original Star Trek (movies and TV), but by the time enterprise came along I couldn't stand it anymore. Farscape had a couple of great seasons and a couple of what I thought of as highly drug induced plots that didn't interest me as much. Anyway, I could go on for chapters about how much of a SciFi geek I am, but I'll spare you.

ETA: I forgot Firefly! Why, oh why did they cancel this show? And I liked Buffy, too.

I don't consider myself a fanatic, but I'm a fan. My favorite Trek is The Next Generation, though my SO and I are working our way through the original series on DVD. I've recently discovered Farscape and love, love, love it, though I've only seen about half of the first season. Haven't seen the new Battlestar Galactica or Firefly. I got into Babylon 5 for a while, but I quit watching during the 4th season. One of these days I'll finish watching them--I think I got burned out on them.

As far as books, I adore David Weber's Honor Harrington books. :rockerdud :rockerdud :rockerdud I also really like the Tanya Huff's Torin Kerr books (Valor's Choice and The Better Part of Valor). I don't read much sci-fi, but these are exceptions.

I am, I'm also a fantasy fan. My son and I are huge fans of the Ender's Game books, our one dog is named after one of the characters. My user name comes from the Xanth series.

I'm one of the weird trekkies whose favorite of the series is Deep Space Nine. I also like the Star Wars Movies.

I love reading the old timey sci-fi mags, I like to collect old Analogs, Galaxy's etc.

HUGE scifi fan here, as some already know. :silly: One of the main reasons I started growing my hair out was because of different long-haired SF heroines, which is also what inspired me to start up my scifi hairstyles page.

As for shows, I love all five Star Treks, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the old Twilight Zone, the X-files, the old Battlestar Galactica (can't bring myself to watch the new one...they lost me when I heard Starbuck was going to be a girl), and I've seen a little Andromeda, Farscape, Quantum Leap, Outer Limits, Beyond Belief, etc.
For movies, I love Star Wars, the Trek movies (well, most of them), Independence Day (my first scifi movie), Frequency, Signs, Godzilla, Jurassic Park, Timeline, and more recently I, Robot and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
Bookwise, I read a lot of the Star Trek and Star Wars books a few years ago, and I love anything by Ray Bradbury, Douglas Adams, and Orson Scott Card. Some Isaac Asimov, Madeleine L'Engle, and Dune by Frank Herbert.

I also really like Dean Koontz's novels, which are sometimes sci-fi-ish and the show Lost, which also has sci-fi elements. I don't really count Tolkien as sci-fi either, but I've read just about everything he ever wrote. :inlove:

Ive been a Sci-Fi fan since the first Star Trek in the '60's when I was a kid. I like all the Star Treks, though the Original, TNG and Enterprise are my favorites. I also like the Friday nite lineup on Sci-Fi channel With the SG's and BG. I've read some Isaac Asimov (Foundation) and Nemisis, but otherwise haven't been much of a Sci Fi Reader yet. I liked all of the First Star Wars Movies and saw the first one of the new ones out a few years ago. DH is not much of a sci-fi fan, though. I want to see I, Robot -will have to rent that one.

Well, I have to say...Dirk has got a little....ummm, anger at the world. I agree with what he said about all the remakes. But I think the new BattleStar is fantastic drama!!

Is is the end of the line for Star Trek?
Well, I have read a few articles now that says it's toast. But hey! Doctor Who sucked bad in its final years and finally 15 years later it is coming back! (So, you just gotta wait for 15 years :misskim:

I don't like doctor who at all

Well, it is definitely an aquired taste  You just have to ignore the shaky sets, bad acting, and crappy special effects and pay attention to the really good stories!

Hmmmm, the plot thickens :writer: I personally know of two gals who have very long hair and they both like sci-fi

Whose hand is that?? Ahhhh, dancingbarefoot  And you are going to leave us in suspense as to which you like??

Sorry, this past week was really busy and I posted short, short comments.

Let's see... I'm a Star Trek fan, loved Star Wars since my uncle took me to seek The Return of the Jedi when it first came out in theaters, Isaac Asimov (ooh! the brain on that man!), Carl Sagan, Ray Bradbury, Stargate (but not the new Atlantis one. ugh!), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game!), tons of corny sci-fi from my youth. Oh, and all those ridiculous yet very enjoyable Godzilla movies. I'm sure I can think of more, but it's late and my brain is tired. Hehe.

I have agree with those who hate the new BSG. It's so... wrong! (And while we're on the subject, am I the only one who thinks half (at least!) of the crap on the Sci-Fi channel isn't even sci-fi? Terribly disappointing. They could do so much with that channel!)

Had such great hopes for Enterprise, but the writing has been just terrible. Plot lines that go on and on with no purpose or resolution. BORING! It's a shame, really, since I love the Star Trek world, too.

I am not a scifi nut.

I do not watch stuff like Stargate, Enterprise, Smallville, or other shows of that genre.

I did not get cable just so I could watch the Space channel.

I do not use words like frell, frack and others in normal conversations.

I have not named my children after the Masterharper of Pern or Callisto Prime.

I do not subscribe to any yahoogroups for scifi conventions.

I have not attended scifi conventions, especially not in costume related to a particular show.

I can not do the danish on each ear thang from Star Wars.

I have not named my children after the Masterharper of Pern or Callisto Prime.

Oh such beautiful names! Did you really?! :bowtome:

My obsession with Ms McCaffrey runs deep  It's my father's doing!! When I was younger he encouraged me to read her books because she so often writes about strong women. Actually most of those women have long, beautiful hair too.... chance or coincidence? :suspect: :D I know most of the stories backwards and forwards, yet I can't stop rereading them.

My family are all science types.... staying up until 11pm on Tuesday nights to watch Start Trek was a family event (that was the only time that Aussie TV stations screened it grrr :hatchet: ) I've been a bit upset with Star Trek in more recent years - Voyager got old so quick and we wont even talk about the travesty that is enterprise

I'm so happy to see that so many people in the US love Red Dwarf! It's a staple diet in our household, along with the goodies (Ok so they're not *exactly* science fiction despite being nerds!)

Like all good geeks, I have the requisite passion for HitchHikers Guide and all other things Douglas Adams... I'm a bit nervous that they'll mangle the movie. I can remember reading articles with him saying the movie was being made back in the early 90's, it's a shame that it didn't happen until after his death.

I will watch pretty much any sci fi movie, but I have issues with violence so often I don't enjoy the movie. I feel that a lot of really great stories are ruined with the requisite fighting. I guess this is why I prefer books...

ETA: Astroboy!! How could I forget the boy with the machine gun butt! I'm not too keen on the new version... I think I was so excited to hear the theme song after all those years, that when it started with the different theme song I just didn't give it a chance...

I'm a lot more like Ursula, in that I'm more into the literature than other media. I grew up without TV and to this day have never owned one. I'm familiar with most of the shows and have seen at least a few episodes of about oh...half of them, I'd say, but it's just not my thing as much as reading, my one true love. I usually focus on going to the conventions that have the authors I adore moreso than anything else, and have met several of them. Sometimes this is a good thing, and you realize that the author is awesome (Connie Willis) and sometimes this is a bad thing, and the author you like is a bit of an ass (*cough*Brust*cough*).

But my addiction is, like Ursula, Lois McMaster Bujold. I adore her novels beyond reason. Connie Willis is second and then comes many, many more. I'm not so hot on fantasy--so much of it is schlocky to me, but I love the older authors, C.L. Moore, for one. George MacDonald, Ursula K. Le Guin, and the young adult books of Madeleine L'Engle. A Swiftly Tilting Planet is still an absolutely magical book for me.

I don't care for the "fantasy cubes" you can buy today. In truth, I haven't given them much of a chance, but if a book doesn't grab me right away, or if it depends too much on old, tired plot elements, nah. I've had sort of a love-hate relationship with Marian Zimmer Bradley's work for a while, but hated the novel she wrote with Mercedes Lackey, who is a fabulous fantasy success, but... I even like some of her stuff, but... Sigh. I'm just really picky. I loved James P. Hogan's use of hard science in a lot of his early books, but the man is clueless about women and that totally gets in the way. I liked F.M. Busby's strong heroine character, however, even though she didn't totally ring true for me.

Anyway...the books are it. Never watched Battlestar whatsis, Red Dwarf or much of Star Trek. I was a huge Star Wars fan however, but I'm probably the first person out there who read the book before she saw the movie...

Whether it's books,movies or TV.
I'll watch any and all of it,I'm not to particular, although

You got me there - but in my defense, the (first three) movies came out before I learned to read. :toofers:

I think one reason I love Isaac Asimov stories is the wonderful imagination that he brews up. I've never seen any film versions of his stories, but I don't really need to - I can imagine them so vividly without. Other authors can do that, too, but I think he was a master.

LOL! Well, trust me, I wanted to see the movie first, but I was nine years old, lived out in the middle of nowhere, and had missed the family trip to the theater because I'd been out camping with my pony club. I had to wait years to see the movie. The novelization was ok, but the radio-drama they put out a few years later was excellent. I wish I still had my tapes.

My general take on movies vs. books is this: whatever came first is usually the best. The only instance where I've found the opposite was the movie version of Picnic at Hanging Rock totally blew the book away, simply by its stunning visuals.

they seem more like soap operas.
That's true but I don't mind too much.

I did mind that in STTNG, they never resolved the "Bluegill" story thread. That was the one where people in command were being parasitized by creatures that stuck a breathing tube out the back of the person's neck. At the end of the last episode on that topic, they said that a homing beacon was sent out, but no more was ever mentioned about the bluegills. At least not as far as I know...

I love sci-fi.... It's in my blood. When my mother was in the hospital after giving birth to me she told the doctor that as long as she got home in time to see Star Trek, everything would be fine.

I adore Firefly.

I'm nutty for the BBC radio version of the Hitchhiker's Guide - anyone else heard that one? I wish I knew where I could get it on CD. Very interested to see how the movie will turn out.

How could I forget Hitchhiker:inlove: ...I loved that book. I saw the teaser trailer for the movie on yahoo...it was very short but kinda amusing.

Yeah, I have heard of the BBC radio version. I have it on cassette(s) from ye olden days. I actually just found it in my house about 5 years ago...apparently one of my uncles had recorded it.

And I also can't believe I left out Quantum Leap. I was sooo addicted to that show when I was a kid. I remember it came on everyday 2X on like USA or something and then the new episodes would come on Wednesday nights...my entire week as a child was scheduled around Quantum Leap.

Also, I remember my mom crying when we moved to the Carribbean and she found out the we didn't get the channel that STTNG came on. She was one angry upset mommy...and no amount of sunshine and beatiful beaches could make up for it!!!

I am a true sci-fi fanatic. Every since I picked up a book of my brother's called "Nightmare Blue". A tale of how the world's last P.I. and an alien team up to save Earth from being the drug lab to the galaxy.

Lets see..

TV
ST:TOS - Kirk, Spock, McCoy. 'Nuff Said.
ST:TNG - The Return of Trek. HuZZAh!
ST: DS9 - Down and dirty Trek. Sisko punches out Q. Major space combat eps.
St: Voy - Finally a return to "boldly going where no one has gone before"
ST: Ent - Blech! Damm continuity nightmare.

BSG - Starbuck as a woman, and she still kicks ass.
Firefly - Didn't anyone at Fox look at how Buffy was in the ratings for season 1? Grrrrrr....must control fist of death.
SG-1 - Modern day humans go to the stars and blow stuff up real good.
Red Dwarf - Smeg is a part of my regular vocabulary.
Dr. Who - Thanks to that show I can figure out the plot of ANY TV show.
Space: Above and Beyond - Vietnam War in space.
Space 1999 - Don't leave nuclear waste on the moon. Very bad idea.

Movies....all of 'em.

Books
Way, way too many to list current favs are Harry Turtledove, Eric Flint, David Weber. Continuing favs included McCaffery, Tokien, Asimov, and Heinlein.

I've even taken a turn at writing. Wrote a short story called "First and Final War" about a mermaid avenger and started writing a ST:TNG story entitled "Starships and Dragons".

Hell, I'm even playing a free online strategy game called Space: Glory Through Conquest. Sci-fi nut? Not me!

the young adult books of Madeleine L'Engle. A Swiftly Tilting Planet is still an absolutely magical book for me

I love L'Engle, A Wrinke in Time, A Wind in the Door, The Arm of the Starfish. My sister and I used to sit and try "kything" with each other.

Ray Bradbury is a genius. I loved the Martian Chronicles, Farhenheit 451, I Sing the Body Electric, Dandelion Wine, Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Also a fan of Asimov's I, Robot, the book.

Star Wars. The Twilight Zone- Rod Serling was so talented, read stories by him and have almost all the episodes on DVD.

Star Trek, the original, and used to watch Enterprise. When I lived in Vegas, I would go to Star Trek: The Experience quite often. Neat displays, and museum, and would have drinks at Quarks bar, with Quark and various characters walking around in costume.

I liked F.M. Busby's strong heroine character, however...

And speaking of F.M. Busby ("Buz" to his friends and family), he died yesterday.

http://www3.caringbridge.org/wa/buz/history.htm

I feel pretty crushed. Even though he was local, I never met him. I wish now I had made a point to look him up at some local convention, just to tell him that I've completely worn my books about Rissa Kerguelen and Bran Tregare down to the spine. He wrote about strong women in a way that I've rarely seen, and about people who stop and think things through. In other words, he wrote exciting space opera about intelligent people.

I'm very sad. It sounds like he was in a lot of pain and was ready to go, but I greedily want my favorite writers to stay here and write forever. :(

Sigh.

I used to be an avid reader; now, most of my sci fi is on television. Tonight were three of my favorites in a row on the SciFi Network; Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and ... my fav ... Battlestar Galactica.

Recently I have enjoyed rediscovering Star Trek, which was on for the first time when I was young. I've been taping and watching all episodes.

I haven't done much reading lately in sci fi books, though I used to enjoy Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert H. Heinlein. Some conventions are listed on this site: http://www.heinleinsociety.org/

Another site on Heinlein: http://www.nitrosyncretic.com/rah/

Sci Fi has to compete with Japanese anime for viewing time, as I am a huge anime freak.

Also ... would you believe I have never read Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

Well, I didn't notice this thread because I haven't been online much because I finally borrowed Firefly dvds and have been watching them constantly for weeks... (and I'm trying to postpone returning them so I can pretend I'm not going to go out and buy my own for a little while longer). Anyone who hasn't seen this, go... procure... it somehow, because it is even better than I was expecting (and my expectations for it were high).
I use "frell" in everyday conversation, and my friends who haven't even seen Farscape have started saying it too. I love Farscape more than Firefly. In spite of and sometimes because of the crack episodes/season 4. Ah, Farscape. :cloud9:
Not much for the Stargates and Battlestar Galactica; I'm still bitter because they have Farscape's time on Fridays. And when Lexx was on after Farscape... and however weirded out I had been by Farscape, I could not help but stare blankly and think "What the frell?" at Lexx. Because that was just... weird.
I haven't read much sci-fi. More fantasy (Tolkien, some Marion Zimmer Bradley). I wasn't interested in it when I was younger and now that I am there's so much of it I'm not sure where to start. Love Hitchhiker's Guide though. Hehe. Maybe I should just start alphabetically... hey that's a good idea...

Hi all!

Just another sci-fantasy fan checking in. :)

I've been reading the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. Harry's a wizard (listed as such in the yellow pages, no less), living in modern day Chicago, who seems always to get sucked into paranormal private investigations of one sort or another. Somehow he survives, but the adventure is in the details. I mention them because a friend recommended them, and I had trouble finding them in the bookstore. (Only one of the chain type stores in my area had them.) Well worth seeking out if you like hard boiled detective mysteries AND science fiction.

I've been trying to get into BattleStar Gallactica mostly because I'm want to prepare myself for life without any sort of Star Trek, or anything by Joss Whedon except in reruns or on DVD. Somehow Farscape and Stargate just aren't my cup of tea. (And Red Dwarf is only shown at truly weird hours that I can never find in the listings. Sigh.)

I've been a huge sci-fi geek since my dad took me to see Star Wars in the theater when I was FOUR YEARS OLD. I was soooo warped by that experience. LOL I wanted to marry Han Solo and Darth scared the living crap outta me.

Anyway, I love sci-fi but I have read so much of it in my life that I haven't read a lot of it in the last several years. For classics, I love H.G. Welles and Heinlein, but I'll read anyone, really, who has a good idea. I love both hard science fiction and the paranormal stuff. I like some of the fantasy stuff, but I find myself preferring actual historicals for my sword stories.

Anyway, I highly recommend for those of you who want a scifi twist, Nora Robert's "In Death" series. She is a romance writer, but this is a major departure from the romance formula for her. She's on like book 14 or 15 now, and there hasn't been a bad one yet (some are not as good as others, but none have been downright bad). The main character is Eve Dallas, a cop in the future who doesn't remember much about her abusive childhood. Her specialty is catching the real nasties: the psycho killers. Anyway, it's a bit scifi, a bit cop, a bit romance, and Eve kicks major booty. Best if read in order, too, folks. So yeah that's my "recently read" recommendation for the harder stuff. For paranormal, I absolutely adore "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley. Beautifully written, and the main character is just smashing. Be prepared to crave cinnamon rolls, though. She's a baker. :D Man, maybe I need to read that one again...

I'm definitely a sci-fi/fantasy nut. I love all the Star Treks that have come out since the original, The new Battlestar Galactica is interesting. Takes some getting used to some of the characters being different from the original but I think it's gonna work :D. I'm a HUGE Charmed fan and can't wait for Season 2 DVD whenever that comes out heeehee.

My most favorite author in the galaxy is Anne McCaffrey. I've read her entire Dragonriders of Pern line three times all ready, I ADORE Acorna, and look forward to Acorna's Children this year. It can't come out fast enough for me ^_^. I'm hoping Todd can definitely carry on in Anne's path with the Pern series. Her The Rowan series ROCKED too.

The only tv series I've cared for is Babylon 5, which is natural considering my interest in religion.

Huge SF and fantasy fan here. My father read me The Hobbit when I was five, and quickly followed with Heinlein's Red Planet. That was only the start. L'Engle was one of my favorites for a long time. I've read and enjoyed tons of SF since I was tiny - I wouldn't have had it any other way. It's in the blood. My granddad was hugely into SF, and my dad was into SF and fantasy.
As far as TV goes, we watched STTNG as a family. I adored Data as little kid. Right now I like the Twilight Zone (the old one). I'm counting that one as SF.

I feel badly for not having mentioned this to anyone who may have missed out on Season One of Battlestar Galactica, because they are re-running the entire Season One and Episode One, called "33," was on last Friday night, April 8. I wish I had posted this earlier!

At any rate, Episode 2, Water, will be next Friday night, April 15.

Battlestar is one of those shows best watched from the very beginning, but I believe you can start at Ep 2 and catch on quickly.

I encourage anyone to give this series a try. It's currently my sci-fi favorite. Season Two starts in July, so they are being great to re-run Season One for any newcomers who want to jump on board!

And for those of you who think Starbuck has to be a man and can't understand how it could work with her being a woman ... well, you just have to see it. Starbuck kicks ass.

The actress playing Rose irritates me to no end, but verdict's still out on Christopher Eccleston. Guess it doesn't matter, since he quit, but still don't know what to make of him as the Time Lord. He's very attractive in way that other Doctor Who actors haven't been - let's face it, most of them are pretty goofy-looking - but I don't think he has the right demeanor for Doctor Who. He's deadly serious one minute, then grinning madly & trying to be funny. Doesn't seem to work. And yet... I like the eye candy.

I think I like him better in his serious roles (Elizabeth, 28 Days Later, Shallow Grave).

Don't have any idea, but the bad thing about it is they will prolly have to use up another re-generation to cover it, unless they can think of something else to account for his new face. Time Lords only get 12 as I remember, and the Ninth Doctor is not all that far away from 13, and presumeably the end of the series. (Unless they think of a way around that! :) )

Whedon confirmed for Dragon*Con. Joss and co continue to barnstorm across the USA in their efforts to promote Serenity. This time they will be in Atlanta in September at one of the largest conventions around.

Press release via email and confirmed by Dragon*Con:

"Dragon*Con Announces Joss Whedon Added To Guest List

Due to the efforts of John Tackett and Pat Henry, we are pleased to announce that Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity and the upcoming Wonder Woman movie has been confirmed as a guest for Dragon* Con 2005.

At this time, in regards to programming of Joss, he is there to discuss Firefly/Serenity and his upcoming projects . At this point we do not know if he will be able to discuss his past projects. As we get more information we will let you know.

We are also bringing in Adam Baldwin, Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin from Firefly / Serenity as well."

Funny: Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett
Real wonderfully good with deep characters: George RR Martin, Robin Hobb
Very good: Sara Douglass, Anne McCaffrey, Cecilia Dart-Thorton, Diana W Jones, Kate Forsyth, Sarah Zettel

Anyone else here who loves them?

We are out there, in very large numbers even, we just hide in our own little boards and forums. Some of the conventions I've been to have actually had far more women attending then men!

And I love Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchet. I really hope that the Hitchhiker's Guide the Galaxy film that comes out next Friday is a decent adaptation!

Oooh so next Friday I expect to see a new thread about the Hitchhiker movie with reviews from everyone :)

It looks very, very good. I can't wait!

There are more fantasy fans than you think after the hype of the Lord of the Rings movies, Harry Potter etc.

My favourites are the books of George R. R. Martin and Tad Williams.

2 of my 4 favorite authors! the other 2 being Guy Gavriel Kay and Orson Scott Card. If you like the first 2, then please check out the second 2 as well. I swear they are great writers! I like Card's "Alvin Maker" series better than his other stuff, but he definitely wrote a lot more than just "Ender'sGame"

I'm a bit late in on this thread, but I love sci-fi (films work for me better than books for this genre): Star Trek (NG, Voyager mostly. Disliked DS9), Babylon 5, Star Wars and stand alone sci-fi films, i.e. I, Robot, are also great. Yes, I even love Independence Day. Looking forward to Fantastic 4. Heaving at the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy film - URGH - the books were FAR superior.

As for fantasy, I think LotR is just brilliant. The films are AMAZING - my favourite of all time. I'm also squealing over the Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe movie - the trailer looks brilliant. I just wish we'd get a movie about R.A. Salvatore's Drows. Mmmmmmm.

Do the Harry Potter movies count as fantasy? If so, add them to the list too ;)

Not bothered with Dr Who though (yes, I'm bad).

Oh yeah, me.

My bedroom has enough bookshelves to accomodate 36 linear feet of books--and they are full of SF/Fantasy (okay, there's mystery novels too - but it's mostly SFF.)

I'm stitching a long sampler that says, "Of course you don't have enough book space. Everybody is out of book space. If you're not short on book space, you're probably not worth knowing." Every room in this house except for the bathroom has at least one bookshelf in it, and this is a house that has a room set aside specifically as a library!

We got four bookshelves last christmas.

They weren't enough.

And it's mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Currently I'm watching Babylon 5 on DVD... I'm on season three.

I'm wearing my B5 tshirt right now. <G> I was involved in TNG fandom for several years, and it was a blast, especially the cons and zines. I have a soft spot for Highlander as well, and am very much looking forward to Serenity.

Oh, yes. Yes.
I had a phase when I'd read anything science-fiction. Now I'm choosing more, but still it's one of my favorites. Say Clarke, Asimov, Lem, Bradbury, Card... (and Douglas Adams, of course). I can do some fantasy, but I discriminate more there (love Gaiman, love Pratchett). I consider Tolkien practically mainstream :) .
My sister got me into TNG when I was small, since then I got hooked on B5, liked DS9 and classic, and Highlander was a guilty pleasure.

I am also a scifi fan - Farscape, SG1, Star Trek - all of them, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica and more.
I am volunteer staff for Toronto Trek and do promotions.
You have Gatecon coming up - should be good.

I grew up reading science fiction; Heinlein's work was fun! (And I have to admit being greatly amused at his contradicting what some academics said about his work, I'll have to hunt that down again.) I'm going to have to go back through this thread and jot down some authors I've missed.

Just found the thread. I love sci-fi and I've been recently converted to Doctor Who ,the last series is awesome and I love Christopher Eccleston ,pity he didn't sign for another year.I had never watched it before so this is the first season I've watched ( well downloaded actually since it doesn't air here  )

Love Star wars (not much the new films though) Star Trek,Star Gate Atlantis just to name a few

Hey... where has this thread been?

I am definitely a sci-fi/fantasy geek! LOTR and Star Wars are my top ones, in fact I belong to a SW fan force chapter. I also love B5, and I read a LOT of fantasy.

One of my fellow fan force members is also a serious Dr. Who-vian, and he's trying to convert the rest of us.

Does anyone go to conventions?

Big Sci-Fi geek here. Star Trek probably tops my list, but I also love LOTR, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Red Dwarf...

Moorglade, my roommate and I have vowed to go to a convention someday. There aren't too many in the Seattle area. We might have to head down to CA.

San Diego Comic-Con is supposed to be really good, although I haven't been myself. There's also one in Oregon called Orycon - I think it's in November, if it still exists.

Myself - I stick mainly to the east coast ones. The biggest one I go to is Dragon*Con in Atlanta, which is usually Labor Day weekend. Huge con. Huge! And so much fun!

I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuuge sci-fi dork... I mean geek... I mean fan!
If my username didn't give it away my favorite is B5, yes I even have the cheesy ringtone for my phone. =p

Dr. Who! One of the shows from when I was a kid that got me hooked, I was never much into the original Star Trek but I loved Dr. Who. I made one of those scarves last year for a friend of mine who you would've thought I gave him the key to Fort Knox, he is nuts about that thing, wears it everywhere, thrives on the attention (it's a huge conversation starter with strangers) and he sends me pics of him wearing it just about everywhere. Cracks me up! Sure it helps that he resembles the character...

I love just about all the characters on B5 - it was so well cast, part of what made it such a great show. Ivanova was one of my hair idols. And of course I loved Marcus. But my favorite (and my DH's) is still Zathras. And Zathras. But mainly Zathras! :grnbiggri

I was so sad to find out the actor who played him, Tim Choate, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2004, only a few months after Richard Biggs passed away. That was such a bad year for B5...

I adore Sci Fi. B5 and Firefly are two of my all-time favorite series. I read tons of Sci Fi as well. I am a fellow lover of William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. "Count Zero," by Gibson, has the best first page of all time! :rockerdud
I also adore C.S. Freidman and Octavia Butler. I own thousands of books. They are falling off of shelves, overflowing from boxes, and filling closets all over my house! One of my favorite series ever has been out of print for years. I don't even know the author's name, so it's impossible for me to find. :wail: The first book was called, "The Man Who Never Missed." If anyone out there knows the author's name, please tell me!

Also Star Wars, The War of the Worlds (1950's version), the Thing (1950's version), all the X-Men, The Lord of the Rings, and a whole bunch more, I can't remember all of the them right now, will have to go look. We're seriously considering collecting the Harry Potter movies as well.

Sci-fi is my favorite genre of entertaiment

I'm a voracious sci-fi reader.

I'm re-reading David Weber's Honor Harrington Series now. I'm up to Flag in Exile. I'm saving the new one (At All costs) till I read up to it. My husband says I'm a masochist--I just loooove the anticipation. The scary thing is that I can name the books--in order (it won me $5 once).

1 On Basilisk Station
2 The Honor of the Queen
3 The Short Victorious War
4 Field of Dishonor
5 Flag in Exile (Honor with long hair)
6 Honor Among Enemies
7 In Enemy Hands
8 Echoes of Honor
9 Ashes of Victory
10 War of Honor
11 At all Costs

Babylon 5 was my favorite Sci-Fi series
Dr Who is still a passion
Loved every single Star Trek Show (Original, Generations, Enterprise, Voyager, DS9) in that order
Star Wars--we won't mention the number of times I saw it when it first came out

lots and lots of others

I'm a scientist who's obsessed with the science of hair, addicted to Celestial Mechanics, married to a physicist, worked for JPL for many years-----could there ever be a doubt.

I liked the first set of spinoffs of Trek, then enjoyed Patrick Stewart's tenure, and then they lost my interest. or I had to go to school. or something, lol

Highlander was excellent if you ignored all but the first movie. They did a good job I thought.

Firefly is excellent! Serenity is excellent! I'm hoping they go nuts and do another even though we'll be missing one *cry*

I enjoyed several of Heinlein's books, he blathers on sometimes, but I liked the books that had the long-lived family in it, with an emphasis on learning.

I like the freedoms taken in sci-fi and sci-fantasty, that the writers take more liberties than is acceptible in many societies and the reason that they can do it is precisely because they're speculating / extrapolating into the future.

These programs are all thought-provoking and that's why (I think) we like them.

Sci-fi rocks! I read alot and sci-fi is up there. I particularly like sci-fantasy.

Also, I love the new Battlestar Galactica on the (what else) SciFI channel.

I was introduce to sci-fi by Piers Anthony novels and Sci-fantasy by Anne McCarthy (sp?) in high school when I had to be out quite abit due to mono (ughhh). Good think I love to read.

I agree with blue nant about the freedom in these genres.

Define fanatic.

I am a huge sci-fi fan.

I volunteer for Toronto Trek, getting the word out to Yahoo groups on the net re guests and the odd contest.

I have not done anything in that regard for a while.

I remember the original Dr.Who - liked it then - there were several Doctors and assorted companions. I only watched the new one once - pretty good.

I love Star Trek - pretty much all of them, including the movies, DS9 not so much.
I loved B5 and really loved Farscape - my all around favorite - out there!
I currently watch SG1 and Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica regularly.
I remember and watched the now referred to as the classic Battlestar Galactica - I appreciate both - the new one is much grittier and edgy

I loved Dune - the movie and Mini Series
I also liked the the original Planet of the Apes - the sequels not so much.
I am a sucker for futuristic stories that are well written.
