View Full Version : Am I to old?
Nitsa April 16th, 2003, 03:59 AM Let me finish the quesiton. Am I to old to get a tattoo?
I already have one somewhat large tattoo that is on my left shoulder. I have had it for 18 years and still like it a lot.
Somewhere in the back of my mind the thought of getting another one has been floating around the last few years.
Well, yesterday I spent an hour at a local parlor looking over all choices.
I finally came up with two that I can blend together, taking a design from one and replacing the flowers on it with flowers from another etc. It is very pretty and delicate. I am thinking about having it put on my lower back.
I was very happy with my choice. The man photo copied them for me so that I could bring them home and show my hubby and my daughter before I have it done.
Well, my kids(18 and 20 years old) think it is cool and have even offered for it to be a mothers day gift but hubby thinks I am crazy.
His exact words were that he thinks I am to old. Imagine that :D
He said that if I was 20 he could see it but he didn't think that women in their 40's go out and get tattoos. I don't agree with him, but it did make me begin to wonder.
What do you think? I would really like honest opinions and don't worry because I will listen to you all and then just do what I want to do in the end but curosity has gotten the best of me as to how people really do feel.
Brenda April 16th, 2003, 04:04 AM You're only as old as you feel...my friend, Kathy, just went out and got another tatoo and her navel pierced as a 50th birthday present to herself.
I'd say if you want to do it, go for it :)
JennaPea April 16th, 2003, 04:10 AM Hi Nitsa! I'm about to turn 48 and just got my 9th tattoo this past New Years. I'm afraid that I don't go by the 'your too old' rule very often! If I did, I would NEVER have any fun!!! :D

I think women who have a successful marriage, two grown up kids and have lived past 40 and grow their hair long and want tattoos have the right to do whatever they please ;)
My Mum is 59, and in the last couple of years suddenly started going to gigs and clubs and festivals, which many of her friends believe she is too old to do. She ignores them and goes out and has fun :)
I seriously believe that you are never too old to do what makes you happy. Even if no-one else is doing it (and that just isn't true of mid-age and tattoos any more), then so what? You are your own person, so if you are sure, then why on earth not? After all, how many times have we as a community heard that we are too old to have long hair? :)
KajiKodomo April 16th, 2003, 04:26 AM I don't think you can ever be too old for a tattoo....my mom got her last one a few years ago and she's 40 now......and she's thinking about getting another one..you're never too old for anything...well, except the children's menu.... ;) Tattoos aren't just for 20 year olds.....
Amazon April 16th, 2003, 04:31 AM I still want my first one and I will get it (when I can make up my mind on what I want) and I am 42. :)
A little bit of info for you.
My friend is a mortician and she was working on this elderly woman, about 90 or so, and when she turned her over to do something at her back she found a heart tattoo on one of her butt cheeks.
I don't believe that woman thought she was too old.....and if anyone told her so she probably would have told them to kiss her tattoo. ;)
Go for it if it is what YOU want!! :)
Hugs.

terri April 16th, 2003, 06:00 AM Before you do anything, you might want to make sure that your age is the real issue here. There is a fine line that those of us that have significant others walk, in trying to balance how we wish to manage our appearance and doing small things appearance wise to show our spouse that we care about them. Hair and tattoos are two areas where, I have at times, carefully considered my husbands discomfort with a potential grooming/appearance issue before making my own decision.

I agree with that 100% and should have stated that. However, it really didn't come to mind when she said she already had a tattoo. Sorry about that. I still feel if it's something you want to do though, it is your body, you should do it.
Mariah April 16th, 2003, 03:14 PM Most people would believe that after 40 you're too old for long hair too...but just today I saw a STUNNING woman with long, white hair...the hair made her look 20 years younger, even if it was white! so it just goes to show
Teechia April 16th, 2003, 04:27 PM I got my first tattoo in 2000. I was 42 at the time. I don't think you are ever too old for anything.

(haven't grown up, never plan too)
Teacherbear April 16th, 2003, 04:45 PM Do what you want!
There must be some other reason (other than age) that your hubby isn't liking the idea . . . at least that's my first thought. Maybe ya'll can talk about it. Then you do what you feel is best for you.
Mark April 17th, 2003, 04:21 PM I got a couple of tattoos for my 30th birthday (which was a few years ago) ..lol To coin a WHO line ( Hope I die before I get old) ;)
Dispatcherbert April 17th, 2003, 04:38 PM I concur with Teacherbear that you maybe need to talk it out with your husband and see if that's the real issue.
That said, I've never heard anything more absurd than saying that you're too old to get a tattoo at any age! An old friend of mine bought her mom one for Mom's 60th birthday because Mom wanted one so bad. I'm going to be 37 in a week and I have five. Who knows if I'll get anymore as I get older.
It sounds to me as if you've thought it out and have come up with something tasteful. I say, "Go for it!"
Let us know what you decide.
wtchmel April 17th, 2003, 05:41 PM I think age is a state of mind. You may be forty, but i''m sure in your mind you don't feel like that. I know the older I get, I feel young, and when I look in the mirror, it's not the same person i am in my mind.Does that make sense? I look older then I feel. My father got his first tattoo at 55, it was a bday present from me and my sister.
Nitsa April 18th, 2003, 02:21 AM Wow, I didn't expect so many responses to this question.
Alot of good points made. Hubby is kinda teasing a little about it now. I think it may have been just a shock to him. I tend to do that a lot to people, I don't know why :D
I think I am going to go and have it done the week after Easter.
I have two days off in a row and I think that will be a good time.
And yes Witchmel, that makes perfect sense to me. :D
