View Full Version : I'm new here, an introduction...

Catia

Hello everybody ! :flowers:

I was trying to wait to introduce myself until I had a full length picture of my hair to post, but alas, I am impatient.

I have been lurking here since March (when I purchased my first computer) and have learned sooooo much since then. I have had long hair all my life, but never gave much thought to the art of nurishing it.

My mother was raised in a Mennonite Church, and one of the teachings that stayed with her was the preservation of uncut- hair (thankyou mom). But I have to say that, as far as honoring one's hair, that is as far as it went. Hair is vanity, and to be hidden away when of age, except for your husband in private. So I think that any (perceived) extra care given to hair was lumped into the vanity sin wagon as well. Ironically I think the secular world sees extremely long hair as obscene vanity in a way too (just my paranoid veiw perhaps). For example, I have grown up listening to girls discuss products and styling but have always felt it would be obnoxious for me to join in. I'm getting to indulge in all that fun beauty talk I feel I missed out on -- only, of the natural, healthy variety -- MUCH BETTER!

Anyway, here is my long hair journey....
My Mother knew the long hair basics, comb from the bottom up, wash infrequently. A very good place to start, but then as an uninformed highschooler I started to experiment with my hair color...blond,red,black...you know the story. Somehow I didn't go bald and by graduation my hair was thick enough at the ends it still looked good down, and fell to the middle of my calves. But haircolor was nothing compared to inadequate diet. I had dieted consistently since the age of eleven on Weight Watchers, subsequently losing 100lbs. But at the age of 20, I did a high protein, low/no carb diet and lost more than anything, 1/2 my hair. Good vitamins stopped the shedding but not my insanity. I have continued extreme dieting in the 7 years since (but never low carb again, thankyou very much) And while I avidly consume any health and nutrition literature I can get my hands on to make the perfect diet, a person just has to eat a certain amount consistently for optimum health, hence my hair has rebounded some in thickness but nowhere near the fistfull it was prior to age of 20  and so........ let me conclude this lengthy post by saying this board has been such a blessing in my life if for no other reason than it has given me a chance to refocus on something positive and give me a breather from my eating addiction. I'm happy to have found such a supportive and educated bunch. :inlove:

Hello Catia! Welcome!

It sounds as though you had a great start with your hair. It is unfortunate that hair care was considered vanity in your past. I do believe you are right about people thinking today that long hair is vain in today's world. The way I see it is that its no more vain than standing in the mirror for hours curling, teasing and spraying. I believe that long hair is a glory to God and that we are BLESSED to have long hair and since we are blessed with it, we should take the best care of it as possible! I'm glad to see that you are willing to take a step forward to take care of you hair. There is a LOT to be learned here! I hope that you can post pictures of you hair soon, I can't wait to see it!

I did forget to mention current length didn't I --durr-- I did write 72 inches in my profile, but that is really just a guess adding in my height. It lays about 5-6 inches on the ground but it is very thin, so you would never guess it. I usually wear it in a braid to my waist then roll up the rest of the length at the end kind of like a bowtie.

Welcome Catia!

Your hair sounds great. I too hope you can share a picture soon.

This board is great, there is a lot of support for hair and most everything else you can think of to talk about.

Michigan? What part? There are a few members up that away and gatherings are planned occassionally.

Thank you for the intro.

Gosh, you guys are so sweet! :blushing:

My Mom took a full length picture of me about two weeks ago after a lotus powder treatment, but I have been waiting for her to use up the roll of film since. I guess it's time to take about ten more cat pictures.

Irishred - "The sticks" would be the most appropriate answer, followed by Western Michigan.

Shady - Thankyou, my grandmother's name was Catia, but it was actually pronounced katcha, so I don't think "Catia" is the correct spelling. Her name had never been written down so we never found out the right spelling. She was German, living in Russia -- anyone have an idea of the correct spelling?

Well, it could be "Katja" . Its a german/dutch name.

Hello Catia and welcome! Even if your hair is a bit thin at the ends right now good care over a period of time should allow it to thicken up. You certainly already have a headstart over many of us with the length you're at. :)

Welcome to the boards, Catia. I've been missing a whole lot of welcomes due to being gone for awhile, but I just happened to catch yours! Also, I'm yet another eager member who can't wait to see a pic of your hair, it sounds positively lovely. I'm sure you'll have a great time here....welcome again! :waving:

alexnl - That looks appropiate, would it by any chance be short for a name similiar to Catherine?

Bingo. It's Catherine in English, Katharina in German, Katja in Russian (but nowadays widely used in Germany as well).
So if your grandma was a German living in Russia her name was most probably Katharina and she got called Katja in Russia.

Hi Catia:

At one of the other sites on the net (Floor Length Hair Club) you would fit right in, lots of floor length ladies there.

Even if it is thin, your hair sounds very pretty and I am sure is indeed a glory to you. Just be careful about extreme dieting! BTW, does this mean the Atkins diet can cause hair loss??? YIKES!

Glad to see you here and would love to see a pic of your hair also.

You GROW girl:)

Much love,

God Bless,

The pronouncing of Catia would be Katya in German. When I went to school we had a girl who was from Poland and her name was spoken Katcha too...I think she wrote it Kacia with a little sign on the c I cannot show with my PC
