View Full Version : I need t'get rid of some these darn leaves!

Faolin Ruadh
July 27th, 2004, 12:39 PM
Ok ok. So I have been going over and over whether not I should post this for weeks. I finally decided to just do it. These things are fun to do, and I am really burning up money getting supplies to make them. In order to afford my hobby, maybe I should get some cash back, eh? If I get a reply, great, if not, than I've lost nothing.

So. If your interested and not of the type inclined to fashioning your own hair toys, have I got something for you. I need to get rid of this stuff or my boyfiend 'll go crazy (supplies everywhere)

I can make these things any color you like, any leaf, any feather, anything you can come up with that's possible.

Some examples of things that I have made previously-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/feather4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/bright_orange_leaf.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/wonderlysleaf.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/feather3.jpg

Maybe these'll give you a feeling for it.

They are a sturdy leather, painted in waterproof/ fade resistant high quality acrylic. They come with the hand fashioned copper stick. I charge $22 each, plus shipping. It takes me one day to produce each with adequate supplies at the ready. I may need to stock up again, though.

PM me if interested.

I'm definitely interested in getting a leaf, I just don't have the money right now. Hopefully in a few weeks I will. I think they're just so gorgeous.

I really, really like the feather ones . You did a fantastic job! However, I only set aside a certain amount for hair toys and such a month and have reached my limit for this month already. (hehe, i'm so addicted to the darn stuff so I have to do it this way or I'll end up living in a shack with nothing but hairtoys and shoes.. :ponder: hmm would that be so bad...) I'm bookmarking this thread so I'll pm you in a week or two.

OMG. I just swore I need to quit spending $$, and here you go tempting me. The fall leaf is fantastic! I love it!!!!! As soon as I am able and can afford to spend, I will be hunting you down...LOL.

ME TOO! ME TOO!

Those look really cool Faolin Ruadh. I will be looking for you as soon as I can save up my $$$$ hair allowance. I love the Green leaf and the feather w/ green, then I love most anything green.

Qs: have you havd any problems with the copper stick causing static? Also, you gave no size reference so how big are these?

July 28th, 2004, 06:48 AM
Well, anytime you would like to buy one, I'll be here so there's no rush.

As for the size... I make them to fit really, but it seems the average size is 5"x3", and the stick average size is a little over 5". But I have made a few bigger or smaller depending on what the buyer wants.

As for static, well, I haven't noticed any static. I never even occured to me there would be static. I suppose, maybe in the dead of winter, possibly. I wouldn't imagine it being much different than any other metal hair toy, really.

Oh yes, the pictures are roughly actual size. Like I said, they can be any size you need :flower:

Oh yes, and sorry to tempt you  Temptation is what got me doing all these things in the first place so I feel you pain!

OOOO you're bad. Now I have to get one (well 2 ) of these. Can you make the leaf colors different? I lik e the green one but i was kinda looking for a burgundy one . KInda like those leaves that turn burgundy/yellow in the fall? LMK As to ordering I'll have to get back to you in a couple of weeks. They look very nice, great job.

Those are really gorgeous! I don't buy leather, though, so if you ever play around with pleather or any of those other alternatives, do post your results!

I love the leaves!

Faolin Ruadh
July 28th, 2004, 10:23 AM
Yup, I can make it any combination of colors you could possibly dream up. I am an illustrator by trade, and I have a vast colection of paints.

As for pleather... hmmm. I may have some laying about. I'll have to do an experiment to see if it works, it doesn't have the same properties as leather. It'll take some trial and error.

I also ran out of money for this pay check, but if you could make one like this http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/looknorthnecumbria/weather/calendar_competition/october/images/autumn_leaf_elaine_stringer_calvert_470.jpg I'd seriously have to think about an order soon.

Faolin Ruadh
July 28th, 2004, 11:44 AM
OMG AmberBella! That is a BEAUTIFUL leaf! I'm seriously excited to make this. What kind is it?

Yeah, no problem. I'll make it for you. I'll start right away and set it aside for you for whenever you're ready.

If it turns out you can't buy it after all for whatever reason, I'm sure someone else will be happy to take it off my hands. So it's no big deal at all.

Everyone who would like a leaf 100%, just PM me your color preference, type of leaf, size preference (if applicable) and all that kinda stuff so I can keep records of you and keep up with giving everyone exactly what they want. If you have pictures to send or post, I welcome them :inlove:

Ok cool! If y'all be so kind as to just PM me your preferences if you have specific ideas in mind (so I can print out a sheet to take to the store of how much supplies I need to get). Otherwise, I will just write down what you've said you like in your posts, if that's OK

No clue what kind of leaf it is, but it IS beautiful isn't it. I love the little reminants of green and the brilliant color of it.

Living in L.A. I really miss Upstate NY's autumn and this would be such a lovely way to have Fall around me.

Do you have any pictures of a slide in action so we can see how it looks in hair? Is there any way to make one end of the stick a little more pointy for easier insertion?

Faolin Ruadh
July 28th, 2004, 03:58 PM
Yeah, it can be made pointier. I actually made it rounded because I am paranoid of being poked. But if you want pointier, yeah, no problem. It's actually probobly less work making it pointier.

A leaf in action... the only ones that I've kept are the ones designed for my less abundant and thinner hair, but it'll still give you a good idea of the scale...

Here are some examples of how I use them on my hair-

Cascade

Low Pony
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/lowpony.jpg

Twist thingy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/FaolinRuadh/twist.jpg

I'm sure you can think of many more ways to use it than I can. Beyond "ponytail", updos are fairly new to me. Personally, I prefer to wear more muted colors but the orange is a nice change.

wonderlywroughte

Just wanted to say that the orange one there looks really really good with your hair color!

Elora
July 28th, 2004, 06:35 PM
Oh. I want one!

Is there any way to estimate what "size" they should be, or can they be "one size fits all"?

Now I have to decide what color! aaah. They're all so pretty.

Faolin Ruadh
July 28th, 2004, 07:54 PM
I like to measure the diameter of your ponytail, and use that as a guide as to be sure you can use the slide in as many ways possible. Say your ponytail has a diameter of 3", I will make the leaf 5", in order to have 3" beteween the two holes to accomodate all your hair. But that's just a generalisation.

If you have no preference as to size and whatnot, the leaf I am shown wearing is the "one size fits all". It's a pretty standard size for a slide.

Thanks, Wonderly! I wasn't sure if it was nice on me or not.

Those slides look beautiful in your hair and I have to add the curtain behind you is a stunning shade of green with your coloring. If you don't have any clothes in that color, you totally should!

I want a leaf so badly! I need to wait until the end of summer though, assuming you'll still be making them then.

Wonderly, that looks beautiful in your hair!

I think I want a maple or oak type leaf, orangey in the middle but edged in a burgundy/wine type color. I've also been trying to think how a willow leaf could be made big enough to work without losing the shape. I can't buy anything until September, but if a willow slide could be made, I would absolutely buy at least one. If you could make a raven-black feather slide, I would have to get one of those, too. Okay, I see September's hair budget slipping away already!

This slide will be a little more slender and delicate looking than the other kinds of leaves. Is this good for you?

Faolin-
First of all, I must say that your hair is gorgeous!

And the leaf slides are very nicely done. I like the attention to detail and how you handle the graduation of coloring.

I would love to purchase a willow leaf cluster in a silvery green or a maple leaf with earth tones and red. Please let me know what you need so I can place an order:)

Do share any new ideas you have. I have a feeling this is art going to take on a life of it's own!

Thanks for the compliment! It such a shame that it's going all white so fast though. And yeah, my side's ok now, Thanks for your concern, you remembered! It's gone for good, I think.

I would be happy to make this special leaf for you Tiggerousity!

I have been a bit delayed because of stupid slow Tandy and some other stupid stuff but they said that my new order for supplies is just now to be shipped in 4-5 business days! Grrrr they are soo slow! I ordered that so long ago too. I thank everyone for their patience, I have not forgotten you believe me! This time I am being sure to order enough to avoid this kind of problem in the future! Arg!

Anyway, I have quite a few new ideas for hair do-dads in my mind that I have yet to actually create yet- For example... I wasnt to make slides and french barrette style stuff with paintings on them of art nouveau design, trad. animal (celtic, pa dutch [a personal pet project] italian, mideval etc) and I am open to any ideas people may have concerning this. I also want to make some carved leather designs of plant forms... I want to draw some and post them sinse I can't properly explain them. I also have a fe headbands and fabric stuff I was to make.

I will be creating an online store at some point, but I will continue selling stuff special request as I have been to anyone who asks me to here at LHC- well, because of loyalty and cuz you're all so nice and all that good stuff.

Anyway, thanks again for your patience and being so helpful ;) I can't wait to get back to work!!!!

Hi Faolin, Your stuff is totally awesome, I'm intrigued. I was reading your journal and I saw that you made a fabulous headband. How much would you charge for something like that? I have big curly hair, the kind that you said would look great with a headband like that in you journal  I am totally poor right now, as I just started Grad School, but I wanted to get an idea 8)

Faolin Ruadh

Thanks so much!

As for the headband, I would happily make you one. Lets see... I'll get back to you on the price because I used a freebee headband part (sans leaves) for the one I was wearing. I'll go to the crafts store and see how much the plain headbands are, estimate the leaf part, and let you know soon as possible. I doubt it would be much at all.

Is there any way you could make the leaves on it look like they're frosted with ice?

Yup, I will pm you after this weekend. I plan to make a little trip out and get the price and a couple of them. And yes I can make them look frosted, it would be pretty. They can have more wintery cooler colers too, if you like. There are several ways to make them look icy... I will have to experiment to find the best one.

I think it's the proper name (I hope) for the kind of metal clasps that you see on the backs of most barrettes.

Here's a picture of the clasp-

http://www.1accessory.com/catalog/Supplies/063-105M.jpg

I have to file them a bit to make them more hair friendly first. I find that alot of french clasp barrettes have these nasty sharp edges on them. I hate that!

Could you make the leaves have a little of both red and green? I like red autumn leaves, but I have cool skin tones. Too red would look odd. Like this middle leaf:

Grey Lady, sure thing. I will keep that picture ans reference.

I have tried and tried to get that stuff that you spray on silk flowers to make them look frozen- the kind that doesn't wash off anyway. I have gone to many stores... it turns out it's a seasonal product. So... I am going to try and see if I can special order it online. If not, I guess I have no choice but to wait.
