View Full Version : Quilting Excitement!!!
Lexy July 6th, 2004, 08:02 AM I'm so excited! I have been working on a King sized Double Wedding Ring quilt for our bed for 2 years now. I'm at the point where I'm sewing the rings into the white background.
So I realized I was going to have to buy 20 yards of white muslin and a king sized batting pretty soon. I jumped on Joann.com and they were having a sale AND gave me money off. So everything I needed is on it's way to my house for half of what I expected to pay!!! Yay!
I just had to share, no one I know in RL can get enthusiastic about this. Not even DH, who tries SO hard to summon a little bit of excitement when I start talking about quilts... :silly:
Golden Mermaid July 6th, 2004, 08:19 AM Very Cool!!! :rockerdud Are you doing the quilt by hand or using a machine?
Lexy July 6th, 2004, 08:20 AM I do everything by hand. That's why it takes for-ev-er
Golden Mermaid July 6th, 2004, 08:27 AM Oh...Can you use a machine? I don't know much about quilts...I am taking a class sometime this summer (they canceled it the first time I signed up for it) on doing a 9-patch, that should be interesting.
Dulci July 6th, 2004, 08:30 AM Lexy, that is marvelous that you do handwork like that, I admire anyone who has the patience to do stuff like that! Will you be posting pictures? :hint*hint:
I think I have a wedding-ring quilt too, my grand-aunt Dicie gave it to us as a wedding gift, it is made out of patches of wonderful old feedsack materials. I need to look at examples online to identify it for sure though...:ponder:
seabear July 6th, 2004, 08:36 AM I'm excited for you, Lexy! It's such a thrill when a project moves into a new phase, isn't it?
Anything King-sized is a huge undertaking, but a hand-pieced double-wedding-ring? You're a brave soul!
Keep us posted on your progress.
Lexy July 6th, 2004, 09:21 AM Alicia- Most people do use machines, but I quilt to relax, and my machine (or is it all sewing machines?) is so frustrating that it's definitely NOT relaxing. Besides, I come from 4 generations of hand quilters, so I'm not going to break that line now.
Dulci- I will post picutres once it looks like something. I'll probably have one square finished tonight, so I might put one up then. I'd love to see picutres of your quilt too. A feedsack quilt sounds fascinating!
Seabear- This is the largest quilt I have ever made. I made a Texas Star for my parents that was queen sized but REALLY heavily quilted. It took 2.5 years all together. This quilt I'm doing now will probably take 3 years by the time it's finished.
Lexy July 6th, 2004, 05:31 PM Here is the first complete square for my Double Wedding Ring quilt:

Only 35 more to go! I honestly think that the ironing was the hardest part. Trying to figure out which little piece of fabric should fold what way just about drove me batty.
Someday the finished quilt will look like this (http://www.amishcountrylanes.com/acqimages/hs39/Front1.jpg)
This is one of my signature baby quilts:

I have made 2.5 so far (I stopped the one for my sister-in-law's baby when she miscarried). I usually choose two border colors and then a bunch of dark and a bunch of light fabrics. This is called the Ohio Star.
I wish I had a picture of my Texas Star quilt. I'll have to take one next time I'm at my parent's house.
edited to add: And hey! Check out my toenail polish in the baby quilt pic! I think it's a good color on me...
Jennifer July 7th, 2004, 01:32 AM Very pretty Lexy! I'm sure it will turn out just lovely! I'm glad you got such a good deal too!
seabear July 7th, 2004, 03:34 AM Wow, Lexy, beautiful block! And your baby quilt is absolutely charming; the sawtooth border really is a great touch.
I love your toenail polish, too! Hee.
Dulci July 7th, 2004, 05:18 AM Lexy the colors of your block are so pretty! and What a Lucky Baby to have a quilt like that! and I like the toenail polish too.
I was wrong, I don't have a Double Wedding Ring, I think Aunt Dicie called it Flower Garden, it's there on the left. On the right is a full sized bedspread she tatted, I wish it showed up better in the picture! She used to keep in on the bed in her spare bedroom with burgandy sheets underneath, it was just stunning.

These are some that cousin Kewlin did out of feed sacks, she died in the 1940s.

I love the pink & blue one on the far right, it is very heavy and although the blocks are simple, the stitching is very dense and intricate.
Lexy July 7th, 2004, 06:47 AM Oh Dulci! Those are gorgeous! You have quite a treasure there! I especially like the middle quilt that cousin Kewlin did. Very different.
Heidi July 8th, 2004, 02:05 PM Oh my, all of those quilts are so lovely! Lexy, you are really talented!
I've been slowly adding fabric to the bag of cotton scraps for you each time I attempt to clean out my sewing room. Perhaps I should just send it off before it becomes too heavy?
ecofreak37 July 28th, 2004, 09:28 AM Hey, I get excited!
ecofreak37 July 28th, 2004, 09:37 AM I just had to share, no one I know in RL can get enthusiastic about this. Not even DH, who tries SO hard to summon a little bit of excitement when I start talking about quilts... :silly:
I just realized my previous comment was out of context. What I meant was: I am in the real world (being your sister) and I get very excited about your quilts!
Lexy July 28th, 2004, 09:49 AM Aw... thank you! :grouphug:
And everyone else who is not in RL too :grouphug:
You guys have gotten me super motivated about this. I'm halfway through the piecing of the double wedding rigng quilt and I have started planning a hawaiian quilt for my SIL.
Heidi July 28th, 2004, 10:13 AM Just make with the photos, girlie, and no one will get hurt...
Wow, where'd that come from? A little bit of caffeine goes a long way these days...
:flower:
Lexy July 28th, 2004, 10:29 AM Heidi my dear, I thought you were off the caffeine. Are you having a relapse? That's it, I'm going to have to do an intervention... you know we're all your friends here. We just want to help you... DON'T THROW YOUR LIFE AWAY LIKE THIS!!!!!!!! :silly:
Hee hee. I'll post more pictures when it starts to look like something besides lots of little squares in a pile.
Jaynyne July 28th, 2004, 11:06 AM Lexy, I am so jealous! How beautiful.
I guess I'm not jealous, because I don't like to sew. But I wish I could find someone to make some quilts for me. I have some really funky sheets from my childhood in the 70s and I would like to have quilts made for my sister and I with those. Additionally, I just inherited a bunch of really cool tablecloths from my fiances grandmother, but most of them are either worn in spots or too small for my table. I'd like to have quilts made from them, too. If I were resourceful, I would make them myself. I guess I am jealous of not only your talent and patience, but more specifically your resourcefulness!
And Dulci, your quilts are such a treasure! Although I have to admit, when I saw "feed sacks" I was picturing raw burlap-things.
Heidi July 28th, 2004, 11:08 AM  Ack! I'm busted! Okay, since I did the whole peeing on a stick thing this weekend and then promptly started my period (TMI for a craft board?) I figured I've got another 2-week window to sneak in a little bit of Earl Grey now and then.
Lexy July 28th, 2004, 11:30 AM :Fertility vibes for Heidi, fertility vibes for Heidi: :hollie:
Edited to add: Jaynye- Thank you so much! I was slightly tempted to volunteer to put those together for you (I would LOVE to do that) but I'm backed up about 7 years at this point, so I think I had better not.
Jaynyne July 30th, 2004, 04:03 AM Edited to add: Jaynye- Thank you so much! I was slightly tempted to volunteer to put those together for you (I would LOVE to do that) but I'm backed up about 7 years at this point, so I think I had better not.
 I hear you! I know so many people who would do it for me, but are backed up as well. I used to work at a senior center, and many of those women quilted. I was tempted to see if I could hire one of them, but also unsure because some of their eyesight was going...
What I really need to do is hire an Amish woman to do this for me, but I have no idea how to contact one. Do I flag down one of the buggies? Knock unsolicited on someone's door? It's not like I can post an ad or send an email. I have to really figure out the best way to make that happen! In fact, I think I will seriously persue this over the weekend.
Thanks for inspiring me!
Question, though. Should I cut the sheets into smaller pieces, or would that best be left to a quilter who knows what they are doing? Because I am clueless.
