View Full Version : What is your preference?

Which do you prefer?

1. Neat, even, blunt cut ends.

2. Natural, uneven, uncut ends.

Curious to see what the majority says. I'm sort of torn between blunt ends and the naturally tapered ones.
Do you think that one generally assumes that uneven ends signify unkempt tresses? Thanks for any input!

I think tapered (natural) ends look stunning on curlies.... but for straight hair, I tend to prefer a u-shaped or blunt cut, and not a natural line.

I like both. Really! And I completely agree with Rachel, go with what works for you.

I think it depends on the structure of the hair (straight / curly) and the length and the thickness as well

I think straight hair looks better in a blunt cut or a U shape, with nice filled out ends... very fine and thin hair might also look better blunt than layered/tapered, because it looks like you've got more of it.

For wavies/curlies and people with a lot of hair, I prefere tapered ends, or maybe a U shape (especialy for 'shorter' hair)
Somehow, I think straight hair that is obviously tapered, or thinner ends than the rest of the hair looks 'not cared for'. I think that straight hair needs more styling than wavie/curly hair does. It looks more ' artificial' or something to me.
I also don;t like wavy/curly thick hair with a blunt cut, especialy at shorter lenghts because it looks so massive to me... but then on stick straighties it does look very good !

I have a little layering for that same reason, don;t like the 'massive blunt cut'

But I think everyone should wear their hair in a way they're happy with !! it's on their heads after all !!!

no, natural uncut ends does not equal to unkempt hair for me..... i think hair that has a natural taper is so very beautiful.

i agree with rachel on this. curly or wavy hair looks wonderful with natural taper. straight hair looks good with neat ends...

I'm with Rachel on this, too. I think it really depends on the hair texture and the health of the hair. It would be difficult for me to generalize, because as soon as I do, I'm sure I'll run into an exception to the "rule"! ;) :D

My personal preference: 2. Natural, uneven, uncut ends. I have wavy/curly hair of varying lengths, and it's pretty much impossible to make the ends look perfectly even. I enjoy seeing blunt cut ends on straight hair, but also think some straight haired people look good with naturally tapered ends.

I agree that it depends on the hair. Perfectly pin-straight hair can look great with the blunt cut ends; in my experience it's harder to get some types of wavy or curly hair to behave enough to do this. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions though. ;)

With my wave pattern (I don't have neat little ripply waves, I have large bumpy swooshes), if I have it cut straight across I end up with a diagonal or just really uneven-looking strips, so I end up trimming it into a U shape (so sort of a "cut taper").

I think a nice natural taper can look good on any type of hair. 8)

Oh you ask hard questions!!!! ;)

For straight hair I prefer neat, even, blunt cut ends (even if it is a tapered cut . . . I don't like a jaggedy bottom edge for straight hair).

But wavy and curly hair could go either way (jaggedy edged bottom or straight, even cut).

I"m not sure why the preference, except wavy hair can be straight or uneven, depending on how the curls/waves fall . . . and I factor that into the "end appearance.' I have no reason for preferring straight hair having even ends.

What Pixna and Rachel said. ;-) On myself I prefer "neater" ends, but I've seen natural hemlines on other people that look lovely. I've also seen natural hemlines that I personally think could use a trim because the general health of the hair has not been looked after and the ends simply look ragged. It's a very personal decision and one that varies depending on the head of hair in question. (How's that for sitting on the fence? ;-))

Another proud fence hopper here :DD I like both - I really really like both.

The only look I don't care for is when hair seperates out awkwardly from the rest of the hair...g

I prefer natural ends on all hair types. But if a person is very neat and precise about her style of dress, then she should probably have neatly trimmed, even ends to complete the look (though if I were dressed neatly and precisely, I would *want* messy hair because I hate to look too dolled-up)

I like both too! On curlies, definitely natural ends.

On me, (very straight) it depends on how many months it has been since the last trim! I try to talk myself into the natural ends all time, but eventually they start looking stringy and I find it better after a good trim to blunt cut them.

I was never into the U shaped cut for myself. I love it on curlies/wavies though :D

I definately prefer blunted ends

I also think it's a matter of preference and hair type. I have seen very nice blunt ends on straighties and wavies although I think curlies look better with untapered ends or a V shape...Yes, there I said it. The V shape is definitely an option.

I like the blunt or U-shape on straight hair types (usually) and I've seen girls with curly hair that looked great with blunt, V-cut, and natural.

The only sticking point with me is I like hair to look healthy, regardless of length.

All of this is IMHO!

I prefer blunt, but have seen hair that looks good with tapered ends.

I'm gonna march with the majority and say that on curly/wavy haired people, both natural and trimmed hair looks nice.

However IMHO straight haired people, particularly those with fine hair, look nicer with trimmed ends. I don't mind a blunt cut or a U cut, but more often than not a natural hemline looks ragged and uncared for.

I like both, but I lean towards blunt ends.

I guess it does depend on the head of hair, though, too. ;)

.
.While on my own head I prefer a blunt cut,
if it were shorter or wavy / curly
(dream on, Karen Marie, dream on)
I would go for a U.
At this length, no one would notice the U, they
would say my ends were uneven. LOL

I think curlies and wavies look stunning in U's, because
the curls sort of drape around the body, while long straight
hair just sort of hangs there, so for me, the ends are blunt
to make up for the body I don't have in my hair.

If I have wavy or curly hair (thanks to braids or curlers)
I like to pull some of it up into a barrette. This gives it
that full look I would otherwise have with shorter hair with
body. Once upon a time I could curl my hair and it looked
so poofy, so full. But alas, it has reached a point where all
it does is, well, hang, so the ends must be chopped for my
preference.

As for untrimmed ends, there are indeed those
who care for their hair very well and have untrimmed
ends which do not have that unkempt look.
I think many tend to generalize hair instead of taking
the condition of the hair into consideration.
Untrimmed ends. On which head? ;)

For example, well cared for hair can go without trims
and have that natural, beautiful 70's kind of hair,
while someone who holds their hair in their fist while
yanking out the rats will have an entirely different
look if they don't trim. This is the ick factor everyone seems
to be thinking about.

I truly believe it all depends on the head of hair
for each person. I've seen some amazing uncut ends and
I've seen some of those "Get that girl a pair of scissors quick!" types.

:D

I think it depends on the hair type. I think that straight hair looks best with a blunt cut, or maybe with just a slight U shape. And curly hair looks good with a more tapered look, or a deeper U shape. Wavy hair could go either way, depending on how wavy it is. Of course, different things look good on different people, and there are exceptions to any generalization.

For myself, I have slightly wavy hair, and I like just a bit of a U shape. But that's partly because the front of my hair is more damaged, and a U shape means the damaged, lighter colored hair gets trimmed sooner. Once I've trimmed more, and gotten the ends nicer, I might go for more of a blunt cut.

I have a strong preference for natural/tapered ends, but that is not to say that I haven't seen blunt ends that looked fabulous!

No matter the length or type I love the natural ends. Dramatic or gental V's all look soft and elegant to me.

I definitely prefer the blunt cut.
