View Full Version : I made Katrine's flax seed gel!

I made Katrine's flax seed hair gel... and it turned out quite well, too, if I say so myself. I didn't have any conditioner on hand, so I made my own version:

6 tablespoons flax seed
2 cups water

Boil 10 minutes, then strain while still hot. Add:

6 tablespoons aloe gel
1 teaspoon coconut oil infused with alkanet
1/3 cup water

Like Katrine said, this recipe didn't look all that appealing at first... but instead of adding the olive oil called for, I decided to add the alkanet / coconut to make it a nicer colour. And sure enough, it's a pretty raspberry hue... made me want to leave some flax seeds in for aesthetics, to represent raspberry seeds. Beat the heck out of it with a whisk.

I added 1% fragrance, 1% vitamin e, and 1% germaben, by weight, so that it'll have a decent shelf life. Poured it into a squeezie toddle, and it looks great!

I would classify this recipe, the way I made it, as "light hold" gel. That's what I was looking for, but for others, I would suggest omitting the 1/3 cup water for "strong hold".

It sure looks nice, and feels great - even on my hands.

I've been tempted to try the flaxgel recipe, but have 2 bottles of gel to use up first. Glad it turned out well for you. What are alknanet and germaben?

Alkanet is a reddish root that can be used as a natural dye, and germaben is a preservative.

That sounds fantastic Rachel, I may have to try something similar myself, since yours turned out so well.

P.S. Thanks for your compliment on my doll earlier. I can't find that thread again for the life of me.

Glad you like it?! :)

Im still experimenting...trying to put the flax seeds in a Tea-bag or Tea-egg to avoid straining it. It produces a very thin 'gel' (spray) with very minimal hold...almost nothing.

Yes, alkanet creates a really nice range of colours in skin care, from light peachy pink, to dark, dark magenta. I love playing around with it! Decided to go with the germaben II because I don't want to risk my products getting high bacteria counts.

And Palonia - that's ok - I can't remember what thread it was in, either!

Sounds awesome Rachel. It's so hard to find a gel that doesn't get sticky as it dries. I still haven't tried the flaxseed gel but the more raves I read the more I'm tempted. Heeheehee.

Thanks for posting your recipie and results!

Bumping this for Kira... and looking over this thread again, I would recommend omitting the extra 1/3 cup water, if your frizzies are quite bad. The extra water is for light hold.
