View Full Version : Making my own hairglove??
DiamondHeart May 27th, 2004, 12:07 PM If anyone has a hairglove and wants to take a peek at it and give me a good idea of how they're made and if they think it would be possible to make my own?
They're basically a length of fabric with snaps around it, right? Is the fabric stretchy? Is ANYTHING stretchy? How do they stay put in your hair?
Thanks!
~Diamond~
Grey_Lady May 27th, 2004, 01:13 PM I don't have a helpful answer for you, but I'm waiting to see the responses to this thread. If I can make something myself rather than buy it, I will. :)
catgreens May 27th, 2004, 02:48 PM I ordered two, one for my sister and one for myself. First let me say the customer service at HairGlove is great and I'm sure they'll answer any questions you have.
Since I'm concerned about ocean water damage, I purchased the neoprene 12" hair glove. It's made of the same material as wetsuits. I wouldn't describe it as super stretchy but it has some stretch because it's neoprene. It has snaps and a little hook at the top of it where you hook it to your ponytail elastic. I basically make a low ponytail, hook on the hair glove and snap up the snaps.
When I first looked at it I though, heh, how hard can this be to make? But if you figure in the cost of buying wetsuit material, snaps, and the time it takes to cut out the pattern and sew it's worth the $12 just to buy it. I'm not a great seamstress so I don't know how the snaps are put on, but if you have experience with that I'm sure you could make your own.
The hairglove website doesn't show all they have in stock. When I called they went and checked for me and there were 5 or 6 different patterns available in the 12" model.
With the shiny silver snaps and black neoprene, it looks really cool, I must say!
LisaJaney May 27th, 2004, 03:24 PM I have a neoprene one, and a black suede leather one. (obviously the leather one is not stretchy) I have also sewn a few of my own. The HOOK to attach it to your ponyband is the trickiest part, and I have not gotten that mastered. I made a rectangle of fabric (finished dimensions were about 5" wide by 8" long) and put a skirt-waistband-hook inside it to hook to the ponyband. It does come off, however. But the REAL hairgloves don't come off. So you ARE getting something from hairglove that really can't be duplicated. I attached 5 snaps (there IS some overlap on the underneath side of the hairglove) and it was a little lighter than the real hairglove. I still think the real deal is better, but mine will do in a pinch. And: hairglove didn't have any with CHICKENS on it, but I was able to get calico with chickens on it, so that's what my homemade one has.
DiamondHeart May 27th, 2004, 04:14 PM OK. I'm breaking down and just buying the damn thing.
12" black neoprene, you say? Yay!! They didn't have that on the site... I was very disheartened. Americana won't match my swimsuit.
God that sounded preppy. Anyway...

Sylph January 20th, 2005, 02:31 AM Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I was wondering if anybody had any luck with this?
LisaJaney January 20th, 2005, 02:51 PM I went to their site after seeing this thread awhile back (right after I answered) and they don't seem to even OFFER the longer lengths that they used to? Really, is the longest length you can get an 8" hairglove? They used to have 12" and even longer ones..... Hmmm, wonder what the deal is? Maybe they just weren't SELLING the longer ones. Doesn't make good business-sense to be making stuff that isn't selling, though.
So, did you find one that works for you, Diamond?
Hibrida April 8th, 2007, 10:34 PM I'm new here so I had to go see what this was about.
The longer lengths are available at

I looked at the thing and thought "Oh, that's a braid cinch." When I made similar for my own braids (skinny), I'd put a thumb tack between two layers in the construction, so the head of the tack would be toward my head when worn and the tack would keep the assembly from slipping down on the braid. Mine had leather laces rather than snaps.

harley mama April 9th, 2007, 07:56 AM I had a leather hair glove and didn't like it. It was heavy and felt like it was
damaging to my ponytail where it attached at the base of my skull. I took
it back and got a refund!
freznow April 9th, 2007, 05:34 PM Gah! Now I want one! I liked the american flag neoprene one in the discount section, but when I tried to add it to my cart it didn't work! Blah.
