View Full Version : What do you use to wash your skin?
Hex Goblinglow May 24th, 2004, 09:45 PM Soap or rather some other detergent like shower gel or washing lotion or cream cleanser? And what do you use to clean your face? Just curious because I'm looking for a new routine. Oh, please also mention your skin type. Thanks!
wtchmel May 24th, 2004, 10:08 PM Hmmm, I only wash my face in the shower, and I don't use anything but Estee lauder scrub. I don't wear makeup though.
LongRed May 25th, 2004, 01:42 AM I use oil of olay sometimes,
Mary Kay cleanser sometimes,
Body Shop Tea Tree facial foam
the other times....I'm a real facial
cleanser junkie!!!
My skin is normal/combination with
no acne and few wrinkles. I don't wear
makeup.
memphisluvr May 25th, 2004, 03:15 AM Right now I'm using pink Camay soap for my body, and a mixture of about 60%CO (Castor Oil), 40% EVOO with a few drops of Lavender EO for scent for my face.
I'm loving the oil only BTW. My skin is quite nice and getting nicer. I do think my next mixture will use less CO. That stuff is hard to get off you face!
Gaijin May 25th, 2004, 03:25 AM I use Dr. Bronners Liquid Soap in Peppermint for the body and Clearasil face wash, it doesn't dry out my skin. I like the pump bottle a lot better than the hard to squeeze tubes.
ETA: I have fairly sensitive skin that has dry patches, and gets oily in the t-zone.
Dulci May 25th, 2004, 05:42 AM I alternate between Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap and Johnson & Johnson's Head to Toe babywash. I wash my whole body, face included with either one of those two, but not every day. I mean I wash my face every day, but only soap up my body in the shower 1-2 times a week. The other days I take a hot bath (no soap).
My skin is oily.
Hex Goblinglow May 25th, 2004, 06:30 AM Thanks everyone. My skin has some minor impurities but at the same time it can be slightly flaky/dry. I wonder if this is due to wrong treatment. I wash my face twice a day using shower gel or washing gel, but I think I'll try something different. I can't use oil because I wear contact lenses. But maybe I'll start washing just once a day...
Snowymoon May 25th, 2004, 07:12 AM This may sound odd, but I have had no problems yet washing my face in the same conditioner I have used to CO my hair. ;). I wash 2 to 3 times a day, as I am oily usually, but I can get flaky around my nose. I tone with an ACV/water mix and use NG Herbal Lotion/Aveeno brightning lotion mix. Before that, I used Nutragena Pore Refining cleansing scrub and toner with the Aveeno skin brightning lotion. When this quits working, I will switch. ;).
anixia May 25th, 2004, 07:24 AM I only wash my face once a day, at night, either in the shower or at the sink, whereever I happen to be. I use either Lavender Baby Moose (I think made by J&J) or a Foaming Milk Bath Cleanser for babies. Both are lightly foaming cleansers without being too drying and they have soothing ingredients, good smells and remove all my makeup, including mascara and eyeliner. I follow this up with a few drops of AHA 8% lotion and after it sits a bit, I take about a dime sized amount of unrefined Shea Butter rub it into an oil and smooth on my face. In the morning I just rinse with cool water and apply a sunscreen containing light lotion.
My skin rarely breaks out and since doing the AHA and Shea Butter it looks so baby smooth and most of the blackheads are gone.
Edited to add: My skin is pretty dry, but I get blackheads on my nose and if I breakout its on the jawline.
Climber May 25th, 2004, 07:56 AM I use homemade soap on my body (and sometimes on my face)--it's a batch with lots of luscious oils in it (avocado, olive, etc.) and nothing artificial
My skin is normal to dry-ish, with occasional oily patches. On my face I use Burt's Bees Orange Facial Wash (or something like that--comes in a tube). I love Burt.
rainee May 25th, 2004, 08:05 AM I use either Johnson & Johnson head to toe baby wash or suave kids cherry blast shampoo and conditioner in one (doesn't seem to break me out, and is kinda moisturizing). I use either st ives scrub or baking soda mixed with cleanser every few days; and a facial mask every 3rd day (when i wash my hair).
Stephanie May 25th, 2004, 09:24 AM I'm currently using Cetaphil for oily skin (the foaming liquid, not the bar). I also am a huge fan of Johnson & Johnson's Head-to-Toe. I love the oil cleansing method, but I tend to use that just for deep cleansing now because I love foamies. ;)
I'm dying to try a good, homemade goats milk soap, though.
Oh, skin type: Normal to oily (mostly normal - not too dry, not too oily). I am very prone to breakouts, though. I think that's a sensitivity to rough handling, though. ;)
Grey_Lady May 25th, 2004, 11:39 AM For body washing, I use whatever smells good. :) Except Lever 2000, which gives me a rash.
My face is a whole 'nother story. I have tried so many things on my face it's unbelieveable. Right now, I can only use two products that don't give me zits, blackheads or a rash. St. Ives Apricot scrub, and Queen Helene's Mint Julep Masque.
I've heard lots of people complain about the apricot scrub, saying the grit is too sharp and tears your skin or something. It makes my face happy, anyway. Smells kind of nasty, though.
Madeleine May 25th, 2004, 01:26 PM I use NuSkin cream cleanser for dry skin. My skin is dry to normal (combination) and more or less sensitive. I cannot tolerate any soaps, no matter how well made or oily they are. Mild detergents do work, but on the face (and scalp for that matter) I prefer something that's even less stripping.
Rain May 25th, 2004, 02:48 PM I use jojoba oil to wash my face twice a day. I used to use Dove in the shower but I recently switched back to Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap (http://www.kissmyface.com/Product/Kiss+My+Face/Bar+Soaps/0100401EA/). It's great for my skin but I'd stopped using it because of the mess it makes in the shower. I decided I'd rather have good skin than worry about the shower.
My skin is...normal/combination, I guess. My cheeks get a bit dry during the fall and winter. I occasionally get tiny breakouts in my t-zone. They're almost always small enough to totally hide under makeup. I am nearly 30 and don't have anything resembling a hint of a wrinkle.
Grey_Lady May 25th, 2004, 03:03 PM That reminds me...I used to use Mysore Sandalwood Soap. I can get it here in the import aisle at the grocery store for 99 cents. It's made in India, with sandalwood oil. It's awesome stuff, but it does tend to turn the shower pink after awhile. I miss it, maybe I'll buy it again and just clean the shower more.

Stephanie May 25th, 2004, 03:03 PM Ooh, Rain! I used to push that soap (the KMF) on anybody who would listen! LOVE IT! It's awesome. I'm not a huge fan of the smell, but it sure does make the skin look nice and healthy.
Anna May 25th, 2004, 05:07 PM I use Dove Intensive Moisture body wash in the shower (about twice a week) and use Extra Virgin Olive Oil and the Oil Clensing Method on my face every two to three days.
Heidi May 25th, 2004, 05:14 PM I've been using the Oil Cleansing Method for several months now and I love it. I use salt or sugar as a scrub with the oil every other day.
Sheila May 26th, 2004, 07:58 AM I only use the white dove bar soap for washing the body. I have only ever used that. (grandma used it from day one too) I think that is why I still use it.. reminds me of her. :)
As far as washing the face that is a different story.. I have pretty much tried every product under the sun.. and I have found all of them to be to drying.. even though I do have somewhat of an oily face. it's eather oily or flakey dry.. has never been inbetween.. I do find though that when I lightly exfoliate every day with the facial cleansers, and then I apply a facial lotion.. but I usually keep my face wet or wet my hands and mix the facial lotion in with the water when applying the moisturizer. this helps me use 10 times less of the stuff. Other wise I have found that every facial moisturizer I have used is to heavy, thick, greasy, oily, filmy.. etc. It's not to bad though whe I dilute the moisturizer. it doesnt leave my face feeling tight and dry or greasy.

Dispatcherbert May 26th, 2004, 09:49 PM I use quite the array of projects, all of which depends on whether or not I'm wearing makeup that day.
Regardless of whether or not I wear makeup, I always wash my face with baby wash in the shower and also scrub with a gentle Buff Puff. If I wear makeup, I use Biore cleansing cloths to remove it (I like not having to use something separate to take off eye makeup). If I'm not wearing makeup, I use baby wipes at the end of the day to freshen up.
I haven't used it in awhile but I'm also a huge Noxema fan.
Carolyn May 27th, 2004, 04:53 AM For my face I like Serious Skin Care, either the Glycolic Cleanser or the Acne Wash. I have very oil skin with blackheads. I washing my face morning and night. I like the St Ives Medicated Apricot scrub. I like the grittiness. Other scrubs just don't scrub as well. I try to use a mask at least twice a week. Right now I like one by Kiehls and a couple my Serious Skin Care. For body wash I like Jasons or Bath and Body. I want to try the Dr Bronners peppermint wash.
Chamomile betty May 27th, 2004, 12:10 PM I use Mary Kay velocity products. I have combo skin and it's very oily in the Tzone.
Love your siggy :inlove:

funnybunny668 May 27th, 2004, 05:48 PM Sheila, I like your idea of leaving your face wet to apply moisturizer. I hardly ever use moisturizer for that same reason, too greasy. I'll have to try it your way!
I like using Dove facial cloths. Easy! They already have the cleanser in them, just wet it and wash! :)
Rain May 28th, 2004, 06:17 PM Ooh, Rain! I used to push that soap (the KMF) on anybody who would listen! LOVE IT! It's awesome. I'm not a huge fan of the smell, but it sure does make the skin look nice and healthy.
It's good stuff! It's totally worth the green goo that accumulates in the soap dish and also smelling vaguely like I was just making pizza dough.
E. May 30th, 2004, 03:49 AM I have clear, but dry and very sensitive skin. I use Clinique Comforting Cream Cleanser (can be used without water, what is important for me), Clinique Clarifying Lotion Clarifiante 1 and Nivea Visage Complete Protection for every day and Nivea Visage Regenerierende Nachtcreme for nights. Occasionaly face masques and peelings.
Violeta May 30th, 2004, 10:07 AM I use Cetaphil GC 90% of the time but when I need a foaming wash I use Topx Ultra Gentle C.
Dafne May 30th, 2004, 10:57 AM My skin is really dry so to wash it I use a soft make-up remover than i rinse... And after this a lot of cream!
melisanda June 1st, 2004, 04:06 PM Nowadays I cleanse my face with some oily stuff almost exclusivelly. I have an oily cleanser from Lush (Ultrabland) but lately I have using just jojoba oil (I mix it with EOs-3drops in 10mL bottle). My skin feels too tight after anyhting else.
I cleanse my face only in the night, in the morning I just spritz toner on it and wipe it off.
btw, I have very dry skin (but oily forehead)
I have also started using jojoba oil instead of night cream and it works just as well (I remove the dirty oil from my face, spritz toner on and apply jojoba again)
Ali June 1st, 2004, 06:15 PM Hiya
I use a moisturising shower gel on my body, and a nutrimetics foaming cleanser and toner in one on my face. The foaming cleanser has really done wonders for my skin, but I definitely wouldn't recommend a a two in one product like this unless you have fairly oily skin (I would imagine it could be quite drying). In the morning I use a light moisturiser with a good sunscreen, and in the evening I use a retinol anti-wrinkle cream, and twice a week I put some apricot kernel oil on before my nighttime moisturiser. The retinol cream has been the only thing that has worked on my cystic acne, and I have tried everything short of roaccutane.
I'm planning on trying the oil cleansing method when I get to the end of my current bottle of cleanser, but I'm interested to know if anyone uses a toner with this method? (I saw that someone was using ACV)
Ali
I tried my first asprin mask last weekend too... best thing ever!! I'm planning another for this weekend :cloud9:
Tiffanie June 19th, 2004, 08:29 PM I use Mary Kay products exclusively and wouldn't have it any other way. I have several products, but the backbone are the 3in1 Cleanser which has a cleanser, toner, and mask in one bottle and the Age Fighting Moisturizer. Both are oil-free but provide excellent hydration. They are good for all skin types. PM if you would like some more info. It's never too early to start a great skin care program, you'll have the same skin for the rest of your life, you want to take special care of it, even better care than you do for your hair :)
gabiwags June 19th, 2004, 09:46 PM I rotate according to how my face is feeling. With makeup I feel like I have to remove with OCM though.
For some reason I seem to be one of the few people who can't use cetaphil :silly: . KMF, Clean & Clear BP Cleanser and Neutrogena Salicylic wet & wipes are fav's ...g
MoonChild June 20th, 2004, 03:49 AM I use oils.
My normal mix is jojoba-, Evoo, castor oil and honey mixed together. But itīs rather time-consuming...so now I use Natusan oil wash. Itīs a baby wash that foames lightly.
I use it on my body and on my face. I stay at home most of the days but if I go out I wear make up. Depending on how I need it Iīll scrub my face 1-3 times a week witd soda mixed with water.
Sara June 20th, 2004, 01:05 PM When I bathe at night, I wash my back and chest with Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash (keeps my back clear except for that time of the month) and I wash my face with Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash and I follow with some acne cream with 10% benzoyl peroxide. In the morning, I use Burt's Bee's Tomato Garden Complexion soap, and sometimes a dot any spots I may have with acne cream. My skin breaks out so easily and I'm still looking for products that may work better at keeping it clear.
AmberBella June 20th, 2004, 08:44 PM My skin gets washed with the Milk Bar soap you can get at RiteAid and only RiteAid....I hope they don't stop making that stuff.
My face gets washed with water only. I have normal skin that doesn't like me to fuss over it. If I wash it too often I get blemishes....I'm fortunate that my skin balances itself nicely.
I don't generally wear make up...but on the rare occasion that I do, I just use that same Milk soap on my face. I also have a bar of AO's Honeysuckle Rose face soap that is nice. It's gentle and I haven't had any trouble with it yet. The soap is expensive, but I use it maybe once a month so it lasts me a long time.
Zoo June 21st, 2004, 09:37 PM I use Neutrogena bar soap for my face and body. I have a shelf full of various cleansers that i have tried...they all break me out in a rash and my skin starts burning... or I will get blemishes on my face...ugh. I have tried a generic neutrogena clone (note to self...don't do that AGAIN!) and actually got acne on my arms. Acne has never been a problem for me except whn I use something other then neutrogena (I'm 38) although I do get the occasional blackhead around my mouth. No wrinkles and otherwise fairly blemish free. My skin is dry to normal. In the winter i have to apply moisterizer to my body.
On a side note...my DH is trying to get me to try this stuff they use to wash farm animals with? It comes in a big tub and is a lot cheaper then neutrogena. I think it is virtually pure glycerin but I'm not sure. I just give him a funny look whenever he tries to get me to put it in the cart when we buy chicken feed

bunniee June 22nd, 2004, 05:07 PM I'm with gabi, I vary my routine according to what my skin needs. On any given day, I might use Dove sensitive skin soap, Olay daily facial cloths, the OCM, AO Green Tea & Gingko cleanser, or just plain water. Not all at once, of course.
One thing I always do is to apply moisturizer or my blend of oils & EOs to damp skin. I can use less moisturizer or oil this way and it seems to work much better too. I do apply sunscreen after my skin has dried though, as I don't want to dilute it.
Whipit June 26th, 2004, 12:23 AM Whipit's skin routine:
Every evening:
Oil cleanse my face with johoba oil, then apply more johoba oil as a moisturiser
Every second evening:
When I CO my hair, I wash my body with this soap "Australian Organika Rose Geranium", http://www.lettucedeliver.com.au/shop/en-us/dept_140.html (fantasic ingredients! It's an oil bar really - it smells divine).
Every morning:
Body brush, then I freshen up with a sponge bath using warm water with a few drops of lavendar EO (no soap).
My skin is combination, and this routine leaves it smooth and silky. I no longer get any breakouts, and I have no wrinkles or fine lines (at age 30). I stay OUT of the sun all together, I feel this is very important to my skin (I wear a hat or use an umbrella - I'm in Australia, and where I am in particular the sun is very very harsh).
and also ... I facercise which is another important part of my routine :rockerdud
