View Full Version : Never a short-haired adult?

Hi all. I was just wondering if there were anyone here besides me who had never had short hair as an adult (or at all, for that matter). Over the past twenty years (I started growing around eleven or so) I've grown from long and feathered to long and banged to long and all one length, but I have never cut my hair short. I've also never permed or colored. Sometimes I get mildly curious, and sometimes, when my girlfriends are laughing about past hair "don'ts" I feel a bit left out, but mostly I'm pretty happy with my boring hair history. Anyone else in the same boat?

My hair has been shoulder-length or longer since I was 16, and now I'm almost twice that, so I have never been a short-haired adult. I never intend to be a short-haired adult, if I can help it.

Hmmm.....Interesting question. :ponder:

No, I've never had short hair as an adult. Well.....there was one unfortunate incident about 12 years ago with a stylist who cut my length to my shoulders (I had bangs at the time, too). So, in a sense (compared to what I consider long on myself) that was short. But I started growing my hair long at about age 13 or 14 and I'm 37 now. During that time (except for that moment) it has always been long (but never as long as it is now).

May it continue to grow long into my old age! :D

Count me in. My hair broke off to my shoulders twice in my teens due to perms and SUN IN (get out the crosses and garlic and anything else to keep this evil away!!!!!!!).
But I've never in my life had short hair, except as a toddler waiting for it to grow in!!!! lol

It depends on what you consider short--the shortest I ever had/will have as an adult was just longer than chin length, about 3 months ago. It was cut in the same style as long hair so it doesn't *really* count as short. I've had boy cuts when I was in elementary school and younger.

I've always had short hair, up until 2.5 years ago :)

As a little girl I always had long hair. Then I had an awful short cut when I was about 8 years old (well it was the 80s  ) and people always mistook me for a boy!

I cut back to a very short pixie again at around 16 ( what was I thinking - I would never ever do that again) and since then I was always hovering around shoulder length until I finally managed to get past my shoulders about 9 months ago. I'm 23 now. :D

The shortest I've been as an adult (err, my hair I mean) was just below my shoulders. I've seen pictures of me as a child (until about 6/7 years old) with hair that was just touching shoulders, but no shorter than that.

I've wondered what it felt like to have hair chin length, or shorter, but I'm not THAT interested.

The shortest my hair has ever been, except for being a toddler ;) , is just beneath the ears when I was eight. From then on it hovered between just above shoulder to BS. At 16 I got a cut, my hair was dry, one big mass of tangles, thousands of split ends and at least at BS (maybe little longer) So I wanted something different.. so it was cut short in the face (resembling of long bangs, between ear and chin) and long in the back.. a very strong V shape. This looked really nice at the time.. (can;t seem to find nice pics of it) but after a while I wanted to go back at one length, with a little tapering.. I'm back there for about a year now, keeping it constant between shoulder and BS again... I'm 21 now, and decided to go for waist lenght, or a little past (and I'm long waisted, that's for sure)
I'm just starting to 'be an adult' :D but I don;t see a short hair cut for the next 10 years... And as I do love long hair on elderly women (age 60+) I don;t think I'll go shorter then...

Hmmmmmm -- I think it depends how you define "adult"! ;) Seriously, I had a buzz cut when I was in my early and mid-twenties. Then I began growing it out in my late twenties. I wasn't particularly mature then. Although some people might have classified me as an "adult" at that time because of my age, maturation-wise, I think I was still very much a kid. Since my thirties, I've had long hair. Even though I'm almost fifty now, I don't think I became an adult until a few years ago! :DD

I have not had hair shorter than waist length as an adult (which I am defining as age 18 or above.)

I had a pixie cut when I was in the second grade. Since then I've let my hair grow out with occasional trims. As a teenager and adult my hair has been around wiast length or tailbone length depending on how well I took care of it. Since visiting these boards, for almost three years, my hair is the healthiest it has been in a long time, although it is still only tailbone length.
I'm thinking that is as long as my hair will get!

i'll be 30 next monday and i'm still not an adult. LOL :D
when i was little i had a dorthy hamil (sp) haircut. (shiver. eewwww) that was my shortest. all through out my teens i would let it grow then cut into a bob. did that a few times. it wasn't until my mid 20's that i started growing it out "long". it is so much easier to deal with. but right now i'm thinking of bangs. i need a change and will never cut my length. but then i remember the hassles of bangs and growing them out. of course i can never make up my mind about anything.

My shortest hairstyle as an adult was my Kelly McGillis 'do. My hair was shoulder length and I had it permed. That was back in 1986 or 87. I kept the style for about 1 year, then I let my hair grow.

My hair has been past shoulder length since I was about 17 (I'm 34, now). I wore it fairly short through out high school, though.

I've had hair that was mid back or longer since I was 12. I've never really liked short hair on myself.

I've had long hair ever since it actually started growing... I was one of those bald, bald babies. Maybe I'm trying to make up for it now :D

I started growing my hair out when I was 16. At the time, it was a very short cut. So I guess if 18 is the marker for adulthood (?), then I've never had short hair as an adult. By the time I turned 18, it was about BS length.

Good question!

At 20, I'm just barely an adult, though I don't quite think of myself as one.
I've never had short hair, exept when I was a baby and it hadn't grown long, of course. I had long hair throughout most of my childhood. The longest it ever was before the last few years was waist length, when I was 11. I've cut it to shoulder length three times I think, in 3rd and 7th grade, and as a sophomore. I've had bangs and grown them out a few times, too. I tended to cut bangs at the same time that I would cut back to shoulder length. The last time, a little over 4 years ago, I cut bangs, and then in only about a month I decided to grow them out, so I never even had to trim them. LOL. During most of junior high and high school, my hair ranged from shoulder to shoulder blade length. I decided to grow my hair out 4 years ago, and I've only had small trims since then.

As a kid I had tailbone length blond hair, which, when I was about 9 I got cut just below the ears. It looked TERRIBLE all the way down to shoulder length (thank G-d I had no bangs!), so I'm never going down that path again. As my hair got more damaged I'd occasionally cut it, but it rarely went shorter than BSL. Now I'm hovering above waist lenght and trying to go back to the tailbone length of my childhood ;)

I have not had hair much above my shoulders since I was six. It has hovered around BSL since I was about 18, ad I'm 34 now.

I have never really been a short-haired adult, and I'm a middle-aged guy! However, for a guy it doesn't really have to be all that long to qualify as long. I started to grow it long at 15, but I was in my 20s when I decided to grow out the layers and try for some real length. I think what started that was when a girl pointed out that my hair was only long by guy standards and not really long in absolute terms. I thought something like "right, I'll fix that", and I did!

Even when I had short hair as a child it was never buzzed or anything like that - even the thought of it makes me cringe! That's the only style I don't like on other people, not even on Sinead O'Connor.

I've only had short hair once in my life and that was when I was a 9 years old. Everyone I know says the can't imagine me in short hair, although in the same breath they tell me my hair is now too long. I just can't win.

I'm not quite 18 yet, but does it count if I *plan* to never be a short-haired adult?

I had a pixie cut in first grade. My hair has been growing out ever since then. As a teenager, my hair was healthy and below my waist. I didn't use any styling products or blow dryers.

When I got married (early 20's) I started using the blow dryer and hot curlers. (Influence of MIL). My hair started getting shorter and dried out. The shorter and more dried out it got, the more products and gadgets I tried.

Finally, about 4 years ago I found the LHL site. I got rid of my blow dryer and electric curlers and started using CO washing with regular deep conditioning treatments. Now my hair is amost back to what it was when I was a teenager. Although, not quite as thick and with a lot more grey. :bluesmile

No. My hair hasn't been shorter the mid back since I was about 10. I've also not had any 'odd' styles. Never permed, and only once dyed during my goth stage.

Ok... say 18 is when I became an adult and I am 30 now.

I had my hair super short/shave back once during that time and for less than a year. The other time my hair was at shoulder length or a tad below with short/med layers and now at BSL.
So, yes I have been a short haired adult.
I swear if I go shorter it will not be above the shoulders!!!

My hair has never been shorter than shoulders since 9th grade. I do consider shoulder length short tho. Mostly it's been shoulder blade to mid back. About 5 years ago I took a stupid pill one day and had my past mid back hair cut to a shoulder length Jennifer Anniston cut. It ended up a lot shorter and more layered than I wanted. I'll never set foot in a Regis salon again. After buckets of tears and weeks of the godawful layers up in a claw clip I decided I was going long again and I was going to really work at it this time. That's when I found the hair boards and I've been on track growing since then. I'm very happily back in longhairland again. I'm determined to finally have waistlength hair for the first time in my life and I hope never to have short hair again.

Hi,

I first started growing my hair long when i was about 18. A few years later i cut it short again when i did my draft service in the army. After that was finished, i let my hair grow again. Itīs been long ever since, at one time to my knees even!

I have had short hair for eighteen years now. Whew! I'm finally letting it grow at 36 (well, 35 since I started growing it last year!).
