I need help. Scott got a short tailed possum over the weekend (yes for a pet) at the exotic animal show.

He wants ME to name it. Yikes! I can't come up with ANYthing. :(

If you've got a good idea, I'd be extremely grateful!

She's young, about the size of a mouse now, and will mature to the size of a rat. Kinda brownish color. If that helps!

The best I could come up with was "Shortcake" but he didn't care for that...... hah. Hmmm.....

Ah well, thanks for any ideas! He wants something unusual.

My two favorite names for pets are Coiled and Sprung, but you usually need two of them for that.

hehe, good names.

LOL!!!!!!!!! That is TOO cute!

Val - how about Jed or Jethro? or Ellie May if a girl? LOL! When you said it was a possum, the Beverly Hillbillies came to my mind right away! LOL!

When I think about possums I always think about watching my best friend's cousins punt armadillos. I have no idea why that's connected in my head, but it is.

There's a community in AR called possum grape. It's at exit 69 on highway 67-167. Seriously.

Hmmm. There's also a lake in Texas called king possum lake.

I have no real suggestions, just some odd facts that may add up to a cool name.

Good luck finding a name and *post pictures*! I want to see a pet possum.

I'd probably name an opossum Opal. Well, if it's a girl (I assumed Shortcake wasn't a boy name...but it's a good name, Val!)

Since it will be a brown color why not name it after every woman's favorite item - CHOCOLATE!

Here are some chocolate names for you:

Godiva
Cocoa
Hershey

Hope you like them....btw I had a cat I fostered for a month and she was a brown Abysinian (sp?) or something...can't remember if that's the right breed. But anyways, I named her Godiva and my hubby named her Hershey. Poor thing had an identity crisis by the time she was adopted out...and I'm sure she was happy to leave my zoo...she was a one animal per house kind of kitty.

hehe.. well how about these names? Chibbers, or Furskins? they where my two cats names I had a very long time ago.. Chibbers was named that because of his unusual cat yowel (a studder in his meow/yowel) , and Furskins was named that because her tail almost had no hair on it (skin condition) and arnt possums bald on there tails? :)

Why not name your possum Possum, but in a different language?

French - sarigue
Russian - опоссум

hmmm....I guess that wasn't such a good idea because every other language was either possum or opossum...lol :brickwall

I like the chocolate names, but then again, I like chocolate.

Here is my possom story...I was laying out in the yard getting sun one day when I heard something in the back bushes. Behind my parents' bushes was a construction company (and all their junk). I thought it was a stray cat nosing around so I say "Here kitty, kitty." No, it was a possom. It stuck it's head out from under the bushes and about scared me to death. Personally I think they look like big rats. I'd probably just name it Kitty for the fun of it. :)

I didn't get a picture of it. The first time I saw it was yesterday and I didn't have my camera.

Now if you're REALLY curious, you can do a www.google.com search real quick for short tailed opossum.

It doesn't look like OUR possums, with the white face and the size of a cat. It will never get that big. 5 ounces would be huge for this type of possum. She's from Brazil... likes hot humid weather.

I am really liking the name ideas and the stories! That's too funny Wishing4! (But I always thought possums were ADORABLE.)

I had a pair of choclate gerbils called Cacao and Theo. The Coco tree's latin name is Theobroma cacao.

continuing with the chocolate theme how about
Snickers?

Ooh, Snickers is good...
Val, congratulations! I LOVE opossums! We have a big wild whitey who comes onto the deck at night. I leave him food whenever DH isn't looking. :greybiggr I hold Tiger up so we can watch him out the window together. They are so exotic - not in the rat family - actually marsupials, isn't wild! - but they look so ratlike to me. I bet he makes a great pet.
Naming is tough. I try to figure out what the animal's name is (ala the musical Cats - every cat has a secret name), but let's see what comes to the top of my head....

Olox
Yoey
Nik Nik
Bika

I just googled your guy - he's adorable, as I expected. Here's a cool fact: The tail is prehensile and can not only be used as a means of balance when climbing and anchoring the animal to a tree branch, but it can also be used as another hand to carry nesting materials.

And while you might have seen it, for everyone, here's a great link, includes info on raising them. Says they make gentle, loving pets, so Val, enjoy!

Well, if it's a boy, you could name him "Red Green" (for the show "Red Green" with the Possum lodge!)...for a girl, I would name her "Princess Pirlipat" (it's from E.T.A. Hoffman's "The Nutcracker" but it SOUNDS like a cool possum name, doesn't it?) ...

There's also a jug band called "Fat Possum"...or, you could name the possum "Moritati" -- latin for "playing dead" (I believe)...

I'd go for something like Fido, or Brutus.

But then again, Snickers is so very cute.

What's your prairie dog's name?

I had two dogs named Adam and Eve.

The prairie dogs names are Big Mama and Baby Girl. I didn't name them, Scott did.

All such good names! He's been calling her Whiskers but isn't happy with that name.

I *doubt* I'll be getting pictures of her because I REALLY don't want to go over to his place. Trying NOT to spend any time with him! I know this cute little possum is a ploy to get me over to his house. Not goina happen! But I told him I'd help name her. She really is cute.

Axium! Those were cool facts! I knew they could climb and balance with their tails but the thought of her carrying nesting material with it is HEE HAW funny!!! She's already stolen $3, his credit card and other assorted objects to make nests with. Quite crafty.

Wow, sounds adorable. Theft ain't charming in people, but it sure is endearing in our pets :silly:
