View Full Version : BookCrossing

sounds like an interesting concept, though i've never used it. you register with them, get a unique number for the book you want to "release", put the number in the book and the url for bookcrossing, then release it..either by giving it away, donating it, or just leaving it somewhere that someone's likely to find it and decide to read it. when someone catches your book, they hopefully write a review of it on bookcrossing..and then you're aware it was read. then they pass it on.
it also seems to be a great place to find real people (not critics) writing reviews.

Teacherbear March 16th, 2003, 07:41 PM What a TOTALLY cool idea!!!!!! :) 8)
Thanks for sharing it Drui!! :)
I'm trying to figure out what books I could "release"! :)
snippet March 16th, 2003, 08:59 PM That is a really neat idea! Here at work we have an impromptu library. So many of us are traveling for work, so we've left books that we read and no longer need for others stuck on airplanes and waiting in airports. Most of them are Clancy-type stuff. It's a nice idea, especially for the younger airmen who can't afford to drop 6-7 bucks for a book.
I wonder if those books count?

I don't see why they wouldn't count! Heck, it counts if you just send them to a friend or give them to your mother!!! I say register the books! :)
Such a cool idea! :)
Anne March 17th, 2003, 11:50 PM I used to do that all the time, with one exception, I didn't have a way to know who read my used books, but I used to leave them on park benches, in stores, libraries, etc. I even used to throw them on peoples driveways!

the website says you can give them to friends..the idea is to just get the books in motion. you give it to a friend or coworker, and then they pass it on. you can register those books to get a number to keep track of how far the book has gone.
druidess73 March 18th, 2003, 04:46 AM i guess i just like to hold onto my books..but then i could pare down my collection. there are only a few authors that i expect to revist multiple times.
snippet May 22nd, 2003, 10:17 AM Ok, I just signed up at BookCrossing. I'm really excited about doing this! I've got to print some labels, decide which books I'm releasing and then figure out where I'm releasing them.
If anyone is already a member, add snippet :deal: (duh, I'm so clever with the nickname) to your friends list!
There is even a way to track books in a ring, where you loan it to one and they send it to two and then to three and finally it gets sent back to the originator. We could do that for hair books!
Also, I've got to talk to the commander about making our little library a BookCrossing Zone. :argue:
I'm hyped!
Grey_Lady July 16th, 2004, 06:58 PM I just signed up for this. I think it's a great idea! It's interesting, and it'll get people to read. My username is utburd if anyone wants to add me to their friends list. :) I'm registering books right now to release.
Vampberry November 17th, 2004, 04:43 AM I signed up today. Nick is the same as here since I'm lazy and use it everywhere.. There's only one book for me to release at the moment though.
Has anyone ever found a book that's been registered at bookcrossing?
snippet November 24th, 2004, 10:01 PM I've slacked off from bookcrossing a lot. It's a super idea and sure does clean out that bookshelf, but I haven't gotten many posts from people finding my books. It's disappointing that you don't get any feedback from the recipient. www.wheresgeorge.com is much more fun. Mark your dollars and watch them travel.
auntiejen November 25th, 2004, 03:41 PM  Where's George, that's funny, I'd forgotten all about that. I got several Georges and Willies through my till, but didn't have Internet at the time so couldn't check it out.
I'm signed up at BookCrossing simply because I'm forever trying to get people to read. So often I'll mention a book - most notably anything by Stephen King - and people will say, "Oh, I saw the movie..." :shake:
I don't care if any of my books ever show up on the site as 'caught'. I've released two so far, and when I checked back both books were gone, so someone picked them up and is hopefully reading them or passing them on to someone who will. I think it's a lovely idea.
