Do you leave the fridge open or shut it when you're making a sandwich for yourself?

I shut it, or it shuts itself. For reasons best known to someone else, our fridge tilts backwards. And I was always told to shut the fridge.

Is this fuel for a fight with hubby or something? "Dear, EVERYONE leaves the fridge open, it makes it easier to get out only what you need and then put stuff back. Didn't your mother ever teach you ANYTHING?"

I close it. I've had my cat jump in one time; and my dog has been known to grab a snack while the kids are 'deciding' on what they are hungry for.

I close it only because I'm a cheapskate with electricity. It's probably a throwback to when I was a kid and used to stand there with the door open perusing the contents. My mom would walk by and ask what I was up to--trying to cool the kitchen perhaps?

If anyone watches it, there's an episode of "Third Watch" where Faith comes home from working her shift and takes everything out of the refrigerator to make the kids lunches for the next day. I swear the scene is five-seven minutes long where she's standing there with the door open, fixing sandwiches, and arguing with her husband. It drives me INSANE!! I want to reach into the TV and close it!

I shut it - partly because I'm a cheapskate and want to save on electricity, but more because I've been brought up to care for the environment by not wasting energy. So I also switch off lights, only put as much water in the kettle as I am going to use and so on. I'm also a reuse/recycle addict - nothing gets wasted in this house :D

Definitely closed. My mother was the second coming of Scrooge so I was brought up to be hyper-aware of my usage of things such as electricity, water, etc. I'm kind of glad for this because as KT mentioned it makes good ecological sense. Plus there's much more I'd rather spend money on!

All this said, our gas and electric bill has been nearly $300 each month this winter. Abnormally frigid winters and astronomical gas prices spells financial disaster :x

I voted both. I shut it now, for reasons KT listed above, but when I was younger I used to regularly "cool the kitchen." ;) I am more vigiliant about shutting it in summer than winter, btw.

For all the same reasons that everyone else that shuts it, I shut it too.

I also shut it because Jack will stick his nose in anything within reach if it's open for any length of time :)
That's truly one of his bad habits - he's mighty interested in what's in the cold box!

I'd say that I shut it.....although I
DO keep it open for a while
inspecting what's inside that
is good to eat! :)

I shut it. I'm not one to waste electricity. I live in Southern California. I can't afford to!

I shut the refrigerator door while preparing food, but have a very bad habit of putting stuff back in the fridge one thing at a time, rather than waiting until I'm finished with everything. Opening and closing the door several times is probably not much better than just leaving it open.

I personally shut the door, only because my sandwich
takes a while.

I have to clean the chicken breast,
get out the lettuce or wash the spinach
leaves if we have any, get out the George Foreman,
get out the cheese, the mayo or the sandwich dressing
(Beano's Original Submarine Dressing)
and slice the avocado if we have any and
slice the 'maters.

When I make a sandwich, I make a macho sandwich. LOL

For those of you who leave the fridge open,

This is a neat site with some interesting fridge stuff, including
a test to see how many times a day your door is open
and how long. Quite interesting if you're bored. :D

If I'm raiding the fridge at night, I make my sandwich by the light of the fridge :D

it shuts on me, otherwise I would 'prolly leave it open! The door swinging shut on me actually drives me nuts! I want it open! Who's the manipulative guy who designed my fridge?

wow! im amazed at how many do keep it open. Keeping the fridge door OPEN never even crossed my mind. LOL I guess I always saw it as a commen sence thing. close it behind you, turn it off, put it away. LOL Even my kids close the fridge automaticly. hmmm I have never had to tell them to close it.. must be just different places where people live? I have heard that in Europe that a piece of pie is eaten differnt than here.. I for example take my first bite from the smallest corner of the pie right at the end.. not the crust end.. where some places will start with the crust first. hmm I hear another pole question coming on :!:

I eat my pie by the pointy part first, too. :D

I shut it because I paid for that coolness, and because my kitchen tilts a little that way, so I don't have to do anything. It takes me a long time to make a sandwich, too.

...my dog has been known to grab a snack while the kids are 'deciding' on what they are hungry for...

That got me laughing out loud.

My boyfriend's roommates have 4 little dogs who are insatiably curious about ANY goings' on in the kitchen. One is exceptionally sly about the refrigerator, and if you don't have a strategically placed foot, she WILL grab a snack if one is within reach.

For the record, I close the refrigerator door. I don't make sandwiches, but I do make extravagant salads and I pull all the ingredients out before I start, and put them all away at the same time. Spinach, green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, turkey, cheddar, brocolli, and feta from the fridge, and dried cranberries, sundried tomatos and turkey jerky from the cabinet. And people have the gall to ask why I don't use salad dressing. :silly:

I shut it....mostly 'cause I'm afraid that little critters will get in there.

I have left it open on a very rare occasion..but if I leave it open more than 5 seconds, I start to feel very wrong.

If I'm going to be more than a minute, then I shut the fridge. Our fridge beeps after a minute. And if I'm doing something quick, I'm generally using the top of the door of the fridge as a table

I do try not to leave the fridge door open - especially in summer. I figure it affects the quality of your food if the temperature is going up and down.

Pull out all fixings, close door, dump stuff on counter, make sandwich, put everything back.

Not so hard.

I'm a door shutter! :)

Usually shut it, but it depends. Sometimes I just stand there with it open looking through it. And I tend to leave it open if I'm unloading groceries into it. But that's different.

Both. It depends on the sandwich, really...

If it requires a lot of stuff, I try to take stuff out, close the door, make the sandwich, then put stuff back. If it's just bread, meat, and cheese (or thereabout), I'll stand *at* the fridge and make the sandwich, door wide open.

Hmm...just thought of this, but if I'm getting something to drink, I'll take the pitcher out, go pour it in the glass, put it back in the fridge, and *then* close the door. But other than that and the 'make sandwich at fridge', I do generally try to remember to close it, so I think the option of 'both' still works.

I picked both.
If i had my way i'd leave it open, but mum always tells me to shut it.
