View Full Version : How often do you dust ends?

I was just wondering how often people do the dusting job and how they tackle and go about dusting split ends. How do you manage the parts or do a random search and destroy?

I voted rarely ever. I consider a dusting as different from an S&D mission. The dusting is all across the hem, the S&D is through out the length.

I've been pretty bad about not even doing S&D missions. I need both a dusting and an S&D mission pretty soon. Maybe in June.

I'm not sure what to answer. I give myself about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch trim every six months. I never do split end trims. I don't seem to get splits (or maybe I can't see them, but I don't think that's it).

For the first couple of years when I was growing my hair out, I got the ends trimmed quite frequently (every month or so).

Then I went for a period of 2+ years with no trims at all, and it didn't look any worse for wear. I've had one trim in the last four years (it was in October 2003), and I think my hair's doing OK.

I chose "rarely ever," because I've not done it even once yet, due to lack of splits to trim.

I didn't vote, because I'm still on my first search-and-destroy mission, which has turned out to be a series of protracted skirmishes that take up all of my free time.

I have lots of very fine hair, and it seems like there are BILLIONS of them. I'll give an update if I ever catch up.

Longterm, the plan is (if I get all the split ends out, that is) to trim the bottom edge ¼" a month. But I want it to grow a couple of inches first, because it gets harder to put up when I shorten it.

Like Tbear, I consider a dusting to be different from snipping hair with splits or white dots. I *wish* my splits were confined to only the ends, but since my hair is damaged they occur anywhere along the hair shaft.

I don't have a regular schedule for trimming/dusting the ends. I cut off 6 inches between December and March, so my ends rarely have splits. Now I just do weekly S&D missions to snip any hairs that have white dots & are about to break off.

Hmmm, now I'm going to have to ask around as to the definition of "dusting." I always considered it the same thing as a split ends search & destroy mission. I guess when I dust my house, I dust everything high and low, not just end tables and other lower furniture, so I figured hair dusting includes high and low portions of my hair. Otherwise, for evening up the ends a bit, I call small trims "microtrims," meaning 1/8-1/4-1/2 an inch.

I usually do S&D missions while in the car on lengthy trips when someone else is driving, but such trims are rare, as splits are few and far between, and I never do this on any hair above my hips, as I just don't get splits that high up.

:ponder: I wasn't sure how to vote because I don't get many splits on the ends; they occur mostly in the hairs in the middle that are still growing out. A few months ago, I did a total dusting twice, which took almost two hours each time. Now,whenever I see a split end I snip it off, no regular schedule.

I do S&D missions almost every day for some time. I love snipping off splits. It feels so rewarding.
(not sure if S&D is the same eas dusting-sometimes I have cut a few inches off it the split occurs higher up the shaft-but that's the only thing I have been doing with my hair; I had a trim 6months ago and I have been only S&Ding my hair since then and it works-splits are getting rarer and rarer this days )

:rockerdud I almost never trim split ends since a split left alone will usually become uneven as it migrates toward the edge of the hair shaft. It will then stop when it reaches the edge of the hair shaft.

I may have voted wrong. I'm not sure. I think of dusting as the same thing as Search and Destroy. I do that several times a week. I look for splits as I watch tv in the evening. I get a lot so I need to be dilligent in getting rid of them. THis year I've been getting hemline trims with the MM calendar.

I think I agree with Absalom that split ends themselves are not actually causing a problem. I see them as the effect of damaged hair, and not the cause in any sense. Nevertheless, I've decided to try to clip them all out as much as possible, because they're very visible in my hair.

I voted "once a week" but that's not really accurate. It's really, whenever I have a few minutes to kill and think about it. Usually while I'm sitting in my car waiting for one of my guys. I use my split-ender monthly, but do random S&D randomly as well.

I had to say rarely ever since scissors have only touched my hair 2 times in the past 3 years and both times were in March 04.

The first time was right after I started my journal I finally decided to try a S&D type trim and I went through the front right portion of my hair and snipped individual splits while my computer was taking a long time to defragment.

Then a few days later I trimmed my hair using Feye's slight U

I don't know if I will actually do the twisting type of dusting. I don't even know if I will try S&D again. My hair does need some higher up splits trimmed but I don't know if I will do that yet.

I will continue to do Feye's trims when I feel the need. I really liked the results I got with that.

Whatever the case I have no plans to let a stylist trim or cut my hair anytime in the future. Not because I don't trust them, but because I can trim my own. I wouldn't mind letting an LHC family member give me a trim though. If I needed one. I'd also not mind doing the same for them.

So that's my answer for now. :)

I voted rarely or never ... the last one. I don't really have a problem with split ends, at least not yet. We'll see what happens as my hair grows. I have been having trouble learning all the terminology that is thrown around on the board as well. Is there a LHC dictionary somewhere that I haven't found yet????

I will usually do a S&D whenever my combs start to get "hung up" in my hair. I'll snip about 100 or so a day, every day, until the combs glide through my hair again.

*I try to limit myself to 100 splits at a time -it's so easy to get obsessive over this and spend much more time !*

I voted once a month. I try to stick to the MM lunar charts the last couple of months. Before I didn't do a dusting for a year or two, and I can see that now with the damage. It is time to catch up and make the ends healthy again.

I have been on a massive S&D mission since joining this community, but I am not really finding any splits. I don't seem to have hair that splits much. So I have to say from here on out I will rarely be dusting, if ever.
