View Full Version : For those who mostly wear their hair up
AmberBella April 15th, 2004, 09:34 AM This poll was spurred by a comment Lady Godiva made. What length did you start wearing your hair predominantly up?
For me, I started wearing it up more than 50 percent of the time when it reached waist length. It would be down some of the day, then up some of the day. I could never keep it down all day....always had to have a scrunchie with me. I don't know if it was really tangles that caused me to put it up...I really think it was just to get the crazy lot out of the way.
Anyway...when did it start to go up....what caused you to start putting it up?
Queenie April 15th, 2004, 10:10 AM I was at mid-back when I found out about long hair boards and when I got more involved - obsessed - with hair, so that's about the time I started to wear it up most of the time.
KateMcC April 15th, 2004, 10:13 AM I started wearing it up after it got longer than shoulder length because of the heat, and also, to keep my ends out of the pool while teaching water aerobics and swimming lessons. Realized it was easier, faster, and so much cooler in the summer months.
BigChiefHoho April 15th, 2004, 10:27 AM I picked "the moment I could." I currently wear it up in a bun or ponybun or ponytail (does that count as up?) about 60% of the time. It gets in my way and is really hot if I leave it down. I'll probably wear it down more in the winter. Towards the end of this past winter, I was wearing it down just so it would protect my ears... Handy stuff.
Jaynyne April 15th, 2004, 10:41 AM Like Chief, I voted "from the moment I could." However, I loooong for the day that my hair returns to BSL or longer so that I can wear it in secure, attractive updos. Now, it's either a pony tail or log roll twist. I tried to make a bun today (with my first hair sticks) and it was pretty good when it was wet, but as it has dried, all the ends have come out...I can feel it, but can't imagine how horrendous it looks.
One of the most comforting things I discovered on this board is that it is OK for people with long hair to wear it up. Through the years, whenever I have gotten a trim, I've reminded the stylist that it has to be long enough to be pulled back. (I have finally found a great stylist, BTW). And if I had a dollar for every time I heard, "If you're going to wear it up, you may as well have short hair." Grrrrrrrr. I began to think that way, though. Luckily, I found you guys and now I know better than to doubt myself like that.
Madeleine April 15th, 2004, 11:03 AM I voted Bra Strap. I had my hair between shoulder and BS for years cause that's where the ends are still reasonably "thick". When it grew longer the ends started to be so wispy that I think it looks better up than down.
Now I enjoy the look of updos even on others more than hair worn loose - even if their hair is thick and gorgeous and definitely pretty when worn down, too. I just have this thing for updos.
And of course I agree with Jaynyne, updos do not look the same as short hair. What a load of BS (no, not "bra strap" here). And besides, to change the look of short hair you need styling products, to change the look of updos you need hair toys. I rather spend my money on a collection of beautiful jewels than on jars of icky yucky goo ;)
BigChiefHoho April 15th, 2004, 11:24 AM "If you're going to wear it up, you may as well have short hair." Grrrrrrrr. I began to think that way, though.
And see, there's the beauty of long hair. You can wear it up and out of the way, just like short hair, or you can wear it down and loose and flowing. And they say long hair doesn't have variety...
Rain April 15th, 2004, 04:51 PM I left it mostly down until it got to waist, then I started wearing it mostly in half up styles. I just recently started wearing it up most of the time. I think I found these boards at about the same time my hair got to tailbone length and that's also when I started feeling that my hair was more in my way than not...so maybe a few weeks ago.
Carolyn April 15th, 2004, 05:23 PM I voted for BS length but BS on me is longer than mid back. I wasn't sure which one to pick. I wear it up on windy days and hot days and days I work. It gets in the way at work and I could have a hair accident so I want to protect it. It often starts out down and then the scrunchie comes out and up it goes. If it's the second day after washing it starts out up as it's too greasy to wear down and loose. Usually its a pony or a braid. It's so nice to be able to do that. I feel sorry for short hair people who don't have all our style options.
Igor April 15th, 2004, 11:37 PM ”The moment I could”
My hair grows straight down in my eyes and I need to put it up to see!
So as soon as I could, up it went

I don't know if this counts as wearing it up, but I started wearing my hair in a ponytail or a braid as soon as I could. It seems to keep the tangels down and my hair out of the way. Once I learned how to french braid my hair that is the way I wear it most now.

Lady Godiva April 16th, 2004, 04:33 AM Goodness, me little thought caused a delightful stir! :bluesmile
I wore braids until my hair was classic length - or even longer - before I started regularly wearing my hair in updos. I would have spared myself a lot of detangling had I started earlier. :brickwall
Jennifer Eve
Shelly April 16th, 2004, 04:40 AM I started wearing my hair in a bun 99% of the time when I was at BSL because my hair gets damaged so easily. I wish there was a way to totally get rid of all the damage but with my hair it is just impossible.
Daneille April 16th, 2004, 04:58 AM I started with half up (tiny bun with hairsticks) simply because that was all I could get up. I really can't stand hair hanging in my face so it is much more comfortable and out of the way. As soon as the rest was long enough it went up too. I think it has protected my ends during the growing out process as well.
Daneille
SagittarianTiger April 16th, 2004, 01:50 PM I put as soon as I could. Updoing constantly has helped my ends as I grow out, and has saved me from chopping it all off on bad hair days too!
Chamomile betty April 18th, 2004, 04:52 AM I voted the moment I could :flower:
I have always worn my hair up even when it was just at shoulder length. I have a bit of a baby face and always felt an updo made me look more mature and professional. I still feel that way at 30 lol
I love wearing my hair up. Since it has gotten longer I can now do different styels. So I will continue to enjoy wearing my hair up :wethree:
Angel Hugs and Love
Poledra April 18th, 2004, 07:11 AM I voted shoulder, but I'm not entirely sure. My hair has always been just below shoulder length, but I usually wore it up in a ponytail or messy bun until my hair got too long for that. I found that it was in my face, or huge and frizzy, so I have been wearing it up more pretty much for as long as I can remember.

songofsunlight April 21st, 2004, 05:47 PM It was at tailbone length that I began to wear my hair up. This was only because it was around this length that I discovered how to do so. Before I figured out how to make a sucessful updo in my hair, I always wore my hair loose or braided and that remains my everyday preference now at classic length.
When I do wear my hair up, it is heavy and I am not convinced that an updo is less damaging to the overall health of my hair and scalp. I have a lot of hair that does not like to be restrained in a gravity-defying updo and my tresses seem hardy enough to be worn unbound, at least for now.
I also lack concern about wearing my hair down in public when it is being oiled, in half a dozen braids, or otherwise looking :silly:.
I ask my husband, do you mind going out with a :jestor:?
He answers :flowers: ... what a peach!

exclusively di April 27th, 2004, 07:33 PM I voted BS, my reason was that I am just too warm a person to wear it down most of the time. If I am comfortable every one else is wearing a coat or heavy sweater. So, I learned to wear my hair up a lot. I love it. That's part of what having long hair is all about, putting it up! I love fooling with it. It can be so elegant, flirty, goofy, whatever your mood is, you can do it. When I had short hair, it was all one style, basically, (you know, BORING). This way, I have whatever I can coax it into for the day. And that isn't even mentioning what happens when you start putting the pretties in!! Oh yeah!!!!!
dancingbarefoot April 27th, 2004, 08:55 PM I started wearing my hair in a braid as soon as I could, but even at BS-length, most updos were beyond me. I think the thicker the hair, the longer it needs to be for updos. I could do French twists at slightly longer than BS, but a bun was still out of the question - the hair just wouldn't make one complete wrap to form a bun.
Sarah April 27th, 2004, 09:17 PM Mine is almost classic length, and I still wear it down quite a bit. I do put it in a ponytail pretty often, maybe about half the time, but I don't know if I'd count that as "up". With shorter hair, and a higher ponytail I would, but I wear low ponytails, so it's more like just pulling it back than up. So I'd call it something in between an updo and wearing it down and loose.
In the summer I wear updos fairly often, though, especially if the air conditioning isn't keeping up with the heat.
I answered waist lenght for the poll, because I suppose that's when I started wearing it up or in a ponytail more than I used to.
FlyBabyTina June 5th, 2004, 06:44 AM I voted as soon as I could. My hair is thick and hot and in my face when I wear it down. I enjoy wearing it down but I also enjoy trying new updos too. Once my hair gets longer to where it will stay behind my shoulders I will probably wear it down more. I am figuring that will be after summer and it won't be as hot then.. :)
Tiffanie June 21st, 2004, 03:47 PM I chose waist length, but I've almost always had long hair so I've not been in a growing out phase like some of you. I usually put it up to get it out of my way, not in an effort to protect it, but now that I've been checking in here, I think I'm going to be more conscious about keeping it up.
Chameleon June 21st, 2004, 04:15 PM Bs length. I didn't wear my hair in updos until I discovered this board 1 month ago.
harpgal June 22nd, 2004, 10:08 AM Since I can remember, I've worn my hair in a single braid. However when it got to waist length, I began to wear it up more often. It just gets in my way too often and I can't stand hair tickling my nose while I am doing housework or working in the garden.
Denise June 25th, 2004, 11:09 AM I had to think about this for a while....I'd say it was at classic length since I kept it there for years while I grew out my bangs (in the '90's).
Denise
ladykemma June 30th, 2004, 01:33 PM i am a warm person, hot when everyone else has on a sweater.
I started growing it long when I joined the SCA. I have a friend who has floor length hair. I asked "what is the trick?", she said hair sticks and putting it up every day for protection.
So I did, and I am seeing visible results from her advice and the advice I got on this board. I still have to wash every other day, or it gets too gross.
kissedbyfyre July 7th, 2004, 06:08 PM BSL because that was a length I HATED. I hated that it was such a damned inbetween stage and I hated the fact it wouldn't stay behind my shoulders and if I didn't have it up, it would get in everything. The trick of pulling it over one shoulder wouldn't even work cuz one side wouldn't reach the opposite shoulder, so my vision would end up shrouded in red. So I started bunning at about that time. It was probably up more then than it is now because I'm a bit more proud of my length now and it's *shock* more managable!! The pulling it over one shoulder to keep it out of the way while I bend down trick works if I lightly twist it.
BSL drove me crazy. It's one of those stages I remember to keep myself from chopping.
Zoo July 9th, 2004, 02:30 PM I hit the wrong one and ended up voting shoulder length ...I acutally started wearing at least part of it up as soon as I could. I can't stand my hair being in my face for very long although i have somewhat adjusted to the single lock of bang i have that refuses to stay up and out of the way. I hate the heaviness on my neck as well when it is hot out. I started out putting what i could in a half up with combs and then made my way to french braids as soon as possible. Now at bsl I stick it up in whatever decides it will stay up in for the day.
brunette July 10th, 2004, 12:48 AM I can't really remember, but I think I wore it up more when I reached BS so I chose that.
I remember feeling that I wanted to always wear it up until it grew to amazing lengths, as I felt somehow inadequate that it was 'only' BS, but now that I am nearer waist (when wet at least, it loses length with the curl/wave when dry) I try to wear it down at least once a week and I love the attention it draws. It still doesn't feel 'long enough' to me but I am trying to not feel bad about it. I'm trying my best to enjoy the journey and so far it is working!
Sapphire'sWings July 15th, 2004, 05:25 PM As soon as I could make a ponytail or bun. That would be,shoulder length. There was a time when I liked wearing my hair loose all the time. But it is so hot!I can't wear it loose all day anymore. It bothers my neck so much.Plus,my hair gets tangled very easily. It got tangled up badly back when my hair was really dry!
SeaPhoenix August 24th, 2004, 12:31 AM As soon as possible for me... military - sooo, means hair has to be above the collar in uniform. It was to my hips this past winter - but then I cut it back to mid back - it's creeping to waist length again. Folks are usually surprised when they see my hair down off duty - apparently long hair + military isn't a very common thing lol.
KarenLynn August 24th, 2004, 03:00 AM Soon as I could. I hate when it gets in my face so I can't see what I'm doing. Some days I start off having it down, but by lunch it's usually up. I always have hairtoys with me - scrunchie, small elastic, Fakkare, small clips...
I usually try to let it dry down to avoid weird kinks, but quite often I give up on that too. Like right now.
Irishred August 24th, 2004, 03:46 AM The moment I could because I have an 8month old. She loves my hair. It can tickle, feel soft and most of all it is fun to GRAB AND YANK !!! Fortunately she learned really fast the mommy saying OOUCH!!! meant it was time to let go.
I wore low or braided ponys until rescently I have been able to bun with a jawclip more.

psimons December 29th, 2004, 11:24 AM I voted as soon as I could. Really, before I should have. Little ponytails with barrettes on the side like a 10 year old. But it is longer now and I wear it up every day since I can now do great buns, etc. It is so humid here in the summer, that before I decided to grow it long I cut it really short each summer just for relief. Now I don't have to. Yay!
Meg_Evenstar December 29th, 2004, 12:34 PM I started wearing my hair up when it hit mid back. I needed it up and out of my way.
Meg
Stevy December 29th, 2004, 01:31 PM I voted midback, but I'd have started earlier if I'd known how. A kind French Exchange student showed me how to put my hair in a bun when I was seventeen - if it wasn't for her I'd probably have gone around with my hair down until I discovered the Internet!
Alva January 15th, 2005, 12:09 PM I have been putting it up when it reached midback mostly. Now I am a few inches from tailbone and I still have it up a lot. But it is good for my hair I noticed. Had more damage before than now.
Volkswillow January 15th, 2005, 12:38 PM I voted Shoulder - would have been the moment I could, really, only I don't think I ever couldn't in some form or another! I did try to when it was chin length, but it looked silly!
nicolezoie January 15th, 2005, 12:49 PM I wore mine down nearly all the time until it reached tailbone - after that it was up all the time or nearly so. However I really have been wearing my hair up in a knot bun since it was long enough to do it, which I think was about BSL or so.
Canadianchik January 16th, 2005, 06:49 PM I've actually just started wearing my hair up. It is almost bra strap length and I like it up now. It never used to stay up but it does now. I'm not sure what is different other than I put it up when it is wet.
slord January 16th, 2005, 07:00 PM i wear my hair up most of the day. i work with kids and when they get angry, they'll grap whatever they can. i had one little girl grab ahold of my hair and would not let go! i was standing there with this three year old child dangling from my hair! so i learned quickly, when around little ones, it the hair goes up!
LILBERT January 17th, 2005, 04:06 AM I picked as soon as i could. I onlt really found the long hair boards when my hair was creeping towards BSL, but i used to put it in a ponytail before anyhow.
predislava January 20th, 2005, 04:26 PM Right around bra strap length, I started braiding my hair regularly (I was a little kid at the time). As I got older, and my hair got longer, I strated wearing updo's pretty much 98% of the time.
~Slava
federico_rossi January 25th, 2005, 02:43 AM I put my hair up as soon as I could!
My mother did that to my hair when I was young, and I understood how good it is!
Bye
enna January 25th, 2005, 03:58 AM I love wearing my hair down, don't get me wrong, but I have to say that I wear it up a lot too. I voted for BSL, because it was about that length, perhaps a little shorter, when I started working at Best Buy. Until then, I hadn't worn Polo shirts (or much of anything with a collar) since high school (I know I'm only in college now, but it had been years.) My hair would rub against the collar and get damaged and seriously tangled, even if I had it in a ponytail. So of course, not thinking about the damage, only the tangles, I put it in a high ponytail without pulling it all though, you know, so its a loop and ends hanging off my head, about a third of the actual length. That kept it clear of the collar and tangles. Of course, since I found this side I've sworn off ponytail holders except for loose, low ponytails and securing the ends of my braid. I still have it braided a lot (whenever I start the day with it down, it's inevitably braided by the end of the day) but as often I have it in a cinnimon bun, figure 8 bun, or braided and the braid pinned to a bun on the back of my head.
kirstin January 25th, 2005, 04:36 AM I'd wear my hair down all the time, but putting it up prevents it from getting damaged.

masterbraider January 25th, 2005, 08:42 AM Wow! Great braids Igor and Danielle. Looks like Igor has incredible thick hair. I am jealous. I love my very long hair but I love wearing it up. Sometimes people ask me why I keep it so long when all I do is wear it up.. Hmm It is very striking in one of my wonderful braid styles. People often comment on it. And it is very dramatic on the rare occasion that I wear it down. The possible number of updos is greatly increased by the lenght of my hair. There are so many great reasons to have long hair.
amiaow January 29th, 2005, 11:09 PM I wear mine up all the time except when I'm sleeping. I would have it down more often except I find it extremely irritating- I can't stand having hair in my face!! I also find that if it's down I play with it all the time. So it's hair up for me!
curls2grow January 30th, 2005, 03:23 AM I chose "as soon as I could" -- and it's thanks to all of you :flower: . Never would have occurred to me to even try to mess with my hair before reaching shoulder length, had it not been for all of the great instructions and pics showing how-to's and, of course the hairtoys. :hollie:
natural one January 30th, 2005, 09:12 AM i started wearing it up a lot when it reached shoulder. i worked in foodservice and it was that or a hairnet *shudder*. i also starting wearing it braided to sleep in around the same time.
sevedra February 28th, 2005, 05:36 PM The instant it was long enough! I love wearing it up. I am practising new styles all the time. When it is longer, I will already be good at all the twisting and pinning necessary!!
Magenta March 8th, 2005, 11:47 PM I voted waist this is from before I cut my hair off! I started wearing it up all the time so I could wash it less than every other day and wouldn't play with it!
Tree March 9th, 2005, 12:45 AM I voted classic, though really it was longer than that. I did take the question to mean really up, not just a ponytail though.
When I was in college and had my hair cut to waist length I wore it down a lot. It was so thick and had such a slippery texture that I had a horrible time trying to put it up. As it grew it got much easier. By the time it was classic length I could make a bun that would stay up all day.
Mostly I wore my hair in a ponytail or some variety of braid until it was past my knees. Updos like buns were just occasional things for variety. When my hair was about hip-length I learned to do French braids on myself. I was very fond of them and wore some variety of French braid (or braids) quite frequently for many years.
These days I wear a bun with hairsticks much of the time. I still like a single braid better, but the bun takes so much less time to do. (And I'm not a morning person. )
ElenTikvah March 9th, 2005, 07:48 PM voted: from the moment i could
tho it all depends on what you consider 'up'! :)
i've worn my hair in ponytails, ponybuns, scrunchie buns or cliptwists about 90% of the time since i can remember (not counting all the goldilocks curls or the elaborate princess leia buns that my mama styled when i was a girl) ... and i still do, tho over the last several weeks, i've begun to experiment with hairsticks to form buns and twists.

Kajol April 30th, 2005, 11:16 AM After finding LHC, so thats BSL.
Before that I had my hair in a ponytail, guess thats where my spits come from. :brickwall
Lalaith April 30th, 2005, 12:04 PM I started wearing my hair up the moment I could. When it was too short to put up, I'd straighten it all the time. Hopefully as it gets longer I'll be able to wear it down more without having it look poofy. :)
metafisica April 30th, 2005, 11:01 PM Actually, a couple of months ago when I first stumbled upon these boards. Since my hair is awefully layered and furhemore in that strange stage when it is starting to pass my shoulders, to make it look decent I used to blow fry and atraight iron it. After finding these boards I've discovered many things I can do with my hair. Now, I wear it almost always up.
desty nova April 30th, 2005, 11:57 PM I voted classic, but it was a little past there when i started to wear my hair up, actually I had worn it up let's say......5 times in my whole life until 1-1.5 month ago (and I don't wear it up that often, maybe 2-3 times a week at most)
Fia May 1st, 2005, 10:27 AM As soon as I could - somewhere between shoulder and shoulderblade length. For it was several reasons - keeping it out of the way when I work or spend time outdoors/at the gym/on the track/on the golf course, looking pulled together for work and hair health being the primary ones.
Cinnamon May 1st, 2005, 05:09 PM I was at shoulder length when I started wearing my hair up daily. :)
singindierain May 4th, 2005, 11:55 AM I started wearing my hair up more when it began getting caught in everything, about waist length. Now I wear it up almost everyday.
Michiru May 4th, 2005, 03:21 PM I started in nov. It didn't have anything to do with length but I just didn't know how to do a bun before! Now I wear my hair up if I'm going to be outside.
Meezer January 28th, 2006, 01:27 PM Bumpity bump!
I decided to do a search on this topic this evening b/c I'm noticing that my hair is usually up about 90% of the time now. Earlier today, I actually started questioning myself about this: Why grow my hair long, just to wear it up all of the time? So, I did a little search and was glad to see that I am not alone. Seems like most LHC'ers resort to some sort of daily updo. :D
zule January 28th, 2006, 06:03 PM I voted as soon as I could. My mainstay was a braid--no matter how short--pulled up and held in place with a slide. I wore my hair like that every day for a long time, eventually folding the braid a few times, since I knew of no other way to wear it up. I didn't count ponytails or plain braids as updos, although now I think they are.
Now that I can do a bun or two, I'll wear them if I'm not feeling insecure about them. I don't know why I feel that way, since the worst that can happen is that the sticks will fall out, I won't be able to put it back up, and I'll have to wear a scrunchie. So big deal! But some mornings I just have such trouble with hairsticks, it makes me laugh. Then, when I get home from work, I put my hair in a bun with hairsticks and it works the first time, easy as pie.
I think I have some kind of performance anxiety.
Wind January 28th, 2006, 06:26 PM When I found LHC, my hair was already waist length, so I started wearing it up right away. I had never really tried before.
Clare-Dragonfly January 28th, 2006, 07:08 PM I voted "tailbone". I would have said "the moment I could", but that would be a bit misleading, since it wasn't length that was the problem, it was me not knowing how to put my hair up. My hair has been at tailbone for a few years, but I only started putting it up a few months ago. And it's so much happier now :rockerdud
ETA: Meezer: My answer to your question is, "Well, if it's SHORT, you can't wear it UP!" :silly:
Igor January 29th, 2006, 12:39 AM Bumpity bump!

That question makes me want to ask back: Why have boobs if you always wear a bra?
No seriously, I really don’t see why growing hair long and then putting it up is somehow less grateful to the hair? Are we supposed to somehow “honour” the hair by always wearing it loose so we can show its long?
Up dos happen to be very practical and since most of us (except Dianyla of course  ) don’t have a Rapunzel tower to sit in and look pretty all day, this is what we do to keep our hair out of our everyday tasks.
Besides I find up dos can be varied for completely different looks and you will always find at least one to suit the occasion or your mood. You can be serious, cute, sexy librarian (bun! Yay!) casual, everything just by changing your up do.You can’t really do that with loose hair
Up dos can be done so they show off your best facial features, loose hair cant. Again, it just hangs there, not much you can do different with it
Another argument: Hair toys! :rockerdud Its just not the same with the little decorative things you can add to loose hair
I like my hair up :inlove:
E. January 29th, 2006, 01:58 AM Why grow my hair long, just to wear it up all of the time?
I sometimes wonder myself. For me it´s a combinationm of different reasons: I enjoy long hair, but can´t be bothered with it when I´m rushing around all day long. Plus, I somehow enjoy the little secret and coming home and taking it down ;)
trollkjerring January 29th, 2006, 02:11 AM I voted brastrap - cause I found this place at this length and didn't even think of buns before. Nobody wears buns or figure8's here, there are also no hairsticks or forks or Ficcares; only sometimes you can see this sportbuns on young women.
I have no problem now to be an outsider and love to wear my hair up all the time. It's good for the health of my hair and I can concentrate on the things I have to do all day long.

styg January 29th, 2006, 02:44 AM i honestly only see a neccesity for wearing hair up a lot at about hip length. it would have to be very windy for me to be bothered by anything shorter.
i honestly don't understand those with hair lengths between 20 and 30" (or even shorter eek) and wearing it up so frequently ... enjoy those lengths while it lasts!!! moreover i think you might not be able to wear your longer hair down at all if you're not even used to wearing short hair loose! i had this problem last year when i had an attack of hair stick glutony and wore it up far too much ... it was quite an adjustment to even wear it loose part of the day.

hairymonster January 29th, 2006, 03:47 AM I started wearing buns when looped ponytails became too long and heavy to stay secure, which was probably around BSL. I made do with a scrunchie bun till I managed to figure out how to tie my hair with a pencil
Elbereth January 29th, 2006, 04:54 AM The moment I could.
I have always loved how updos look. When I started to grow my hair, the first goal I thought of was "hair long enough to bun". When my hair was a bit above shoulder length, I managed to put it up with a claw clip, and up it has stayed ever since! I now have more selection with updos, and occassionally I wear a braided style. I wear my hair down very seldom- less than once a month. I don't like how it looks- I think I look boring and ordinary with my hair down. I especially don't like how it feels- my lightweight hair is everywhere, tangling, messy...in my way. Besides, almost every longhair I see IRL wears her hair down- I feel so special when I wear a nice updo with beautiful hairtoys. I find updos elegant, protective and beautiful. My hair stays neatly all day and...did I mention the hairtoys? :face: :inlove:
IMO, there's a world of difference between having a short hair and wearing long hair up.
curlycat January 29th, 2006, 05:35 AM I wear my hair up out of necessity most of the time. I wait tables and no one wants hair in their food.
Regarding the reason for keeping it long even though it's in updos: If my hair is short, I don't have as many choices. When it's long, I can wear it up, down and any variation thereof. Also, my hair is very heavy on my neck. When it's hot, I NEED it off my neck to stay cool. I can't get it off my neck when it's short.
Shell January 29th, 2006, 06:44 AM I wrote the moment I could, because it was what got me through the growing out process. I look terrible in headbands (pointy head?)
But since then, I have gone through phases. When it's hot, it's up; I hate the feel of hair sticking to my hot skin. I wear it up in the wind--obviously. But I wear my hair down a lot, especially the first few days after washing. I do enjoy how it feels, and I know when summer comes it'll go up.
I have had both short and long, and there is a world of difference. Updos are in and of themselves styles, and long hairs get to have two basic styles, down and up. There are many variations of those. Short hairs have fewer options (spiky, not spiky or maybe slicked back, not slicked back). As for "if you don't wear it down, it may as well be short," you know just because that stylist doesn't see it down, doesn't mean some people (important people) don't. Some people save their hair down for special occasions. 'Nough said.
darkwaves January 29th, 2006, 11:17 AM I voted shoulder. I guess I tied it back sometimes before then, half-ups or a ponytail if I needed it out of my face (in extreme wind, or a rare attempt at sports).
Once it reached shoulder, though, a whole world of possibilities and fun opened up. I've never been coordinated enough to manage bobby pins and fiddly styles, but with hair toys now all it takes is one fork, or one clip, so it's easy.
I really like my hair down, too, but right now I'm going through a "refuse to wear my hair down at work" phase. It might be interesting to explore why. I think it's because my hair is a highly personal, beautiful thing that I just don't feel like sharing with my colleagues, part of my private self that I don't have to bring to (can protect from) my job. Am I saying, "you think you know me, but you don't have a clue" to my current officemates? Or, is it just quicker in the mornings.
zule January 29th, 2006, 04:31 PM I think it's because my hair is a highly personal, beautiful thing that I just don't feel like sharing with my colleagues, part of my private self that I don't have to bring to (can protect from) my job. Am I saying, "you think you know me, but you don't have a clue" to my current officemates? Or, is it just quicker in the mornings. Not to hijack, but I love this!
ringuhair January 29th, 2006, 04:51 PM I voted shoulder-length because I was about 12 when it go to that length for the first time since my childhood... But this time around my hair was wavy (hormones, aren't they fun?) and very thick. I really didn't know what to do with all that frizz, so I wore it up and practically kept it there until I reached 20 years :D
Instantblue January 29th, 2006, 06:01 PM I chose "the moment I could!" I've always preferred to wear my hair up - it got too tangled and messy when I tried to wear it down in the past. Interestingly, though, now that I take better care of it, I have started to wear it down a little bit - maybe 10% of the time. It seems to behave better down when it's longer. But I definitely prefer it up!
papillon January 29th, 2006, 06:25 PM Well, I don't wear my hair up often at all. So far, it's only if the weather dictates, or if I feel I need to when I'm working in lab. But I started looking for easier ways to put my hair up when it hit my waist.
Forever Long January 29th, 2006, 06:36 PM I had to start wearing mine up pretty much all the time a couple of years ago because it was getting a lot of wear and tear at my job.
nick11082001 January 29th, 2006, 06:49 PM i started wearing my hair up the first time i could, if ponytails count that is, i was so excited the first time i could get my hair in a decent ponytail
Tiuhti January 30th, 2006, 01:46 AM I started wearing my hair up at shoulder length. If I want to wear my hair down I have to wash my hair in the morning, otherwise my hair will look messy.
Viviane January 30th, 2006, 01:52 AM the moment I could
MerryKat January 30th, 2006, 02:01 AM I was about 2" away from BSL when I found LHC. It was then that I started wearing my hair up more to protect the damaged ends. Thanks to LHC I also found out how to do all these stunning up do's.
Sedona January 30th, 2006, 05:55 AM I always try to wear my hair up, because it most feminine for me.
Madam Librarian January 30th, 2006, 06:36 AM I really like my hair down, too, but right now I'm going through a "refuse to wear my hair down at work" phase.
I think I just entered the same phase! For me, as my hair grows, I see it as more sensual. That has no place in a law firm  Anyway, your post has given me something to ponder. Thank you.
And to answer the poll, I chose 'the moment I could'. Just recently (the past month or so) I have seen my repertoire of updo's expand exponentially (!), so I am finally able to throw my hair up and be done with it.
Love Long Hair January 30th, 2006, 06:54 AM I chose "the moment I could!" I've always preferred to wear my hair up - it got too tangled and messy when I tried to wear it down in the past. Interestingly, though, now that I take better care of it, I have started to wear it down a little bit - maybe 10% of the time. It seems to behave better down when it's longer. But I definitely prefer it up!
you must tell about the updo in your avatar--LOVE IT!!!!!
13bodies January 30th, 2006, 07:40 AM My hair was BSL when I started wearing updos because I didn't learn how to do any until then.
At shoulder length I wore half-ups with part of my hair held with a barrette, and then I wore it french-braided for years until I learned how to make a simple bun. :blushing:
As to why I wear it up:
1. I HATE to have hair in my face.
2. My hair is hot and heavy and uncomfortable to wear down except when it's very cold out.
3. It tangles when it's loose.
pvtteeny February 3rd, 2006, 10:21 PM I've always had fun putting my hair up, and it really helps because I don't have a lot of patience for my hair when it's down, no matter how much I love it. I picked mid back though, because I remember a period (about 2 years) when I had just longer than shoulder length layers and I wore my hair down most of the time.
Adyta February 4th, 2006, 12:42 PM I voted waist length. That was when it started getting in the way too much. I wore it up about 50% of the time. I started wearing it up almost all of the time when it got to classic length because people started sitting on it and etc.

Zopf February 4th, 2006, 03:16 PM For me it was waist length, but not because the hair itself was too much to handle, but because any hair in the way at all would hinder my everyday work.
HairColoredHair February 4th, 2006, 04:08 PM Tailbone... because that's when I found LHC! I didn't know what else to do with it prior to finding this site, so it only went up when I'd be in a lab that day. And then it would be in a ponytail and down by five o' clock.
darkwaves February 4th, 2006, 06:23 PM I think I just entered the same phase! For me, as my hair grows, I see it as more sensual. That has no place in a law firm  Anyway, your post has given me something to ponder. Thank you. Thank you -- and thanks, Zule, too.
hijack ... maybe we should post a poll, re: how many people wear their hair up at work -- not to protect the ends, but to protect their... privacy? sensual inner selves? It might be interesting! Now, if I could figure out polls! /hijack
Katka February 6th, 2006, 05:36 AM I wear my hair up quite often since it reaches past my collarbones; before I wore a simple ponytail or a half-updo.
hannerbearr February 6th, 2006, 05:59 PM Once my hair got about half-way between BSL and waistlength, I started wearing it up most days.
Samara Morgan February 10th, 2006, 10:12 AM I voted for mid-back because that was roughly the length of my hair when I joined LHC and found out that wearing your hair down all the time was damaging to it :)
Snickles March 1st, 2006, 11:57 AM I'm not sure if my hair is really just that darn fragile or if I'm paronoid.
I started wearing my hair up at shoulder length so that my collar or clothing wouldn't cause it to break.
sometimes I wear it down...but I tend to feel more protected with it up.
Lately though, my hair seem to be rubbing up against itself (I call "eating itlself") causing damage. maybe it's just not moisturized enough?
LadyOttoline March 1st, 2006, 02:36 PM I voted "the moment I could" but really I've always worn myhair up a lot, my mom used to braid it when I was a kid (and I've pretty much always had fairly long hair), and I learned how to braid it myself as a teenager. There was a time though when I did wear it down mostly even though I *could* wear it up.
embee March 1st, 2006, 03:57 PM As soon as I could! My hair does not do well down and loose. It tangles badly, it goes stringy, and it needs to be washed *and curled* every day to look "pretty". What a nuisance... may as well have short hair and style it all the time. :(
Also, as I got older, I found the little wispies that touch the skin of my face make me crazy - they itch so I scratch and rub my face. Not nice.
Updo was *the* answer, and I love it. :)
cornflower March 1st, 2006, 04:22 PM i wear it up all the time (almost)
Willowspirit March 1st, 2006, 04:48 PM I voted BSL as this was when it really began to bother me when it was down and getting in the way. My updo styles are still pretty basic at the moment though - simple buns with hairforks and ponytails (and half ponytails for variation). I'm hoping to expand my repertoire as my technique improves.
younghippie March 1st, 2006, 06:38 PM I started wearing my hair up all the time once it hit tailbone. That is when my life started getting busy and I didn't want to mess with my hair. I found I can leave it up for days on end and not have to deal with it. I have enough on my plate already. My hair is between tailbone and classic now and no one ever sees it down including me. At least until I get a microtrim.
Eilis March 2nd, 2006, 01:39 AM I actually have to phases where I did/do wear my hair up mostly. First when I started groing them out. The moment they were long enough to put them up in some way I did so to cover up the outgrowing mess on my head. During that time I even used a fake braid for my updos.
Then there was a phase where I wore my hair mostly down. That was when they reached the shoulders and now, at about mid-back, I start do wear them up most of the time because I always get caught in my coat or my shawl or my shoulderbag straps and sometimes even in doorhandles or car doors (which both hurts, when you don't notice and want to walk away).
Veronique March 2nd, 2006, 02:42 AM As soon as I could gather it all and pull it back I started wearing it up. But I never really tried to make it look pretty or anything.
Now that I am getting close to waist, I am going to make a conscious effort to wear it up most of the time because it's amazing how much of it gets damaged when it's down. I'm going to get some hairtoys and practice those buns!
elv March 2nd, 2006, 04:07 AM Bra length... when I discovered LHC, and learned that I could prevent damage this way. It took a while to get used to it, but now it is pretty comfortable.
kimberlily March 2nd, 2006, 08:32 AM I'm at BSL now, and I usually wear it up. Mind you, that's more because if I didn't, my son would rip it all out or eat it
RainyDZ October 4th, 2006, 10:40 PM When I got to waist I started to put hair up. Because it's too freaky to general public.
sexyjacksparrow October 4th, 2006, 11:02 PM I voted shoulder. I only recently started wearing my hair mostly up. I love the way my curls look down at this length but I get so many tangles at the end of the day. My ends have been softer since I started wearing it up and way way less tangles. I do miss my curls though!
kelly-j November 11th, 2006, 06:05 AM The moment I could. Right now I can put back all my hair in a pony tail, even my bangs have grown so much its not falling in my eyes all the time.
dearladydisdain November 11th, 2006, 06:07 AM I wore my hair up occasionally when it was tailbone, but I didn't start wearing it up more often than not until classic.
Fireweed November 11th, 2006, 06:55 AM I started to bun it up at waist, before that it would be in a braid down my back. I am back to keeping it in a braid because I had it cut back to 28 inch.
Emichiee November 11th, 2006, 06:57 AM I started at Tailbone because my hair started getting stuck in my pants and belts too often.
Also I want to grow it longer and my ends taper a bit since I stopped trimming so I think its a good idea to protect them.
Before that I wore it down ALL the time.
JillieRose November 11th, 2006, 07:32 AM I chose shoulder. I wore my hair down lots before, but now it's just too much bother, and it gets everywhere. I mean everywhere. Plus I work in the lab a lot and don't want my hair full of gunk or stuck in a bandsaw. Owch.
Narcissus November 11th, 2006, 08:14 AM I voted "the moment I could", which was about shoulder or so. As soon as it got to that length it got in my eyes, so in a pony it went.
forty-two November 11th, 2006, 08:16 AM I answered classic (eh, decent bit past tb, at least), but "moment I could" is also accurate - I didn't figure out how to put my hair up till it was about that length.
Ashley November 11th, 2006, 11:11 AM Hmmm.. I've just started wearing my hair up, actually. :) I'm not at a real BSL yet, though I'm getting close. I used to wear it down because I couldn't do many interesting styles. I wish I would be more creative though, now that it's longer than before I still don't know how to do a lot of things. Just now, I don't want to expose my hair to rain, cold etc. so I'm bunning it up.
lilmisspicky126 November 11th, 2006, 04:37 PM I voted for as soon as I could. I wear my hair in a bun 90% of the time, simply because I just do, and as soon as it gets long enough to do proper, non-dinky braids, braids will be something I will do again.
Gladtobemom November 11th, 2006, 05:43 PM At shoulder length I discovered the French Twist and the Pleat.
Wonderful.
DotDotDot February 6th, 2007, 12:50 PM I've decided to start today. I've been a member of LHC for a while, but I never posted anything, just browsed, and then I stopped coming on altogether. I was browsing today for the first time in a few months because I'm having this problem with the sides of my hair breaking off at the end because of damage. This doesn't happen to the middle, so I end up with this weird look that I find positively hideous. I really want to grow my hair out really long, but I can't because I've been having to trim it constantly because of this (and because of all my splits, oh my gosh I have sooo many!). I hope I'll be able to pull through with it... I wear my hair down a lot more often than I wear it up.
golden_gal February 7th, 2007, 04:11 PM Near BSL, which is when I discovered LHC!! Before that, I did ponytails everyday.
winter February 7th, 2007, 11:36 PM I didnt learn how to until I was about hip-length, so thats what I voted. Now it's up most of the time :)
shrimp February 9th, 2007, 12:38 PM I voted mid-back. I've always gone through phases of wearing it up all the time or down all the time, but mid back was the time when I started wearing it up almost all the time.
A&F February 9th, 2007, 01:48 PM My hair has past BSL when I was looking for a way to keep it out of my way. I have had long hair off and on for the majority of my life, but my mother never taught me how to do anything with it. I was looking online for updos and came across LHC where I have learned how to do a bun and all sorts of other things. I don't think I've worn it down since.
_jen_ February 13th, 2007, 06:27 PM I wore my hair up as soon as I could. Being able to do a decent french twist was actually one of my main motivations for growing my hair out.
sixclaws February 13th, 2007, 08:14 PM My hair's always up/back in some way, shape or form, I just can't stand having it in my face. It really sucked when I was growing it out from a pixie, pretty much had to rely on headbands at one point.
mira-chan February 15th, 2007, 05:13 AM At about hip - tailbone length. Thats when I learned to bun it. Before that s was in a ponytail or sometimes a braid. When I was younger it was in a braid all the time.
lillielil February 16th, 2007, 08:00 AM as soon as I could! Even when I had super-short hair, I would pull the front back in two stubby pigtails. I can't stand to have it moving around, getting in my face, and generally making a nuisance of itself. I love that as it gets longer, I can put it up more ways. Lately I've been doing an english braid a lot, but pinning that up whenever I go outside (because nothing is more annoying than a braid getting trapped in the collar of your jacket).
Remke February 22nd, 2007, 10:00 PM I had waist length hair when I discoverd the long hair forums and then I finally learned how to wear my hair up. Now I only use forks, hairsticks and Ficcares for my daily updo´s, alsmost never hairbands witch I used to love in my npnytail.
boukje February 24th, 2007, 01:14 PM I started wearing my hair up all the time a few inches from waist length but now I am wishing I did it from around bsl, because I have a few inches of mechanical damage, but before this time I didn't know this lovely site.
thank you so much fellow LHC-ers , you're the best :D
greets from Helen.
meepster February 24th, 2007, 01:20 PM Ummm... now? It's about chin-length in front - just barely long enough to get it all in a ponytail. I've learned how to do a twist-like thing with a hairclaw, and I wear it like that every chance I get. Not sure it'll do a lot to prevent damage - my hair has the texture and consistency of steel wire and seems to be impervious to just about everything - but at least, it keeps this mop out of my face. Also, it makes me feel very feminine, somehow.
cortese February 24th, 2007, 02:34 PM Started wearing up all the time in late spring 2004, I think. I came here, whined a bit that my hair was at terminal because it wouldn't grow past my waist, and was told that the ends were likely way too thick to be terminal and that more people wore updos, whereas I was wearing it down every single day with almost no special handling care (brushing, washing more frequently, leaving it down).
So I started wearing it up every single day for a year and saw a major condition change, plus it actually passed my waist for the first time in my life. Now, it's up every day.
.Amanaka. February 24th, 2007, 06:10 PM It wasn't actually that long ago - maybe November? I was just barely at the top of BSL (almost, anyway) and I figured out how to do a stick bun. Then that turned into another type of bun (held with claw clips), and now if it's in my way, up it goes.
It's actually growing now. Is awesome.
Pani_Mniszek February 27th, 2007, 03:52 PM The very moment I could, because I have always loved the style of updos for me, even when they are out of style in the wider world.
I've been through several cycles of cutting my hair off and giving away my hairtoys because I'm going to be "modern," and somehow...I always seem to find my hair long again....
